Oriental White Eye ( Zosterops palpebrosus) are small about 8–9 cm long with yellowish olive upper parts, a white eye ring, yellow throat and vent. The belly is whitish grey but may have yellow in some subspecies. The sexes look similar. About eleven subspecies are well recognised. They forage in small groups, feeding on nectar and small insects. They are easily identified by the distinctive white eye-ring and overall yellowish upperparts.

White-Spotted Fantail (Rhipidura albogularis) adults is about 19 cm long. It has a dark fan-shaped tail, edged in white, and white supercilium and throat. Birds are mainly slate grey above, with a black eye mask, and a white throat and eyebrow. It has whitish underparts, and a grey breast band that is spotted white. It is insectivorous, and often fans its tail as it moves through the undergrowth. It uses the same song year after year, with progressively small changes, with the result that the song sounds very different after 4–5 years. The male's call is a valuable tool in detection and identification of the bird.

Purple-rumped sunbirds (Leptocoma zeylonica) are tiny at less than 10 cm long. They have medium-length thin down-curved bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues, both adaptations for nectar feeding. They are sexually dimorphic. The males have a dark maroon upperside with a blue-green crown that glistens at some angles, bright green shoulder patch and violet/purple rump patch which is generally hidden under the wings. The underparts are whitish with dark throat, maroon breast band and purple/violet patch in the throat which is visible in some angles. The iris is generally reddish in color. In the Western Ghats, it can overlap in some areas with the crimson-backed sunbird but the male of that species has reddish upperparts, a broader breast band and generally darker eyes. The female has a white throat followed by yellowish breast. The upperside is olive or brownish. The uppertail coverts are black and a weak supercilium may be visible.Their call is ptsiee ptsit, ptsiee ptsswit or a sharp twittering tityou, titou, trrrtit, tityou...

A Leopard climbing up a tree in Masai mara is a mesmerising and dramatic sight!

Malabar-pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus)

On my second visit to Cornelian Bay I was greeted by a spectacular sight. The Cleveland Way winds through a small covering of woodland on Wheatcroft Cliff and as I emerged I could see fog over the top of cliffs and assumed that it was rolling in off the sea.

I cleared the woodland and was presented with a scene I wasn't expecting. A temperature inversion had occurred over the land and cloud was now spilling over the top of the cliffs and into the sea.

Travelling through the frame from near to far we see a WW2 pill-box (one of two), Osgodby Point, Lebberston Cliff, Gristhorpe Cliff, North Cliff and Filey Brigg at the far distance.

Tricoloured Munia (Lonchura malacca) have pale brown upperparts, lack the dark head found in adults, and have uniform buff underparts that can be confused with immatures of other munias such as the scaly-breasted munia. It is a small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on grain and other seeds. It inhabits wet grassland habitats.

Indian black-lored Tit (Machlolophus aplonotus) is arge in size at 13 cm, with a broad black line (broader in the male) down its otherwise yellow front. The large crest, neck, throat and head are black with yellow cheeks and supercilia. Upperparts are olive-green. It has two white or yellowish wingbars and white outer tail feathers.Females and young birds are duller than males. The underpart colour becomes increasingly dull from north to south through this tit's range.

Baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) is a weaverbird found across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. These are sparrow-sized (15 cm) and in their non-breeding plumage, both males and females resemble female house sparrows. They have a stout conical bill and a short square tail. Non-breeding males and females look alike, dark brown streaked fulvous buff above, plain (unstreaked) whitish fulvous below, eyebrow long and buff coloured, bill is horn coloured and no mask. Breeding males have a bright yellow crown, dark brown mask, blackish brown bill, upper parts are dark brown streaked with yellow, with a yellow breast and cream buff below.

White-browed Bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) is about 20 cm long, with a moderately long (8 centimetres or 3 inches) tail. It has olive-grey upperparts and whitish underparts. This species is identifiable by the white supercilium, white crescent below the eye, and dark eyestripe and moustachial stripe. The vent is yellowish and there is some yellow on the chin and moustache. The throat is however largely whitish unlike in the similar looking and sounding yellow-throated bulbul which is found in rockier habitats. Three or four hair-like filoplumes are present on the nape. Sexes are similar in plumage. It is usually detected by the burst of song that it produces from the top of a bush and often dives into the bush becoming difficult to see. The song is a rich, spluttering warble and the bird is more often heard than seen and is slightly darker and has a shorter wing than the nominate race.

Dendrobates auratus can be found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. They were also introduced in Hawaii by humans, and have flourished there.

A per chance shot from the stack of frames which made up my earlier star-trails shot, the northern lights made an appearance as I was shooting in the New Forest.

This is taken in Hampshire, southern U.K. - so a rare occurence for us. It's quite faint, but its there.

Indian pond heron (Ardeola grayii) appears stocky with a short neck, short thick bill and buff-brown back. In summer, adults have long neck feathers. Its appearance is transformed from their dull colours when they take to flight, when the white of the wings makes them very prominent. They are widespread and common but can be easily missed when they stalk prey at the edge of small water-bodies or even when they roost close to human habitations. They are however distinctive when they take off with bright white wings flashing in contrast to the cryptic streaked olive and brown colours of the body. Their camouflage is so excellent that they can be approached closely before they take to flight, a behaviour which has resulted in folk names and beliefs that the birds are short-sighted or blind.

Purple sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus) has a relatively short bill, a dark and short square ended tail with distinctive sexual dimorphism. Less than 10 cm long they have a down-curved bill with brush-tipped tubular tongues that aid in nectar feeding. The male is glossy metallic bluish to purplish black on the upper parts with the wings appearing dark brown. The breeding male also has underparts of the same purplish black, but non-breeding males may show a central streak of black on yellow underparts. In the breeding plumage, the male can be confused with the syntopic Loten's sunbird which has a long bill and a distinctive broad maroon band on the breast. Breeding males will sometimes show their yellow pectoral tufts in displays. There is a patch of bright blue on the shoulder of breeding males. The maroon shine on the feathers of the collar around the neck is visible mainly during the breeding seasons.

The dancing tanchōzuru:

With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.

Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.
