I came back to Willmar today and saw this EMD demonstrator sitting in the yard. Interestingly, I saw one trailing on a manifest on the Wayzata Sub not long before I arrived. Not sure if it's just horsepower hours, or if BNSF is testing some.
Meh. Seems about the same.
CPKC train M258 rolls through M&O Junction enroute East St. Louis Yard. Of interest, leader 3998 was built as EMDX GM72, the second SD70ACe demonstrator, and also the second ACe in Belle paint.
Thanks to DL for the heads up, and thanks to the crew for turning the headlight back on.
I think I originally went out searching for a coal train with a pair of EMDX Demonstrators that I never did see but ran into this Q539 at Fairmount with a nice looking EMD consist. Cincinnati, OH - Atlanta, GA train Q539 rolls south through Rydal, GA on a gorgeous autumn evening in 2013.

A shiny pair of SD70ACe demonstrators lead Q685 south down the old L&N mainline as the Central Alabama piney-woods being to green up and bloom with the onset of spring. While CSX didn't end up placing any orders, it appears this pair now works for a Texas Unitlites mining operation and still wear this sharp blue & silver scheme.

On September 11, 2005 a quartet of Oakway Leasing SD60s (EMDX 9081, 9060, 9027 & 9016) was seen with an westbound coal train passing the power plant at Campbell, WY located at the north end of the Power River Basin.

After spending most of the morning on the Halton Sub news of an eastbound with one of the Progress Rail demonstrators trailing sent me west to Bayview. Here's #394 descending the last bit of the Dundas Sub with CN 3806 leading EMDX 7207.
State Line Tunnel, located in a nondescript valley on the remote western edge of Pennsylvania, erupts with the sound and particulates emitted from Wheeling and Lake Erie's daily eastbound #218, the habitually morning train over this portion of the railroad operating between Brewster, OH, and Rook Yard near Pittsburgh. A short train and 25 mph heat restrictions ensure a leasurely journey for the matched baby blue and white SD40-2s performing the work at the head end, both still donning the image from their stint in the Electro-Motive lease fleet. State Line Tunnel's moniker was derived with little confusion--its structure is buried entirety neath Pennsylvania soil, though the sunlight at the far (western) portal shines through trees of West Virginia's northern salient. The early 20th Century construction of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railroad--a "modern" route by most standards--tunneled and bridged its way through the rugged terrain of the Western Allegheny Plateau in an ambitious effort to create as flat and straight a railroad as financially realistic as possible without breaking the bank. Such a threshold was quickly discovered as a lack of funds from construction compounded with a financial panic in 1907 plunged the fledgling carrier into receivership less than a half-decade into operations. The subsequent century saw the P&WV rise from the ashes to become part of the famed "Alphabet Route" and bounce between an alphabet soup of stakeholders--PRR, NKP, NW, NS, and WLE. The latter took control in 1990 in a spin-off deal with Norfolk Southern, utilizing this impressive feat of route building as its Rook Subdivison to connect the extensive WLE network in Ohio to Pittsburgh and points east.

EMD originally built a couple dozen SD70ACe-T4 demonstrator units. some were painted for and delivered to Union Pacific, BNSF, and Norfolk Southern. Two of these units, EMDX 1608 and EMDX 1609, have been at the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, but are now making their way west. The units were sitting near the North Yard tower on this afternoon, waiting to be added to UP's MNYGR to head west.

With about 15 minutes left until the sun dips below the horizon, P98 zips west through Dover in some splendid lighting. NS 1230, one of the recently acquired ex EMDX ACes, is the only unit online for this 60+ car train and is putting on a show. This unit has spent well over half of its service life so far on the ECBU, with it first coming out here for use on P29, E32, and P97. It later went north to Roanoke, but then made its way back via the perpetual 350-P98-351 loop, which keeps units captive to here for weeks or even months at a time.
