Southern grey Shrike has a long tail, and powerful, curved beak. It has an enormous head with a wide black eye patch that attracts the attention. Its back and head are grey. Wings are black with a distinctive white patch. The tail is also black, although the outer feathers are white. Chest and underparts are pinkish grey. Sexes are practically the same, and once their down is lost, the young are similar to adults. Its average length is 24-25 cm with a wingspan of 28-34 cm.

While I was photographing an Indian Cormorant, This beautiful fellow landed too close to me & opened up its wings to soak up some morning Sun.

Shrikes generally use their hooked beak to crack prey's skull, and impale the victim on sharp objects, like thorns or barbed wire.

Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica)

is 13–14 cm with plain brown above except for the distinctive black tail with red side patches. It has a strong white supercilium. The male has an iridescent blue bib edged below with successive black, white and rust coloured borders.

Siberian Stonechat (Saxicola maurus) is typically darker above and paler below, with a white rump and whiter underparts with less orange on the breast. The male in breeding plumage has black upperparts and head, a conspicuous white collar, scapular patch and rump, and a restricted area of orange on the throat. Female has pale brown upperparts and head, white neck patches (not a full collar), and a pale, unstreaked pinkish-yellow rump. Males in winter plumage are intermediate between summer males and females, with a supercilium resembling the whinchat from this species and the female it can be distinguished by the full white collar.

Demoiselle crane (Grus virgo) is 85–100 cm long, 76 cm tall and has a 155–180 cm wingspan. It weighs 2–3 kg. It is the smallest species of crane. The demoiselle crane is slightly smaller than the common crane but has similar plumage. It has a long white neck stripe and the black on the foreneck extends down over the chest in a plume. It has a loud trumpeting call, higher-pitched than the common crane. Like other cranes it has a dancing display, more balletic than the common crane, with less leaping.

Sattal is at 1250-1300m height ( KMVN sign board suggests 1219 m), located in Kumaun Region of Nainital district of Uttarakhand, just 80 mins drive from Kathgodam, connected via Shatabdi trains from the National capital, Delhi.

As the name suggests, it has seven lakes , namely,

1. Panna Tal or Garud Tal

2. Naldamyanti Tal

3. Hanuman Tal

4. Sita Tal

5. Ram Tal

6. Laxman Tal

7. Sukha Tal or Bharat Tal

Also this place is not just about birding, it has other activities like camping, boating, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking.

So far as birding is concerned, it has three different areas to explore - studio, hide and trail.

Through my various posts, i will try to explain all the three aspects of birding. I will post the butterflies and mosses as well which I clicked during the hike within forest.

Set amongst the dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is among the very few of the unspoiled biodiversity in northern India.

Sattal is unique for having 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.

There are some small hotels and resorts catering to tourists looking mainly for birding and enjoying the nature walk.

Long-tailed shrike (Lanius schach) is a typical shrike, favouring dry open habitats and found perched prominently atop a bush or on a wire. The dark mask through the eye is broad and covers the forehead in most subspecies and the whole head is black in subspecies tricolor and nasutus. The tail is narrow and graduated with pale rufous on the outer feathers.

A breathtaking view of Tenerife’s volcanic coastline, where resilient green vegetation flourishes against the harsh lava rock. The deep blue Atlantic stretches into the horizon, framed by rugged mountains and dramatic cloud formations, showcasing the island’s raw, untamed beauty.

Flame-throated bulbul (Pycnonotus gularis) is about 18 cm long with an olive green back and yellow underparts, a squarish black head without a crest, an orange-red throat. The iris is white and contrasts with the dark head. The legs are brown and the gape is yellowish-pink. The bill is dark brown to black. They are olive backed with yellow undersides, a triangular orange-red throat and a white iris that stands out against the contrasting black head. They are usually seen foraging in groups in the forest canopy for berries and small insects. They have a call often with two or three tinkling notes that can sound similar to those produced by the red-whiskered bulbul.

Binomial name

Glareola lactea

This bird has short legs, long pointed wings and a short tail. Its short bill is an adaptation to aerial feeding. On the ground, it looks mainly pale grey (hence lactea, milky). The crown of the head is brown.

The wings are grey above with black primaries and black and white bars at the rear edge of the inner flight feathers. The underwings are mainly black. The tail is white with a black terminal triangle. The belly is white.

Isabelline shrike (Lanius isabellinus) plumage is isabelline, the sandy colour which gives rise to its name. It has a red tail. Young birds can be distinguished from young red-backed shrikes by the much sparser vermiculations on the underparts. This migratory medium-sized passerine eats large insects, small birds, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a larder. It breeds in open cultivated country, preferably with thorn bushes.

Swan Lake

Like much of Japan, Hokkaido is seismically active. Consequently, hot springs and volcanic vents can be found all across the island. Lake Kussharo, an inland lake in the western region of Hokkaido, is a caldera lake, a remnant of a long-ago erupted volcano. It is the largest of three caldera lakes that make up Akan National Park. And as with most geographic names in Hokkaido, the lake derives its name from the Ainu and the Ainu word “Kuccharo,” means “The place where a lake becomes a river.”

Its violent, seismic past is evident even today, with natural hot springs bubbling up along its shoreline, heating both the water and gravelly shores. It is here where the Whooper Swans gather to find refuge from Hokkaido’s brutally cold winters.

The dancing tanchōzuru:

With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.

Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.

A solitary killer, the brown hare stalks its prey. The brown hare can consume eight times its body weight. The other predators have to wait for their turn.

And thus concludes my National Geographics special about brown hares 🐰. For the first time in my life I managed to sneak in this close to a brown hare. To my surprise, this lad did not really seem to carrot at all.

Kitakitsune

The ezo red fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) is a subspecies of red fox widely distributed in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands and the surrounding islands of Japan.

The Ezo red fox's formal name, Kitakitsune (北狐), was given to the subspecies by Kyukichi Kishida when he studied them in Sakhalin in 1924. In the Ainu languages it is known as cironnup, sumari, kimotpe or hurep.

The ezo red fox is somewhat larger than the Japanese red fox found in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, and the outer part of the ear and the limbs are black. There are many similarities with continental red foxes. Ezo red foxes range widely from grassland to alpine belts in Hokkaido. They mainly eat rats, mountain hares, birds and insects. They also eat fruit and nuts in autumn. In tourist spots and in some urban areas there are individuals who feed on the street. They have also been observed feeding on the placenta of cattle in pastures or at disposal facilities.

They dig holes or tunnels to make their lairs. The females give birth to kits in the early spring, which are grown and independent by late autumn. Males act independently and do not contribute to the raising of offspring.

Photographed on frozen waters off the Notsuke Peninsula.

White-bellied treepie (Dendrocitta leucogastra) has white head and body makes it easy to distinguish from the sympatric rufous treepie. This tends to be found in more dense forest and is less associated with human habitation than the rufous treepie. The white-bellied treepie is 48 cm long. The back of the neck is white, and the throat and breast are black. The thighs are black, and the undertail coverts are chestnut. The rest of the underparts is white. The back is chestnut-brown. The wings are black and have a white patch. The rump is white. Two-thirds of the two central tail feathers are silver-grey, and the terminal third is black. The other tail feathers are black. The beak is black, and the legs are greyish-black.

This photo is, in the truest sense of the word, a snapshot.

A unique sunset from the summit of Punta di Zonia – an evening I won’t forget anytime soon.

It was just a brief moment, maybe half a minute …

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a red glow slowly moving up the mountain until the 2,518-meter-high Croda Negra finally lit up in deep red.

I pressed the shutter immediately – luckily, I already had my telephoto lens on, or I might have missed this moment.

It was one of many unforgettable moments we experienced that evening.

This day was the absolute highlight of our Dolomites tour 2024.

I was able to take home some incredible footage.

✨Thank you for taking a look. Have a great day and always good light! ✨

Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) is 93–122 cm long with a 2.3–2.8 m wingspan. In the nominate race the males weigh 6.2 to 10.5 kg and females typically weigh 6.5 to 10.5 kg. It is a typical Old World vulture in appearance, with a very white head, very broad wings and short tail feathers. It has a white neck ruff and yellow bill. The buff body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers.

Wire-tailed Swallow (Hirundo smithii) is a small swallow, measuring 18 cm in length. It has bright blue upperparts, bright white underparts and a chestnut cap. Immature birds lack tail wires, and have dull brown caps. The species is named for the very long filamentous outermost tail feathers, which trail behind like two wires. The sexes are similar in appearance, but the female has shorter "wires". Juveniles have a brown crown, back and tail.

The Pink Poui (Tabebuia rosea) is a large, tropical tree found in the Americas. Also known as Apamate or Rosy Trumpet Tree in its native range, it has been introduced to various countries around the world, including Trinidad & Tobago. It is often planted in parks and gardens, due to the large and attractive inflorescences (flowers) it produces in various hues of pink or purple. The trees may flower several times during the months of February to April, which each subsequent bloom becoming increasingly profuse from the last; and signal the oncoming change from drier to wetter months.
