A powerful and resilient white rhino pauses for a moment at a watering hole in the heart of Namibia’s untamed wilderness. Its weathered skin, curved horn, and steady gaze speak to the endurance and strength of one of Africa’s most iconic species. A poignant reminder of the beauty and fragility of wildlife in its natural habitat.

Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis) head is black, upper mantle and underside are black glossed with purple. The back and wings are chestnut brown. There are no pale shaft streaks on the coverts. The eyes are ruby red. Juveniles are duller black with spots on the crown and there are whitish bars on the underside and tail. The sexes are similar in plumage but females are slightly larger.

Desert-adapted elephants of northwest Namibia are among the most extraordinary wildlife populations in Africa. Living in arid landscapes, they travel long distances along ephemeral rivers like the Huab River. This moment captures a rare close interaction between two individuals — a display of communication, strength, and social bonding in a challenging environment.

I was returning home after filming on the rim of Mount Bromo, Java. I had been amongst thousands of Javanese people as they threw offerings to the volcano god in thanks for the fertility of their land. Now, as I looked down at the endless patchwork of rice fields, I had a renewed respect for the deep connection that the Javanese farmers have with these volatile expressions of the deep earth. The soil here is so rich that it is capable of producing three harvests of rice a year, more than enough to feed the 145 million people that call this home. #BBCEarth #EarthCapture #EarthOnLocation #Planescape #Java #Indonesia #Rice #Farming #Aerial #Volcano

The sky bears witness to an exquisite display of nature's beauty. This scene of countless green parrots flying in a massive flock creates a living canvas. This inherent instinct to move together is a vital way for birds to survive and stay protected. As they soar with open wings, the rhythmic movement of their flight highlights a wonderful order within nature. Far away from city clamor and concrete cages, this open-sky view reminds us how crucial it is to protect wildlife and maintain ecological balance. The lively chatter of these free wings sings a continuous song of nature's beauty across the earth.

One of the most photographed waterfalls along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina is Crabtree Falls. A moderate 2 mile roundtrip hike on a well established trail. This waterfall receives many visitors with the autumn the most popular time of year to see the fall foliage at the waterfall.

There are several species of Owl butterflies belonging to the genus Caligo. With wingspans up to 15cm, they are some of the largest species of butterflies to be seen in the forests of the tropical Americas. Species are known for the cryptic markings and large conspicuous eye spots on the underside of their closed wings, which resemble the eyes of an owl. The species name Caligo (which translates to “darkness”) refers to these butterflies preference for activity during the hours of dawn and dusk as they fly through the forest in search of ripe fruit to feed on. It is only then that the flash of blue or purple colours on the upper side of the wings becomes visible, seen here on this Teucer Giant-Owl Butterfly photographed on the island of Trinidad.

Amandava amandava

The red avadavat (Amandava amandava), red munia or strawberry finch, is a sparrow-sized bird of the family Estrildidae. It is found in the open fields and grasslands of tropical Asia and is popular as a cage bird due to the colourful plumage of the males in their breeding season. It breeds in the Indian Subcontinent in the monsoon season. The species name of amandava and the common name of avadavat are derived from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, from where these birds were exported into the pet trade in former times. This small finch is easily identified by the rounded black tail and the bill that is seasonally red. The rump is red and the breeding male is red on most of the upper parts except for a black eye-stripe, lower belly and wings. There are white spots on the red body and wing feathers. The non-breeding male is duller but has the red-rump while the female is duller with less of the white spotting on the feathers.

Missing the night's staring toward the Milky Way core. I love how the galaxy lined up perfectly with this road, like you could drive into the heart of our galaxy - a mere 26,000~ light years away.

Dreaming of those warm nights, watching the galactic core dance across the sky. As always, thank you for checking it out.

The dancing tanchōzuru: the jump for joy series

With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.

Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.

Stripe-breasted Woodpecker

The stripe-breasted woodpecker (Dendrocopos atratus) is a species of bird in the woodpecker family, Picidae. It is found in Southeast Asia within subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.

Adult length is between 21 and 22 cm (8.3 and 8.7 in). The upper parts are black heavily barred with white, with the mantle being unbarred. The upper tail is black with some white markings on the outer feathers. The crown and nape are red in the male and black in the female. The face is whitish with a black moustache which unites with a stripe on the edge of the breast. The throat, breast and belly are greyish-yellow or greyish-buff, boldly streaked with black. The under tail coverts are red. The iris is chestnut and the beak is grey, long and sharply pointed. The legs and feet are bluish-grey. The juvenile has greyer underparts, the under-tail coverts are pink or orange, and the crown is a duller red in young males.

The stripe-breasted woodpecker is native to southeastern Asia. Its range extends from northeastern India to Vietnam and the province of Yunnan in southwestern China. It is a fairly uncommon species, but the population appears to be stable, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed its conservation status as being of "least concern".

The stripe-breasted woodpecker is mainly found in montane evergreen forest, particularly pine and oak forest, but also the edges of deciduous forests, as well as more open areas with scattered trees. Its altitudinal range is from about 800 to 2,800 m (2,600 to 9,200 ft) but it mostly occurs above 2,000 m (6,600 ft).

The stripe-breasted woodpecker feeds in the mid to upper parts of the canopy on insects, particularly ants and beetle larvae, often foraging in pairs or small family groups. Breeding takes place from February onwards in many parts of the range, but from March to May in India and from April to May in Myanmar.

The **Cabañeros National Park**, located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo, is one of the most valuable protected areas on the Iberian Peninsula. It is often called the "Spanish Serengeti" due to its vast stretches of open plains ("rañas") combined with the Mediterranean forest of the Montes de Toledo.

### Main Features

* **Landscape and Ecosystems:** The park is mainly divided into two areas: the **raña**, a large treeless plain that offers spectacular scenery—especially at sunset—and the **mountain ranges (sierras)**, which are covered in dense Mediterranean forest and scrubland.

* **Wildlife:** A true ecological paradise. It is famous for its large population of **red deer** (whose mating season, the *berrea* or deer rut, attracts thousands of visitors in autumn), as well as roe deer and wild boars.

* **Birdwatching Paradise:** This is a vital area for the conservation of large birds. It is an excellent spot to observe the **cinereous vulture (black vulture)**, the **Iberian imperial eagle**, the **black-winged kite**, the **black stork**, and various raptors such as the red kite or the Montagu's harrier.

### Activities

1. **Hiking Trails:** There are numerous free, self-guided trails (such as the Boquerón del Estena route, the Rocigalgo Massif, or the Plaza de los Moros) that allow you to explore the forests and riverbanks.

2. **4x4 Guided Tours:** To visit the restricted interior area of the *raña*, guided tours in all-terrain vehicles are available. This is the best option for up-close wildlife viewing and panoramic vistas of the vast plains.

3. **Visitor Centers:** The park features several interpretation centers (such as the one in Horcajo de los Montes or "Casa de Palillos" in Alcoba de los Montes), which are perfect for learning about the local geology, flora, and fauna before hitting the trails.

The bold, distinctive patterns cut into the heather on Nether Moor had grabbed my attention as soon as I spotted them and I was resolved to incorporate them in a picture. I spent a long and frustrating time trying to pair them up with Hope Brink and Win Hill in the distance, but every effort I attempted just didn’t work.

I decided a third element in the frame is what I needed, changing my mindset to look for what I would if I was using a wide-angle. The hunt for an interesting foreground ensued, a section of dry stone walling held promise, but proved to be more of a barrier in the frame, jarring the visual flow. I all but gave up when I spotted a beautiful tuft of heather with it’s own little forest of sprouts poking through a covering of snow.

Although I was only looking for three elements in this photo (it’s the magic number right?) I ended up with four distinct bands of texture (the one I can count to as a drummer) which to me give a compact snap shot showing the patterns and shape to be found on the moors, from the smaller details to the features grander in scale.

Sleek, fast-flying large falcon. Always look for a grayish back in adults, long wings that almost reach the tail tip, and powerful but slender build. Dark mark below each eye varies in shape and size. Juveniles are more heavily patterned below than adults, and can be quite brownish above. Patterning varies considerably across a wide global range, with back color ranging from pale gray in Central Asian “Red-capped” to slaty-blue across much of northern Eurasia North America, to almost black in Asian “Shaheen.” Chases prey down at high speeds with continuous powerful wingbeats. Becoming increasingly common in parts of range, especially in cities, where they can nest on tall buildings and feed on pigeons. Adaptable, and can be seen in a wide range of habitats; often encountered in areas with steep cliffs, as well as around coastal mudflats and open areas with shorebirds.

BASIC DESCRIPTION

Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. You’re most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. With their smaller lookalike, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawks make for famously tricky identifications. Both species are sometimes unwanted guests at bird feeders, looking for an easy meal (but not one of sunflower seeds). (www.allaboutbirds.org)

Binomial name

Terpsiphone paradisi

Asian paradise flycatchers are most frequently found in deciduous, evergreen, and bamboo forests with thick shrubbery on the ground. They typically live in areas with an average annual rainfall between 600 mm and 2,000 mm, consistent with temperate forest and tropical rainforest biomes.Asian paradise flycatchers have differing appearances based on their sex and level of maturity. Males reach sizes slightly larger than females. They have ten primary feathers and twelve tail feathers. Their legs are feeble and therefore they are almost exclusively arboreal. This species tends to be smaller than other closely-related flycatchers and males are distinguishable by their long tail feathers. Not all males develop these long central tail feathers. The eye rings of males are bold and blue. Males can occur in two morphs: rufous (reddish-brown) and white. The heads of males are glossy and either dark green, dark blue, or black. Their undersides are white, and their beaks and legs are light blue. As juveniles, all males are rufous and are similar in appearance to females, but can develop into a white morph after their second year. Many males remain a rufous morph for their entire lives. The rufous morph is more common than the white morph. The white morph is more common in the southern areas of their range than in the north.

Male and female Asian paradise flycatchers display a high level of parental investment. Both parents participate in the incubation, protection and provisioning of chicks. Parental involvement lasts between 26 and 34 days total (not including time spent nest-building).

Binomial name

Glareola lactea

This bird has short legs, long pointed wings and a short tail. Its short bill is an adaptation to aerial feeding. On the ground, it looks mainly pale grey (hence lactea, milky). The crown of the head is brown.

The wings are grey above with black primaries and black and white bars at the rear edge of the inner flight feathers. The underwings are mainly black. The tail is white with a black terminal triangle. The belly is white.
