The morning threatened rain throughout which led to wonderfully saturated colours in the local part of Epping Forest.
This is a hand-held 4 image stack at f5.6.
My first trip to Epping Forest and I was blessed with almost perfect colour and conditions - happiest four hours with a camera I've had for a long time.
Last Sunday I was lucky enough to have some time for photography. I decided to head back into Epping Forest to see if I still had my tree mojo. Here are three images I made while standing in the rain.
The furthest I’ve travelled since I began working from home back in March is Hampstead Heath, which is around a mile and a half away. Until yesterday I’d not had any inclination to travel any further, but the claustrophobia finally kicked in and I had to get out of north London. I took the camera for a walk around a quiet part of Epping Forest. The weather was pretty dreary and I wasn’t expecting to come back with anything special. I tried split toning the images in Lightroom but as expected they remained a bit flat. I then converted them to mono and some of the images sprang to life. I’ve kept the split toning which gives the images a warm feel instead of straight black and white.
I’ve never subscribed to the “light is everything” school of thought. Composition has always been my main concern: each photograph being a puzzle to solve. If the light is spectacular then that’s just an added bonus. I’ll post a few more of these up over the coming days. I don’t think I’m a black and white convert, but it does feel good to have done something creative for the first time in months.
The marvel is not just that some of the oaks and beech of Epping Forest date back many hundreds of years but also that they continue to flourish without a fully functional trunk. I can't guess the age of this oak but note the top trunk growing out of apparently nothing.
It had been a while since I had been in the car park for the Epping Underground Station, and had forgotten how big it is. This is right at the end; a wide variety of cars, a tube train just leaving for London, and a preserved train (which I'll return to in another picture).

The very last shot I took on a trip out with my daughter early one morning. After this the battery died in my camera.
It was a great shared experience that this photo always reminds me of.
Connaught Water is one of the most popular lakes to walk around in Epping Forest, largely because of the range of wildlife that lives here and its close proximity to Chingford.
This is from a couple of years ago, never gave this image a second look until today. If I can remember there was a light fog this particular morning.

Dick Turpin rode through here, Boudica made camp before sacking London and massacring the Romans, the history goes back to primitive man who made stockades here to keep cattle and protect their tribes.
Several areas of Epping Forest are still under water - nothing like the West Country but noticeable for all that.
A wetland area, currently just slightly swampy but will turn into a group of small ponds over the winter.

This is a colour photograph but the colour hasn't registered !! I checked it at 100% and a few leaves in the shadows have colour but that's it. Everything was totally covered with snow. This was taken two years ago; the weather now is horrendous rain all over the UK. What a contrast between winters.
