KCS SHDA arrived WYLIE WORLD with a new nanner

All Green At PN

A nice line up of matching painted Reading and Northern power can be seen on the engine house tracks north of the modern diesel shop at the railroads Port Clinton headquarters.

Lined up awaiting the call from L to R are:

RBMN 802 (EMD SW8 blt. Dec. 1950 as LV 253)

RBMN 5049 (EMD SD50M blt. Dec. 1984 as MP 5049 in UP yellow)

RBMN 1546 (EMD SW1500 blt. Feb. 1970 as EMDX 112 later IU 28 and CR 1606)

Amazingly this classic looking shop structure is decidedly modern dating from 1996 when the RBMN chose this site for their new centralized headquarters and shop complex. When the Reading Cluster was acquired from Conrail in 1990 nothing was here other than a lonely unsignaled switch in the middle of the woods. Everything seen here was created from whole cloth...impressive indeed!

Former Milwaukee Road SD40-2 174 had been patched for the Soo Line and renumbered as SOO 6347. It would be sold to EMDX and finally found itself as Wheeling and Lake Erie 7017.

It was seen in its bandit paint on an eastbound Soo Line trailer train heading for Chicago passing through Clinton, Iowa in 1988.

A trio of EMDX Oakway SD60s lead BNSF R-CHI4503 east through Western Springs Illinois on the BNSF Chicago Subdivision.

EMDX SD70ACe-T4 #7208 leads Norfolk Southern hotshot Intermodal Train 220 east through Tallapoosa, GA.

A trio of GP38-2's lead the charge as the Finger Lakes Railway's GS-2 job climbs the grade out of Martisco, New York and over a large fill that spans the valley of Ninemile Creek. This is the westbound return of the GS-2 job, bringing cars from Solvay back to Geneva with work in Auburn along the way.

BN 9280 West passes Division St. as it departs St. Paul, MN back in July 1998. Usually it was an EMD Oakway that wrecked a nice matched Cascade Green consists on coal trains back on the BN/BNSF, but this time it was an EMDX SD40-2. The blue SD40-2s weren't common in coal or ore service. This BNSF COLX empty has just departed Dayton's Bluff, after the CP brought it up the River Sub., and the fresh crew will take the empties back home to Willmar.

P97 crawls into town under dramatic skies with an ES40DC and one of the recently acquired ex EMDX ACes for power. Overhead, a large flock of seagulls (billions of birds one could say) are fleeing the bridge where they had been resting just before the train's arrival.

EMDX T4 ACe 7231 sits at IRM in Union, IL. This was just visiting for the event.

NS 220 lead by EMDX SD70ACeT4 7233 arrives at Inman Yard in Atlanta, Georgia on the morning of March 8, 2020.

WAMX 6033, an ex-UP SD60M that's now under the employ of WATCO displays its new-look paint scheme at Mid-America Car in Kansas City. I can't say that I'm particularly fond of the scheme, as I think that the nose would benefit from having some more yellow on it, be it a solid panel, stripes, or chevrons, but it is what it is, I guess. WAMX 6032 was there as well, still in UP paint, so I would assume that it will receive the same paint in short order. Ed.: These would never actually leave MAC in this paint, as the design was rejected by management. So, enjoy (?) this rare view of it!

In addition, BNSF SD40-2s no. 1858 & 1618 are siting outside of the shop waiting on a fresh coat of orange.

A BNSF grain train led by an EMD lease unit pauses along the Mykawa Subdivision south of Houston, TX at sunset. The rails are former Santa Fe and the lead unit is former Milwaukee Road.

I went out to shoot some fall color, and ended up finding a different shade of yellow.

EMDX SD70ace-T4 #7219 trails on westbound CN Train M311 at Carvel Alberta.

The 7219 is one of four units currently on the property. The last time I shot these units was in 2020, with CN passing on any orders at the time.

A pair of Oakway SD60's bracket an SD40-2 in front of the depot for a crew change with BNSF H NTWMEM1 21A. Once they swap out they'll be headed for Memphis down the former Frisco, today the BNSF River Sub.

I'm not exactly sure why I was in Chaffee that day, but you certainly won't be seeing this any time soon.

Conrail local train WCDA has pulled up into their Sheldon Secondary so that southbound Soo Line train #204 can pass in 1986. Soo Line had just acquired the Milwaukee Road and they hadn't started 'Banditizing" their locomotives yet.

By 1986, the siding at Sheff was in very bad condition. Derailments had happened so they spiked both ends until further notice (which would last til the end). So, trains needing to pass had to either head up into the Sheldon or Fowler secondaries here, which I saw more than once.

NYC Sheff "F" tower once stood near the tree above the caboose at left at the intersection of NYC's Egyptian Line and NYC's Big 4 line between Chicago and Cincinnati.

This great photo was taken by Brian Knight.

Milw SD40-2 #27 was built by EMD in July of 1973. The Soo Line acquired it and threw a bandit scheme on it and numbered it 6311, followed by EMDX #6311, NREX #6311 and finally GMTX #3312. Locomotive was still running and looking beautiful as of early 2021 at latest I saw. Here is a great roster shot of it as of 2020.

Milw SD40-2 #30 was built by EMD in July of 1973. The Soo Line acquired it and threw a bandit scheme on it and numbered it 6314, followed by EMDX #6314, WE #6314 and finally WE #7026. Locomotive is still running and looking beautiful as of today. Here is a great roster shot of it as of June 2025.

Alabama & Tennessee River Railway Freight Train Z389 departs Boyle’s Yard ( CSX’s Birmingham Terminal ) headed back to Gadsden, AL. after interchanging with CSX.

Rebuilt EMD GP40PH-2 4906 was built by EMD in 1969 as EMDX 25 and went on to the Penn Central and Conrail as their 3273. MPI rebuilt it into its present self and it now hauls commuters around Jersey and New York.

A clean Conrail Quality SD45-2 leads CSX Q432 north on the River Sub at Teaneck, NJ. There is a lot going on in this relatively common photo of two trains meeting at Teaneck. First, this is post-Conrail split, so it was uncommon to have an NS-owned SD45-2 is leading a CSX train. Months after the split, it seems 6654 had yet to be renumbered, making it still "pure Conrail". 6654 would soon be "patched" as NS 1700. It would be repainted twice, first in a coat of standard NS black and white and eventually in Erie Lackawanna gray, maroon and yellow. I believe Q432 had been Conrail symbol "OISE" (today's CSX Q434). The trailing unit is Electro-Motive leasing 6411, a former Conrail SD40. Finally, the center siding between Teaneck and Bogota was clearly still under construction. The line was graded and ties installed, but rail and ballast had yet to come.

CD Sub manifest Q316 has its normally huge assortment of power on the head end for transfer to the Cumberland Shops as it crosses the Ohio into Covington, Kentucky. What isn't normal is the lead power namely the EMDX Demonstrators which have been running on the LCL sub toward Nashville and back most of the Summer. After being worked on in Paducah these units are heading east to work a different territory unknown to me. Hopefully they'll be back working out of Cincy once again.

EMDX SD70ACe-T4 demonstrators 1606 and 1605 lead a CN X338 up the Chicago Sub, towards the St Charles Air Line at 16th Street Tower.

NS train 220 pulls ahead to spot another cut of cars in the receiving yard at Inman. Leading is EMDX 7233, an SD70ACe-T4 being leased by Kansas City Southern that, ironically, was originally built as part of an order for NS before they cancelled it. 3-8-20

Led by GP40-2 505, a US Sugar cane job rolls through the yard at the mill in Clewiston, Florida with a train load of freshly harvested sugar cane for processing. On the adjacent track, a yard job with a GP11 has just cut away from the rip track after spotting an empty ballast hopper here.

One of the leased Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4's is on the point of KCS train D-FPKC-05 lumbering down Main Track 4 of the KCT East-West Corridor at Penn Ave outside of KC's Union Station.

At Santa Fe JCT, this train will turn the corner to head north up the KCT North-Corridor and then across the Hannibal Bridge to BNSF's Murray Yard. Once on the BNSF, this will become BNSF train U-KCSFTL1-06M. This is one of several military trains bound for Fort Lewis near Tacoma, WA. 12/6/20.

A pair of former EMDX leasers with nothing but tiny "WE" stencils on the cabs bring train 214 east through Bolivar on June 13, 2020, still looking nearly identical to their days roaming class 1 railroads as leasers in the 90's. It's always nice when the dwindling number of non-tigers get matched up these days, plus there was just a sliver of nose light left by the time they got here, which will get tougher to pull off as summer moves in.

CN 271 is lead through Brantford behind a decent pairing. CN 3221 and EMDX 1605. I'm glad I went out for this one!

The KCS M-KCSH2-11 passing over Spavinaw Creek in Gravette, AR.

Lets go way back more than 13 years to my only trip to date to BNSF's northern transcontinental mainline on the former Great Northern Railway. Three spectacular nights were spent at the Izaak Walton Inn that included a fabulous cross country ski tour in Glacier National Park, some great meals, fun winter railfanning, and even a ride on BNSF's Essex Helper set one evening....

Before heading toward Essex some train chasing east of the mountains was had in less than ideal conditions. The snow is blowing fiercely and the temperature is NEGATIVE nine degrees, which may explain why this crew was heard on the radio trying to talk the dispatcher out of stopping at Browning for a pickup. Alas, they lost the argument, hence they are seen threading through the turnout at the east end of Browning siding at about MP 1121.9 on BNSF's Hi Line Sub. In the house track across from the Browning depot were two autoracks that one presumes were bad order set outs that had since been repaired.

This view was taken from the US Route 2/89 overpass and features a classic set of power that certainly can't be seen today. BNSF 8266 (EMD SD75M blt. Feb. 1996) leads EMDX 9081 (Oakway leasing EMD SD60 blt. Dec.1986) and BNSF 822 (GE C40-8W blt. Apr. 1992 still in as delivered Santa Fe warbonnet paint).
