I swear I could shoot nothing but the pickup men at a rodeo and wind up with a bunch of great pictures. I think what they do — all night — is as skillful as anything else going on in the arena. I mean, you try unbuckling a strap with one hand, at a gallop, while steering your horse into another horse.
If you ever go to a rodeo, don’t fall asleep after the timed event is over. Watch these guys work. It’s impressive. There’s no money in it, so you don’t see anybody photographing it. I don’t shoot for money. I shoot for fun. And this is as fun to shoot as the rest of the rodeo.

Problem Solvers brand nipple driver.
Worth every penny.
After attaching all the spokes and nipples to the hub and rim you use this tool. It drives every nipple to the exact same spot on the spoke.
A real time saver. We gave the wheel 3 passes with this tool, each time decreasing the distance the spoke stood out by a mm.
After get the spokes to a decent amount of tension, passes were given with the spoke wrench.
Finally I got my Social Security Card, so we immediately went and got me a drivers license. Showing my German license I still had to take the written test (easy), but not the driving test.

I've made a couple of custom spoke nipple drivers. The top one is self-centering and quickly seats the nipple during a build. The bottom one lets me keep driving even as the spoke starts to poke through the head.

My timing was off in the photo, but the driver behind the wheel of this car next to me was steering with his knees while holding a cell phone in one hand and a bottle of booze in the other. I almost threw my water bottle through his open window.
Taking his photo after Grant passed the written and driving tests. He only missed two on the written exam and had no points deducted on the driving exam.
