A lovely London Underground group press advert of c1930 (reissued in folder form) showing a charming illustration by Ian Strang. The advert lists the 17 General bus routes that served Epping Forest (the Underground Group owning the General bus company), routes that were extremely popular in their day when the Forest was a real draw for Londoners. The advert looks very 'Curwen Press'.
A train of 1960 stock, having arrived from Ongar, a service often worked by this stock in the final years.
Now a preserved railway, but in June 1981 it was the most surprising part of the London Underground. This is between North Weald and Blake Hall.
Some 3 months before I started taking bus photographs seriously, I snapped RMC1495 through the car windscreen somewhere near Epping on 5/2/67.
The Green Line coach is on route 718.

Epping forest is an ancient woodland that has been permanently forested since neolithic times. Formerly dominated by limes, in the Saxon times the composition of the forest was changed through selective cutting. The forest became a Royal Forest under Henry II (1154-1189). Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are known to have hunted here. Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge can still be seen here in Chingford..

It's still very wet in the ancient woodland, and all the dips and hollows are holding water, which on a quiet day makes for peace, tranqulity and reflections galore.
