A flashy pair of EMD's bring WSOR Train L249-07 through DBR Jct. on the WSOR Milwaukee Sub. This location is a long crossover between former Milwaukee Road and Chicago & Northwestern trackage operated by the WSOR.
The lead unit is an SD40-2, built in 12-1973, builder and frame number 73676-8 for the Rock Island as CRIP 4797. It later spent time on the Illinois Central Gulf as ICG 6047, was later returned to EMD and ran around as EMDX 6047 on various railroads before landing on the WSOR around 2002 first as WSOR 6047, then 4003, and later WAMX 4172 after the Watco takeover.

Ex-Southern SD45s bought by Wisconsin Central and in the Fond du Lac roundhouse for chop-jobs. 3115 became WC 6572 (and went through a couple more renumberings) and 3149 became WC 6577. July 4, 1994.
EMDX SD70ACe tier3 demos power CSX Stilesboro coal train N290 on August 23, 2013 at Cartersville, Georgia.
After having come into Topeka the previous night on the KCS "Chicken Train," the power got pulled down to the west end of town and parked in UP's Ruby Yard. This was taken just after a brief rain storm, 90 minutes or so after sunset, and the lighting was provided by an adjacent pet food manufacturer. Regardless, these new EMDX 'Nanners are BRIGHT!
A trio of GP38-2's lead the Finger Lakes Railway's GS-2 job as it heads east through Auburn, New York rolling through the State Street crossing after crossing the Owasco River. Standing in the background is the 1818 built Auburn Correctional Facility that gives the town the nickname of Prison City.

The Shreveport to KC manifest train works north on the Shreveport Sub. The train is just out of the small town of Hatfield. The train is working to the next crew change point at Heavener, OK. A lone EMDX lessor unit is on the rear end.
A 86 car loaded grain train slowly rolls south over the rugged roller coaster Shreveport Sub at MP 408. The train is between Hatton and Wicks, about 70 miles south of Heavener. On the back is a pair of EMDX yellow SD70's that assisted the train over many steep grades since being added in Pittsburgh, KS. At Wade, AR, most trains setout some if not all their DP consist units since the extra power is no longer needed for the trip. It is crazy though that the extra power has made over a 315 mile trip one way.
A long mixed freight with a long string of Schneider containers on the back crosses over to the other main for entry into the Kansas City Southern East St. Louis Yard.

Another one from the track of the dead tale, the very first FXE SD70ACe now reduced to pieces.
This engine was wrecked on March, 2024 in the town of Cofradía del Rosario, Jalisco, when the empty iron ore train this engine was trailing crashed head on into a manifest train that was waiting for this train to go into the siding. The lead engine of the iron ore train, EMDX 7221, is also on retired status, unsure if Progress Rail will ever repair it or not.
One of the empty gondolas on the head-end flew into the sky, destroying the rear end of the 4000 and landing on top of the EMDX Tier 4 ACe.

KCS train MKCESJ is southbound at milepost 31 on the Godfrey Subdivision, a couple miles from its rendezvous with UP's Springfield Sub north of Godfrey, IL. Leading the charge is Progress Rail (EMDX) SD70ACe-T4 #7211, an unexpected treat for a cool spring day.
The crew would end up stopping at the distant signal for the UP connection for nearly an hour, while absolutely nothing noticeable happened on UP.
Thanks to Carl and Sonny for the collaborative heads-up.
Usually BNSF's Northtown to Superior train has been running on the north end of the Hinckley Sub under the cover of darkness but today a 1300 call time afforded a few sunny shots north of Hinckley. BNSF is testing EMD’s new Tier 4 models (SD70ACeP4-T4) on these trains and it was nice to get a pair in sun.
With temperatures well below zero and the sun not yet reaching into the west end of Jefferson Canyon, a Montana Rail Link Whitehall Extra rolls through Cardwell, Montana and follows the Jefferson River on the 5th Subdivision. A pair of ex-BHP SD70ACe's lead a long train of coal hoppers and intermodal cars that were pulled from storage on the 7th Subdivision. and takes them east towards Billings.

We called these Oakways for the leasing arm EMD created to supply SD60s to BN. By 2001 the nose logo had faded due to the nice job Glendive did to keep the units clean. Here a fairly rare trio (for ore duty) leads an all-rail ore empty up the DM&IR at the North Cloquet Road en route to Minntac.
After fighting clouds as the train worked up Steelton Hill the sun made a fortuitous appearance here. After loading the train will head to the Fairfield Mill in Alabama (its blast furnace has since closed).

While working 50 to 60 hours Mon-Fri, when the weekends came it's was time to get trackside. The two big players in New England were Guilford and Conrail. Which is where I spent a lot of my time. For the next week or so Conrail will be the subject matter, so if you like 'Big Blue' stay tuned!
I have pulled sides with a purpose to show the B&A or Conrail's 'Boston Line' was not all C30-7A's. Starting with this one!

Out of the 24 Tier 4 ACe's that FXE leased, these blackberries were my favorite of the bunch.
Interesting to see that it kept the "sanitized locomotive" sticker from when it was leased to the KCS years ago.

Iowa Interstate ES44AC 503 brings up the rear DPU of a late running CBBI as it rolls across US Route 6 and heads into Newton, Iowa, which is typically where this train would get its crew. A hotbox issue west of Des Moines added several hours of delay to the usual timing.

BNSF 9242, the one and only Greenface, leads a string of coal east and up out of the Red River Valley just east of Hawley. I previously uploaded a tighter shot of this train; this one's a bit wider to allow things to breathe a bit.
This part of the Staples Sub was a favorite of mine. This shot was taken from the shoulder of State Hwy 32. In the background, you can see the two wooden bridges that span the "trench" the trains run through just to the east of town. The nearer wooden bridge was a magnet for me, and had I been able to, I would have taken this shot from there. But that's not the way the chase out of Dilworth played out.
If I knew at one point, I can't remember why the 9242 had to get reconstructive surgery leaving it with its unique all-green nose. I had caught this unit a few times during my stay in the northern plains.
The funny thing about this particular day is that I just totally didn't feel like being out railfanning. Glad I stuck with it because in addition to this train, I caught the South Local with a matched set of EMDX Geeps:

EMD Leasing GP38-2 #791 (ex CR/PC #7991) working for the BN, presumably in the Seattle area. Print is dated "early 90s" but doesn't get more specific than that. This was one of one hundred GP38-2s which were taken back by EMD after their 15 year lease expired, much to the chagrin of Conrail! Photographer unknown.
