Embroidered Paper Pages: I used some Japanese tissue-like papers - the left one has images of roses and the right one has these neat organic circles, one of which I have cut out. I was really surprised how strong the paper was during the embroidery, including the bullion stitching on the left. I did five layers and used a cellulose paste on the edges.

I found it hard to get my head around these plasterwork ladies, apparently depictions of an Elizabethan gentleman's late wife. There were very many of these images throughout his wonderful house, can't help thinking that his second wife must have found it quite trying. The German gentleman touring the house was very unimpressed, hence the picture's title.

Finally, I'm getting around to posting some of my more memorable photographs from an amazing two-week trip to Europe this Fall. We flew from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to Barcelona, Spain where we spent two nights exploring this fascinating city before embarking on The Brilliance of the Seas on September the 24th for the next 12 nights.

We stayed at a hotel on La Ramblas which is a vibrant pedestrian-only street that has many attractions including various mimes, such as this creative fellow, along the way. These human statues would remain motionless for hours, only moving briefly to acknowledge the donation of money into their collection cans.

ENGLISH

A corona is a type of plasma "atmosphere" of the Sun or other celestial body, extending millions of kilometers into space, most easily seen during a total solar eclipse, but also observable in a coronagraph. The Latin root of the word corona means crown.

The sun's corona is much hotter (by a factor of nearly 200) than the visible surface of the Sun: the photosphere's average temperature is 5800 kelvin compared to the corona's one to three million kelvin. The corona is 10−12 times as dense as the photosphere, however, and so produces about one-millionth as much visible light. The corona is separated from the photosphere by the relatively shallow chromosphere. The exact mechanism by which the corona is heated is still the subject of some debate, but likely possibilities include induction by the Sun's magnetic field and sonic pressure waves from below (the latter being less probable now that coronae are known to be present in early-type, highly magnetic stars). The outer edges of the Sun's corona are constantly being transported away due to open magnetic flux generating the solar wind.

The Corona is not always evenly distributed across the surface of the sun. During periods of quiet, the corona is more or less confined to the equatorial regions, with coronal holes covering the polar regions. However during the Sun's active periods, the corona is evenly distributed over the equatorial and polar regions, though it is most prominent in areas with sunspot activity. The solar cycle spans approximately 11 years, from solar minimum to solar maximum, where the solar magnetic field is continually wound up (due to a differential rotation at the solar equator; the equator rotates quicker than the poles). Sunspot activity will be more pronounced at solar maximum where the magnetic field is twisted to a maximum. Associated with sunspots are coronal loops, loops of magnetic flux, upwelling from the solar interior. The magnetic flux pushes the hotter photosphere aside, exposing the cooler plasma below, thus creating the dark (when compared to the solar disk) spots.

Κατάκολο - Pyrgos (Greece).

ENGLISH

Katakolo (Greek: Κατάκολο; before the 1970s: Κατάκολον or Katakolon) is a seaside town in western Ilia in the municipality of Pyrgos. Katakolo is part of the municipality of Pyrgos (Ilia). It is located south of Patras and Dounaiika, 12 km off downtown Pyrgos, west of Olympia and northwest of Messenia. The town centre is within a gulf overlooking the Ionian Sea and dividing the Kyparissian Gulf from the rest of the Ionian.

It has a small port which is the main port of Pyrgos, a school, restaurants, a church and a town square. Most impressive is surely the visit to the Municipal Museum of Ancient Greek Technology which holds 150 operating reconstructions of mechanisms and inventions of the ancient Greeks covering the period from 2000 B.C. to 100 A.D. A railway called the Katakolo-Pyrgos line goes to Katakolo. Small hills with forests surround Katakolo. Katakolo is situated on a peninsula and has a lighthouse founded southwest. The Lighthouse Katakolo (Faros Katakolo) was first opened in 1865. The port is also a frequent stop for cruise ships on tours of the Ionian and Mediterranean seas, offering an opportunity for passengers to visit the site of Ancient Olympia. Consequently, many of the shops in the town centre are geared toward foreign tourists. The other main industries includes agriculture and services.

A Pobra do Caramiñal, A Coruña (Spain).

View On Black

ENGLISH

A Pobra do Caramiñal is located in the entrance of one of the lower bays of the Galician coastline known as the "Ria de Arousa" in the Province of A Coruña. It is the next stop out of the ria (bay or more apropos 'fjord') after Boiro and is famous for its unusual festival procession in September.

The size of A Pobra do Caramiñal’s harbor and the number and scale of fishing vessels in it. Most tourist guides to this area will illuminate you about the fishing heritage of "Ribeira", just a few kilometers away, but A Pobra do Caramiñal is only mentioned in passing. That is a serious injustice since the main commercial port of Ribeira is closed to the public, whilst its smaller equivalent is there for all to see at A Pobra.

The fishing boats on display ranged from those which were only dinghy sized (called dornas), and left on the main ramp, to industrial sized fishing boats moored up at a key that extended in to the bay. There was plenty of activity and all the evidence pointed towards A Pobra’s fishing economy being prosperous and its bay being one of deep water.

CASTELLANO
