Really glad that these little beauties have hatched in the same place as last year. Looking forward to seeing them grow and develop.

Widespread resident in Ireland.

Identification

A bird of prey (raptor) with a short hooked bill. A species of falcon with a heavy powerfully built body, medium length tail and wings which are broad close to the body and pointed at the tip. Sexual size difference, the female is larger than the male. Male and female plumages are the same, unlike Merlins, the species most likely to be confused with Peregrine Falcon. Adults are bluey grey above, with a barred tail; the underparts are white and finely barred, the check, throat and upper breast are plain white and contrast with a black hood and thick moustachal stripe. Juvenile birds are similar to adults but have brownish upperparts and streaked, not barred, feathers on the body.

Voice

Mainly silent away from its breeding site. Main call is a hard persistent cackling.

Diet

Mainly birds, usually taken in the air and sometimes on the ground or on water. Employs spectacular hunting technique where the bird 'stoops' from high above its intended prey, with its wings held close into the body, reaching great speeds. Estimates of speeds vary, but it seems likely that birds reach speeds in excess of 300km/hour, making it the fastest animal on the planet. Kills its prey with force of its impact using its legs at the last moment to inflict the killer blow. Prey includes pigeons, including feral birds, thrushes, waders and wildfowl, gulls and seabirds.

Breeding

Breeds on coastal and inland cliffs. Most birds on the coast breed on the south, west and north coasts, coastal breeding on the east coast is limited by the availability of suitable nesting cliffs. Most inland birds breed on mountain cliffs but will also breed at lower levels. The species is still recovering from a dramatic and well documented decline in the 1950s and 60s due to the effects of pesticide poisoning. The responsible pesticides have been banned and the species has been recovering slowly.

Wintering

Resident in Ireland, but shows some movement away from its breeding areas in the winter. Can be found on the coast, especially on estuaries where they hunt on concentrations of water birds. Some birds move into cites, where feral pigeons provide suitable prey; individuals have been captured on film by a road traffic camera looking down over the quays in central Dublin. Some birds at this time of the year could have immigrated from Britain or even further afield.

A beautiful morning of light on a hike just over a year ago, the light spilling onto Broadlee-Bank Tor in this photograph. A mere three weeks earlier this whole landscape was covered in snow, brought in on Storm Arwen, almost another world!

Reporting in from Hawaii just after our photo tour here. The ʻapapane (Himatione sanguinea) is a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper that is endemic to Hawaii. We see it here feeding on blossoms of a plumb tree.

Archaic (II) is another image from Sunday’s woodland wander in the Peak District. I spotted this scene after I had packed my camera away and was on my way back to the car, interestingly I grabbed my phone for an Instagram stories image but was inspired by the incredible light and mist still lingering - it was time to set up the camera, again and I’m so glad I did.

Es un ave grande, mide entre 90 y 100 cm de altura, con una envergadura de alas de hasta 1,95 m. y un peso de 1 a 2 kg.

Su plumaje es mayormente gris arriba y algo blanco debajo. Los adultos en la época de apareamiento tienen la cabeza blanca con un copete negro superciliar y una cresta delgada. Tiene un pico fuerte rosa-amarillento, brillante cuando adultos. Tiene un vuelo pausado, con su largo cuello retraído (forma de S) y las alas arqueadas.

Su alimentación se basa en Peces, reptiles, anfibios, pequeños roedores, insectos e incluso depreda huevos y pollos en nidos de otras aves

The Ural owl (Strix uralensis) is a fairly large nocturnal owl. It is a member of the true owl family, Strigidae. Both its common name and scientific name refer to the Ural Mountains of Russia where the type specimen was collected. However, this species has an extremely broad distribution that extends as far west as much of Scandinavia, montane eastern Europe, and, sporadically, central Europe across the Palearctic broadly through Russia to as far east as Sakhalin and throughout Japan. The Ural owl may include up to 15 subspecies, but most likely the number may be slightly fewer if accounting for clinal variations.

This forest owl is typical associated with the vast taiga forest in Eurosiberia, although it ranges to other forest types, including mixed forests and temperate deciduous forest. Ural owls tend to vigorously protect a set territory on which they have historically nested on a variety of natural nest sites, including tree cavities and stumps and nests originally built by other birds but now, in many parts of the range are adapted to nest boxes made by biologists and conservationists.

S. u. hondoensis (Clark 1907)- This race may include S. u. japonica. If it includes japonica, this race is found throughout Hokkaido down through northern and central Honshu. Quite to the contrary of Bergmann's rule, northern owls in Hokkaido are the smallest ones, and indeed the smallest known in the entire Ural owl species, while southerly owls are slightly larger. Otherwise birds from the different islands are similar in appearance.

Towards the end of last year I scrambled Grindsbrook Clough, but took the eastern fork up (those who’ve scrambled the route will know where I mean). I found the flow towards the top too heavy to keep following the brook all the way up, so I took a near vertical climb out of a little side gulley.

Once I reached the top of the climb I emerged next to this scene, featuring some beautifully wind-sculpted gritstone formations and a great view of Grindslow Knoll. I took a shot just to remember the spot, the light being rather flat and the colours all blending into a non-descript grey/brown colour. Snow seems to be the answer to all my photography ills recently, this time around it’s helped to provide contrast in an otherwise flat scene. The foreground has popped out from the background and there’s now the three-dimensional depth that I always look for in my photography.

I don’t know if these formation has any kind of nickname ascribed to it (like the Kit Kat Stones of Higger Tor) but the two pillars in the left of frame look like two people stood watch over the across the clough below, so my own nickname for these will be the Vigil Stones.

Really enjoyed shooting in the dark, the late night fog on Saturday night really helped me deliver a spooky image! 💀
