The abandoned Moffett Mill

Lincoln, RI

January 30, 2021

"Constructed in 1812 by local mechanic George Olney, the Moffett Mill offers a rare glimpse of the early American machine shop. The Moffett Mill was among the first mills in the area to have new metal-working technology including a metal lathe and drill press. In the early 1800s, Olney made tools and repaired vital machine parts for the other mills along Great Road, including his own thread mill at the pond in Lincoln Woods, Stephen Smith’s Butterfly Mill, and Captain Wilbur Kelly’s mill at Old Ashton. Arnold Moffett purchased the mill in 1850, replacing the breast-style waterwheel with a more modern, water-driven iron turbine. He expanded into furniture making and wagon building. At the time of the Civil War, the mill’s second floor housed braiding machines used to produce laces for shoes and corsets. By 1880, gristmill orders accounted for a large share of the Moffetts’ business, and a sawmill produced boards and wooden boxes for customers in the area. By the turn of the century, the mill closed and the building abandoned. In 2000, the Moffett Mill was stabilized and restored, with the original equipment still intact. Today, the mill is open for occasional public viewing under the stewardship of the Friends of Hearthside."

Driven out by light.

November 19, 2010

Driven by the wind, the wafts of fog moved over the forest, sometimes completely enveloping the trees, then releasing them again the next moment and hiding the surroundings...

We've driven by the sign for Obsidian Dome countless times on trips up and down US Highway 395. We finally took the short road and spent a couple of hours exploring -- well worth a side trip, and a place to return to in cooler weather for a longer hike.

Obsidian Dome is a mile-long 300 foot high lava dome that is part of the Mono–Inyo Craters volcanic chain located in the Inyo National Forest. The Dome is essentially a big pile of shiny black volcanic glass that was formed by an explosion (a Phreatic Blast) when magma reached the water table, turned the water to steam, cooled and then turned to rock. The eruption date for Obsidian Dome is one of the best constrained prehistoric eruption dates in the world. Using tree rings, geologists have found that the eruption occurred in late summer 1350 CE.

There is not a lot of color in the formations to the left of the trail, so I've converted to black and white. The shine is from the fractured rock turned to glass by the heat of the explosion -- also known as obsidian.

Hope you have a lovely day whenever you see this. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

This is one-of-those scenes that I have driven past countless times over the years and said; I need to shoot that. There was always an excuse, however. Either I didn’t have a camera with me, or it was too dark or it was too bright, or the weather was bad, or there was too much distracting junk in the way, or something. Then the other day, on the way home from the theater, I ran out of excuses.

Please do not post notes on the image.

DJZ_2729-Edit: - Today I went to see a horse drive, an annual event put on by the Eaton Ranch (a 7,000 acre ranch), which is the oldest Dude ranch in Wyoming. The ranch is located about 15-20 miles west of the town of Sheridan. Just before winter, the ranch trucks the horses (anywhere from 100–200 horses) to their winter pasture which is east of Sheridan. Around the end of May, the horses are driven back through the town of Sheridan on 5th street, and then on to Soldier Creek road (as shown in this image), and take a left turn onto Beckton road where the ranch is located. The horses are moved along either at a Trot or a Canter, more likely a Trot. This drive is viewed by a number of people along the way.

This was my first time at this event. I was surprised to see the horses driven just off of the side of the road, with a few exceptions as you can see in this image. From videos I had seen, the horses were always on the road. After the horses had gotten past me, I saw the Cowboys had moved the horses back onto the road.

Kent County Council are taking part in a 7 week electric bus trial, run by Volvo Bus and their technical partner ABB as part of their 1 year demonstration programme across the UK. The bus, a Volvo 7900e, produces no emissions and is driven by electric motors, providing up to 80% lower energy consumption than an equivalent diesel bus.

Having been delivered to ARRIVA Kent Thameside at Northfleet earlier in the year and following the provision of a charging point at Greenhithe Station launch day for the Electric bus was set for Tuesday 20th March 2018 with it entering passenger service the following day. During the trial, the electric bus will recharge outside Greenhithe Station in under 6 minutes using Innovative OppCharge pantograph high-power charging technology. The OppCharge makes the range of the bus limitless by allowing the bus to charge at convenient locations along the route, charging within 30 seconds.

The electric bus will operate as an additional hourly service, running on the Fastrack A route between Greenhithe, Bluewater and Dartford from Wednesday 21 March to Wednesday 9 May bar a few exceptions.

On it's first day in passenger service, LF67 EVV is seen on the Busway about to pass over Marsh Street near The Bridge complex on the northern outskirts of Dartford whilst working route AE. Wednesday 21st March 2018.

Trying to look as shy, demure and innocent as the driven snow this ageing diva is, in fact, anything but! I just so love being a bit of a tarty flirt sometimes. (Must remember to varnish my toenails next time).

Alas I think I inadvertently chased some ducks into the path of hunters further upstream. I didn't see them, but the sound of the guns was close. Sorry ducks!

The Volvo F-series from the first generation does have a great appeal to me. During my childhood in the 80s I always saw the fleet of a regional hauler which had a couple of those. Also the German series ‘Auf Achse’, in which one of the main vehicles was a flat roofed F12 is still in my mind. Somehow I do feel more about trucks of four decades ago than the latest ones which all look the same to me. During the 70s, 80s and 90s there where more brands on the market and these decades were for the real drivers. Sometimes still with double clutch, no power steering and engines with around 350 hp max. It sounds like the middle age but I guess those trucks might still be useful nowadays. More than 20 years ago they went out of service and found a second life somewhere in southern Europe, Africa or Latin America. A couple of years ago I saw many Volvo F-series drawbar outfits in Peru and Bolivia like I saw in my neighbourhood during my childhood. And they’re still in service. Really fantastic!

It might not be a surprise such a truck was on my list to be build. One of the European transport companies which got a cult status is Stie's from Norway. For decades they ran a fleet of mainly Volvo’s and drove across Europe with refrigerated cargo. I found some useful pictures on a Norwegian forum of early 80s drawbar outfits. Sties used to have all three generations of F-series but the first generation is my favourite with a flat roof cab and vintage lettering on the bodyworks.

Many, many years ago I built a Volvo FH12 in the Nor-Cargo outfit, the predecessor of Sties, also in blue and white livery. But this time I should be a far more accurate model. The basis is 6x2 driven rigid chassis. Other than previous models I definitely wanted to have a factory green engine thus I collected a lot of sand green elements and used old style grey pieces for those who aren’t available in sand green. Of course it has a tilted cab with full interior and opening doors. The gear shifter is fitted on top of the engine. The interior is just like from trucks from the early 80s which lots of brown and medium orange. The finishing touch is with a typical roof rack, ladder etc. A quite common sight then but also on new Dutch trucks to give them and old skool look.

The drawbar trailer is a product of former Norwegian trailer manufacturer Dapa. The bodyworks were built by VBA, a company which also built busses and coaches on chassis delivered from the factory.

Both bodyworks are mainly built of 2x4 tiles and 2x2 inverted tiles on the inside. Yes, I also paid attention to the inner part. Even the cooling engines are having a replica of the engine and inner part inside the bodyworks. Rear end doors and side doors of course can be opened.

One of the benefits of scale 1:13 box outfits is that the smaller scale 1:17 unit do fit in the bodyworks; it saves some space when carrying those to events.

Nice details underneath are the spare wheels and snow chains which are inevitable. And also look at the blue ones on the drawbar; I found some which weren’t that cheap but really add something to the model.

The truck has quite some metal chrome elements like the wheels, front bumper, cooling engines and some parts of the engine. In my opinion it doesn’t look right without. All decals are supplied by JaapTechnic. At LEGO World last year I brought the model without decals and during the event Jaap took care of it. He really did a great job as the model looks far better with than without them!

With scale 1:13 comes quite a large model. This one is about 145 cm in length.

It took a while before I finished it October 2019 while I already started about a year and a half before. I had to put a lot of effort in it like getting the shapes of the cab right and acquiring all pieces need. But it really is a great addition to my vintage fleet!

Even the hybrid Canada Goose is acting very territorial today. Chasing away any bird likely to get between it and it's mate.

One of the very first mills to launch the Industrial Revolution in Britain, Gisbon's Mill stands in a countryside location in Hebden Dale, beside Hebden Water. The mill stands within the wooded valley known as Hardcastle Crags.

The mill, also known as Lord Holme Mill, was built about 1800 to produce cloth from cotton. The mill was driven by an internal water wheel, taking advantage of the tumbling force of Hedben Water. The mill is known to have employed 21 workers in 1833, and each employee was expected to work 72 hours per week!

The mill ceased operation in 1890, and was used as an entertainment centre by local inhabitants, who installed a cinema, dance hall, and roller skating rink, among other facilities. The mill was largely derelict following WWII, but has now been restored.

Driven by here for years, never on foot, just had to get a shot a few weeks ago when we got the light.

Yesterday I went out for a walk. Unremarkable but it’s the first time I’ve driven to the start of a walk since lockdown began. I drove three miles.

I followed part of the ancient track from Maddington to Codford. This was towards the end of the day just before I reached Oram’s Grave, where the inhabitants of Chitterne buried the body of James Oram who hung himself here in 1768. It’s thought other suicide victims are buried here, after having a stake driven through their heart.
