In the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a young lion pauses in the golden light of dusk, its gaze sharp and contemplative. The soft glow of the setting sun dances across its tawny coat, highlighting the delicate textures of fur and the intensity in its amber eyes. Every detail of this close-up reveals the quiet strength and acute awareness that define Africa’s apex predators.

This photograph captures more than a portrait — it embodies a moment of stillness in the wild, where the boundary between observer and observed momentarily dissolves. The lion’s focused expression suggests it's scanning its surroundings, possibly tracking movement in the grass or listening for the distant calls of its pride. Watching this sloth climb a tree some 20 feet away was an amazing experience with the CECCOT group. We all would’ve missed it if it wasn’t for one of the students who pointed it out as we walked by. If you’d like to work closely with the wide array of bird species in the tambopata region of Peru I’d highly recommend joining the group in 2020 this summer!

Really glad that these little beauties have hatched in the same place as last year. Looking forward to seeing them grow and develop.

Es un ave grande, mide entre 90 y 100 cm de altura, con una envergadura de alas de hasta 1,95 m. y un peso de 1 a 2 kg.

Su plumaje es mayormente gris arriba y algo blanco debajo. Los adultos en la época de apareamiento tienen la cabeza blanca con un copete negro superciliar y una cresta delgada. Tiene un pico fuerte rosa-amarillento, brillante cuando adultos. Tiene un vuelo pausado, con su largo cuello retraído (forma de S) y las alas arqueadas.

Su alimentación se basa en Peces, reptiles, anfibios, pequeños roedores, insectos e incluso depreda huevos y pollos en nidos de otras aves

A beautiful morning of light on a hike just over a year ago, the light spilling onto Broadlee-Bank Tor in this photograph. A mere three weeks earlier this whole landscape was covered in snow, brought in on Storm Arwen, almost another world!

Took a lot of effort to pull this shot. I wanted to land this birdie on a small stone with a flower instead of the large boulders that it usually perches upon. Took me around 5 days of daily driving around 80KMs everyday to this place in Himachal Pradesh and waiting every morning for a couple of hours. All worth the effort in the end.
