One of the leased Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4's is on the point of KCS train D-FPKC-05 lumbering down Main Track 4 of the KCT East-West Corridor at Penn Ave outside of KC's Union Station.
At Santa Fe JCT, this train will turn the corner to head north up the KCT North-Corridor and then across the Hannibal Bridge to BNSF's Murray Yard. Once on the BNSF, this will become BNSF train U-KCSFTL1-06M. This is one of several military trains bound for Fort Lewis near Tacoma, WA. 12/6/20.
A pair of former EMDX leasers with nothing but tiny "WE" stencils on the cabs bring train 214 east through Bolivar on June 13, 2020, still looking nearly identical to their days roaming class 1 railroads as leasers in the 90's. It's always nice when the dwindling number of non-tigers get matched up these days, plus there was just a sliver of nose light left by the time they got here, which will get tougher to pull off as summer moves in.

Rounding the curve on the KCS Pittsburg Sub just to the south of the KCT diamond at Sheffield is a loaded grain train led by a solo EMDX SD70ACe-T4 leased to the KCS. This train came into town via the KCS Mexico Sub, and it has just utilized the KCT from Rock Creek JCT through Southwest JCT and down to KCS Crossing.

Lets go way back more than 13 years to my only trip to date to BNSF's northern transcontinental mainline on the former Great Northern Railway. Three spectacular nights were spent at the Izaak Walton Inn that included a fabulous cross country ski tour in Glacier National Park, some great meals, fun winter railfanning, and even a ride on BNSF's Essex Helper set one evening....
Before heading toward Essex some train chasing east of the mountains was had in less than ideal conditions. The snow is blowing fiercely and the temperature is NEGATIVE nine degrees, which may explain why this crew was heard on the radio trying to talk the dispatcher out of stopping at Browning for a pickup. Alas, they lost the argument, hence they are seen threading through the turnout at the east end of Browning siding at about MP 1121.9 on BNSF's Hi Line Sub. In the house track across from the Browning depot were two autoracks that one presumes were bad order set outs that had since been repaired.
This view was taken from the US Route 2/89 overpass and features a classic set of power that certainly can't be seen today. BNSF 8266 (EMD SD75M blt. What ever happened to these EMDX units that used to be all throughout the BNSF roster? And when did they go away? I know this particular unit went on as GMTX 2214 and got to sport a nifty Heart of Texas paint scheme, but I don't remember ever hearing about the EMDX Geeps going away for the BNSF (the Oakways, yes, but not these).
The M-VNKC (aka M-ESKCJ) heads north at "WR Tower" in Granite City, IL, led by KCS Veterans SD70ACe 4006 and Progress Rail (EMDX) SD70ACe-T4 7205.
Much to the locals' satisfaction, this pair has made the Kansas City-to-St. Louis run a few times over the past week or two. Unfortunately, its morning departure from KCS East St. Louis yard is not ideal this time of year, typically resulting in a backlit shot. Plus, it doesn't help that this train is "low man on the totem pole" when it comes to getting through some of East St. Louis' more notorious rail bottlenecks. The Terminal Railroad is usually more gracious to the many UP Z trains between Chicago and Texas or California; can't imagine why.
On a chilly January afternoon, the trailing unit on 421-08 sits in idle on the south track at around mile 4 of the North Toronto while counterpart train 420 passes by it on the north. Both trains had a leased EMDX SD70ACe-T4 trailing, and some empty CP container flats on the front of 421’s train allowed for this bit of a unique shot of the “ugly ducklings”. An arguably better looking CP 7027 is second out on 420, also visible if you look a little closer. GEs were the head end power on both trains, and I can’t really blame the crews for that, as modern EMD products are apparently riddled with issues.

These EMDX leasers were always an nice catch, but it was amazing how fast the fell off the BNSF roster.
This particular day was a great shooting day for me. It was another one of the "I don't feel like being out" type of days, but I'm glad I stuck with it, especially considering the shots I was able to get (which were routine at the time, but impossible to get a few years later)...
I unfortunately I never got this mans name during the tour, but as everyone gathered to watch the staged derailment to round out the 2025 convention at TTI, this man agreed to pose next to the EMDX 1608 for a quick photo.
Ten Oakways, yes ten of them…OWY 9092 followed by the 9023, 9073, 9055, 9086, 9078, 9032, 9005, 9093, and 9003 lead eastbound Burlington Northern empty coal train 12CK231 passing the Lochbuie Colorado overpass near the west switch of Tonville Siding on a perfect June 23, 1988 morning.
At the time, I was living in Denver and working a night shift. I worked from 7:00 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. and usually left the place exhausted after being up all night. But most mornings after work, (when the weather was good) I would swing by BN’s 31st Street Yard and Rio Grande’s North Yard on my way home just to see if anything interesting was getting ready to depart. I always carried my cameras in the trunk of my car “just in case”.
Well… one morning, probably half asleep, I spotted an eastbound coal empty in the BN yard with a long line of matching power and tired or not, I knew I was not heading home just yet. As I recall, I didn’t have to wait too long before I saw the train starting to move. Okay, so where to go to shoot it? I knew that empty coal trains on BN’s Brush Sub picked up speed pretty fast once out of yard limits. I jumped on the Interstate and motored towards I-76 that pretty much paralleled the railroad heading northeast out of Denver.
Along the way I made the decision to head for the Lochbuie exit near the west siding switch of Tonville Siding. I had photographed many trains there before and knew I would have a clear view to the west, I’d be able to see the eastbound signal and a had a wide shoulder along the road where I could park and keep an eye out for an approaching headlight. Not long after I arrived the eastbound signal at the west end of Tonville Siding flashed to green. That’s a good sign I thought.
But still no headlight in sight so I sat and waited. Now I must mention that this was not the first time I had been out early in the morning trying to take more photos after a long night without sleep. And on a couple of prior occasions, while sitting in the car waiting, I had dozed off and sat there sleeping until awakened by the roar of the approaching train. Once, when a train was not traveling too fast, I was able to get out in time and get the shot. Another time, up at Crescent, CO on Rio Grande’s Moffat Line I was not so lucky. With little warning, I was awakened to see the lead GP40 flash by before I could even get out of the car. Crap!
This time I was determined to not let the same thing happen. I got out of the car and stood on the overpass looking directly down the tracks. Still no headlight but soon after I did hear a distant horn at a grade crossing west of me. Okay, here we go I thought. It was time to check and see if I had all of the settings correct on my trusty Nikon FM-2.
Was my film advanced? Yes, it was. Check. Next I looked to see what frame my film was on. It’s not on frame 36 or past 36 is it? Many horror stories have been told by those who didn’t look to see if they were at the end of their roll of Kodachrome and when pressing the shutter button, nothing happened. But I was not at the end of the roll. Check. Were my aperture and shutter speed settings correct? Check. Lens in focus? Check.
By now a headlight had appeared in the distance and I was ready. The train with seemingly a wall of blue & white locomotives leading was closing on me quickly and when it filled the viewfinder…click…I got him! In a flash the wall of locomotives and empty coal hoppers rushed past me and were gone. I stood and watched them disappear in the distance. Yes, I could have chased him farther east but I had at least a thirty minute drive home, I needed sleep and by the time I arrived there I’d have barely eight hours left until I had to be heading back to my job for another long night.
Mission accomplished I thought. Ten Oakways leading, can’t beat that. It was a fun morning and I’d gotten my shot. Hope you all enjoy the image as much as I did creating it.

BNSF's U-KCSFTL1-06 is stopped at Hampton on the Ravenna Sub because of traffic ahead, actually 8 more westbound trains stopped this side of Ravenna. In addition, the 7219 didn't like to have it's picture taken and went belly up here, so the second unit was moved to the point at Aurora.
