This photo is, in the truest sense of the word, a snapshot.
A unique sunset from the summit of Punta di Zonia – an evening I won’t forget anytime soon.
It was just a brief moment, maybe half a minute …
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a red glow slowly moving up the mountain until the 2,518-meter-high Croda Negra finally lit up in deep red.
I pressed the shutter immediately – luckily, I already had my telephoto lens on, or I might have missed this moment.
It was one of many unforgettable moments we experienced that evening.
This day was the absolute highlight of our Dolomites tour 2024.
I was able to take home some incredible footage.
✨Thank you for taking a look. Have a great day and always good light! ✨
I'm just a big eye fly...

Swan Lake
Like much of Japan, Hokkaido is seismically active. Consequently, hot springs and volcanic vents can be found all across the island. Lake Kussharo, an inland lake in the western region of Hokkaido, is a caldera lake, a remnant of a long-ago erupted volcano. It is the largest of three caldera lakes that make up Akan National Park. And as with most geographic names in Hokkaido, the lake derives its name from the Ainu and the Ainu word “Kuccharo,” means “The place where a lake becomes a river.”
Its violent, seismic past is evident even today, with natural hot springs bubbling up along its shoreline, heating both the water and gravelly shores. It is here where the Whooper Swans gather to find refuge from Hokkaido’s brutally cold winters.

Black-naped monarch (Hypothymis azurea) is about 16 cm long, and is mainly pale azure blue apart from a whitish lower belly. It has a black nape and a narrow black gorget. The female is duller and lacks the black markings. Its wings and back are grey-brown.They are sexually dimorphic, with the male having a distinctive black patch on the back of the head and a narrow black half collar ("necklace"). They have a call that is similar to that of the Asian paradise flycatcher.

Pied Bushchat (Saxicola caprata) male is black except for a white rump, wing patch and lower belly. The iris is dark brown, the bill and legs black. The female is drab brown and slightly streaked. Juveniles have a scaly appearance on the underside but dark above like the females.
Isabelline shrike (Lanius isabellinus) plumage is isabelline, the sandy colour which gives rise to its name. It has a red tail. Young birds can be distinguished from young red-backed shrikes by the much sparser vermiculations on the underparts. This migratory medium-sized passerine eats large insects, small birds, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a larder. It breeds in open cultivated country, preferably with thorn bushes.

A breathtaking view of Tenerife’s volcanic coastline, where resilient green vegetation flourishes against the harsh lava rock. The deep blue Atlantic stretches into the horizon, framed by rugged mountains and dramatic cloud formations, showcasing the island’s raw, untamed beauty.
Tricoloured Munia (Lonchura malacca) have pale brown upperparts, lack the dark head found in adults, and have uniform buff underparts that can be confused with immatures of other munias such as the scaly-breasted munia. It is a small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on grain and other seeds. It inhabits wet grassland habitats.
White-browed Bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) is about 20 cm long, with a moderately long (8 centimetres or 3 inches) tail. It has olive-grey upperparts and whitish underparts. This species is identifiable by the white supercilium, white crescent below the eye, and dark eyestripe and moustachial stripe. The vent is yellowish and there is some yellow on the chin and moustache. The throat is however largely whitish unlike in the similar looking and sounding yellow-throated bulbul which is found in rockier habitats. Three or four hair-like filoplumes are present on the nape. Sexes are similar in plumage. It is usually detected by the burst of song that it produces from the top of a bush and often dives into the bush becoming difficult to see. The song is a rich, spluttering warble and the bird is more often heard than seen and is slightly darker and has a shorter wing than the nominate race.
Southern grey Shrike has a long tail, and powerful, curved beak. It has an enormous head with a wide black eye patch that attracts the attention. Its back and head are grey. Wings are black with a distinctive white patch. The tail is also black, although the outer feathers are white. Chest and underparts are pinkish grey. Sexes are practically the same, and once their down is lost, the young are similar to adults. Its average length is 24-25 cm with a wingspan of 28-34 cm.
Dendrobates auratus can be found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. They were also introduced in Hawaii by humans, and have flourished there.
Long-tailed shrike (Lanius schach) is a typical shrike, favouring dry open habitats and found perched prominently atop a bush or on a wire. The dark mask through the eye is broad and covers the forehead in most subspecies and the whole head is black in subspecies tricolor and nasutus. The tail is narrow and graduated with pale rufous on the outer feathers.

On my second visit to Cornelian Bay I was greeted by a spectacular sight. The Cleveland Way winds through a small covering of woodland on Wheatcroft Cliff and as I emerged I could see fog over the top of cliffs and assumed that it was rolling in off the sea.
I cleared the woodland and was presented with a scene I wasn't expecting. A temperature inversion had occurred over the land and cloud was now spilling over the top of the cliffs and into the sea.
Travelling through the frame from near to far we see a WW2 pill-box (one of two), Osgodby Point, Lebberston Cliff, Gristhorpe Cliff, North Cliff and Filey Brigg at the far distance.

Demoiselle crane (Grus virgo) is 85–100 cm long, 76 cm tall and has a 155–180 cm wingspan. It weighs 2–3 kg. It is the smallest species of crane. The demoiselle crane is slightly smaller than the common crane but has similar plumage. It has a long white neck stripe and the black on the foreneck extends down over the chest in a plume. It has a loud trumpeting call, higher-pitched than the common crane. Like other cranes it has a dancing display, more balletic than the common crane, with less leaping.

This is taken in Hampshire, southern U.K. - so a rare occurence for us. It's quite faint, but its there.

Binomial name
Glareola lactea
This bird has short legs, long pointed wings and a short tail. Its short bill is an adaptation to aerial feeding. On the ground, it looks mainly pale grey (hence lactea, milky). The crown of the head is brown.
The wings are grey above with black primaries and black and white bars at the rear edge of the inner flight feathers. The underwings are mainly black. The tail is white with a black terminal triangle. The belly is white.
Purple-rumped sunbirds (Leptocoma zeylonica) are tiny at less than 10 cm long. They have medium-length thin down-curved bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues, both adaptations for nectar feeding. They are sexually dimorphic. The males have a dark maroon upperside with a blue-green crown that glistens at some angles, bright green shoulder patch and violet/purple rump patch which is generally hidden under the wings. The underparts are whitish with dark throat, maroon breast band and purple/violet patch in the throat which is visible in some angles. The iris is generally reddish in color. In the Western Ghats, it can overlap in some areas with the crimson-backed sunbird but the male of that species has reddish upperparts, a broader breast band and generally darker eyes. The female has a white throat followed by yellowish breast. The upperside is olive or brownish. The uppertail coverts are black and a weak supercilium may be visible.Their call is ptsiee ptsit, ptsiee ptsswit or a sharp twittering tityou, titou, trrrtit, tityou...

Indian black-lored Tit (Machlolophus aplonotus) is arge in size at 13 cm, with a broad black line (broader in the male) down its otherwise yellow front. The large crest, neck, throat and head are black with yellow cheeks and supercilia. Upperparts are olive-green. It has two white or yellowish wingbars and white outer tail feathers.Females and young birds are duller than males. The underpart colour becomes increasingly dull from north to south through this tit's range.
Black drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) is glossy black with a wide fork to the tail. Adults usually have a small white spot at the base of the gape. The iris is dark brown. The sexes cannot be told apart in the field. Juveniles are brownish and may have some white barring or speckling towards the belly and vent, and can be mistaken for the white-bellied drongo. First-year birds have white tips to the feathers of the belly, while second-years have these white-tipped feathers restricted to the vent. They are aggressive and fearless birds, and although only 28 cm in length, they will attack much larger species that enter their nesting territory, including crows and birds of prey. They fly with strong flaps of the wing and are capable of fast manoeuvres that enable them to capture flying insects. With short legs, they sit upright on thorny bushes, bare perches or electricity wires. They may also perch on grazing animals. They are capable of producing a wide range of calls but a common call is a two note tee-hee call resembling that of the Shikra.
The dancing tanchōzuru:
With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.
Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.
