I just returned from a month in Tanzania. After leading my usual two-week safari, I stayed behind for a further two weeks. During that time, I delivered some training to two batches of Tanzanian Safari driver/guides in bird identification.
We went to Lake Manyara National Park as that has many waders that people often struggle to identify. There are so many species in Tanzania in the northern winter, so many different plumages, and even the same species (eg Ruff) can be of varying sizes and colour of bare parts that it is no wonder people struggle. The fact that the Palearctic waders are not there all year round doesn't help either.
As my favourite group of birds is waders, it was perfect for me! Whilst I was scanning, I saw a wader that I couldn't immediately identify. It turned out to be a Pectoral Sandpiper and ONLY THE SECOND RECORD FOR TANZANIA! I myself had only ever seen one before.
The Pectoral Sandpiper is a scarce / rare visitor to the UK with probably all records referring to vagrants from the Americas. The one we saw is more likely to be from somewhere like the Siberian Arctic than America though.
We went back later in the day to see if it was still there. We couldn't see it, but had a Red-necked Phalarope - a very rare bird inland in Tanzania.
Keep it between the cones, but at the same time put it to the test... the goal is to have confidence in how the vehicle handles, and your ability to drive it to get there safely.
