Times were a changing following the FirstBus takeover of GM Buses North. Traditionally time expired vehicles that were still half decent joined the Driver Training fleet for a final fling at life before heading for the scrap man.

The men in suits at First decided to send a couple of Atlanteans to the recently aquired GMN fleet from the Grampian fleet in Aberdeen for training purposes and the first to arrive is pictured in Atherton depot having just completed it's epic journey south.

As well as two native Standards, a former Kelvin Central Alexander Y Type bodied Leyland Leopard can be seen which was also meant for training. This was to replace the Ford coach used for manual upgrades but was never used at Manchester, the furthest it ever moved was the various locations around the depot to shift it from 'under the feet'. It would later disappear never to be seen again. The rear domeof one of the five Alexander 'Panoramic' bodied Atlanteans that arrived from Glasgow but never saw service can just be glimpsed behind the Leopard.

The Atlantean would later be painted allover white for training purposes and gained the fleetnumber 1423.

A quick visit trackside paid dividends this afternoon. Found LRVs 013 and 014 undergoing testing. And a bit of driver training as well!

Belshotmuir Main Street and Bus/Coach Depot.

Main Street is quiet with only a handful of passengers awaiting local services in both east and westbound directions. To the far right of frame, the rear of a Scottish Ambulance Service Driver Training Unit (DTU) can be seen, followed eastbound by a London style Taxi wearing all over advertising for Scotland’s other national drink, Barrs Irn Bru! Coming into frame westbound is a Roads Policing Unit (RPU) or “Traffic” Police Car of Strathclyde Police. As they pass, a selection of Scottish Citylink coaches in differing liveries from throughout the years, sit in at the local depot.

Closest to the Main Street, partially obscured by an advertising board for GoCompare.com, is a DAF Van Hool Alizee of West Coast Motors, bearing the cherished VRM of P100 WCM. Representing the oldest of the livery iterations on display here, it has the tag line “Citylinking...Smart Thinking” built into the fleetname. This model is only barely technically a Code 3, having received an updated destination board showing service 914 for Glasgow. This is a change from the Campbeltown destination upon release by Corgi Diecast.

Behind, and reversed into the garage for engine maintenance sits P492 FAS of Rapsons in a slightly more modern version of the livery, still maintaining the “Smart Thinking” slogan.

Directly behind FAS is my Code 3 repainted representation of a Scania Irizar PB showing the modern Citylink Gold service. Gold services are more restricted in their destinations, stops enroute and timetables, however have their perks to offset this. These include leather seats, free WiFi, free hot and cold drinks and snacks.

Finally, to the rear of the Gold Irizar is V74 DSN in a modern yellow, dark and sky blue with red lining, also with an updated tag line of “Connecting Scotland”. The rear of this model also features an updated contact telephone number, and for the first time, a web address - www.citylink.co.uk. DSN was owned by Tayside Public Transport, a subsidiary of the National Express Group which would later become Travel Dundee, and subsequently Xplore Dundee.

The overall Citylink operation has been in existence since March of 1985, undergoing a number of changes since then. It is now run as a joint venture between Stagecoach and ComfortDelGro.

New to First Cymru.

... in a bus! Not quite but Volvo B9TL 37081 YJ08 GVT sits among parked cars at First Bradford's depot awaiting its turn out on the road.

After the split of GM Buses into North and South, the former part had a slight problem with the driving school. Training HQ had been based at Bennett Street at the rear of Hyde Road garage, and although each depot had a double deck training bus, Hyde Road had been home to the coaches which were used for manual gearbox training.

With GMN being left without a manual test vehicle for license upgrades a suitable vehicle needed to be sourced. Salvation came in the form of TND102X from Hulme Hall Coaches. This had been new to Smiths Shearings as their 188 and was a Ford R1114 with Duple Dominant 53 seat coachwork. It is seen here at the rear of Atherton depot after a repaint into a red and grey based livery (Shades of LUT) and numbered 1440.

Stagecoach Manchester (Hyde Road depot) GX58MVF 22742 seen on Portland Street, Manchester on Driver Training duties

At Long Last! The 1st of August 2018 saw the highly anticipated reopening of Broad Street featuring the new bus only pedestrian zone. Broad Street closed in April 2017, and while it was scheduled to open again in October 2017 complications saw this delayed to January 2018, then May and then the end of July. Initially planned to open at might night, it instead opened at 6:30, meaning the first load of buses through town had to stick to the diversion.

Today saw Volvo B10BLE 62153 on driver training duties, she is seen here with a trainee negotiating Broad Street, final destination unknown!

Numerically the last of the eleven Lynxes purchased by PMT in 1990, this one spent all of its life locally at either Burslem or Crewe depots. Following displacement from service 20 by second-hand Scanias it was transferred to First South Yorkshire as a driver trainer, although the faded middle zero on its route number blinds hark back to its time at Crewe garage. It's seen in its driver training guise arriving at a POPS rally at the Wedgwood Visitor Centre. During its final days in passenger-carrying service with PMT it was a poor example of the Lynx, being very smokey and not particularly fast. What it was most renowned for amongst Burslem and Crewe drivers alike was its rattling cab windows, which for some reason could never be fixed. Rumour had it that during its early life Leyland engineers had stripped several panels from the side of the bus in order to try and track the problem down. Obviously they never managed to. POPS' late rally organiser Paul Pearson converses with the drive.
