Red-Headed Woodpecker.
These woodpeckers are fond of open agricultural country with groves of dead and dying trees, particularly orchards. They often fly-catch, swooping low across a highway or along the shoulder of a road after flying insects. They store nuts and acorns, hiding them in holes and crevices. Red-Headed woodpeckers frequently are driven off by aggressive European Starlings, which occupy their nest holes, and by the removal of dead trees.
Their habitat consists of open-county, farms, rural roads, open park-like woodland, and golf-courses.
They breed from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec south to Florida and the Gulf Coast. Scarce in the northeastern states. They winter in the southern part of their breeding range.

I have driven past Kingston on the 401 hundreds of times enroute to or from destinations further east. It was always too close to home to warrant a stop on the outbound trip and on the way home it was always "No, let's keep going and get home". I ventured into downtown Kingston once 30+ years ago and one evening before that stopped here at the station and shot the Turbos on a gloomy evening. So recently, not really wanting to venture too far afield but will plenty of accumulated vacation time I found myself in Kingston for a few days. Most of the days were spend cycling but the evenings were free to hand around the station and check out the Via and CN action through town.
This is Ottawa - Toronto train #55 making its station stop and preparing to make a more or less on-time departure at 1941 after the allotted four minute station stop. The close to full moon is just rising in the east, making a quick appearance before being swallowed up by the cloud cover.

The staircase is relatively moderate in terms of the height of the steps and the distance between them.
I wanted to show a little boy that you can ride down there at a leisurely pace.
So I got on my bike at the top and had a firm grip on the brakes so that I didn't go too fast.
However, I had misjudged things a little, as the wheels didn't have any contact with the ground as I was going downhill, so I ended up going faster than I initially thought.
I had already seen myself falling, but just as I reached the bottom I was able to come to a halt without crashing my bike.
I was lucky.
Overconfidence is rarely good and can end quite badly with broken bones in old age.

Rounding up a herd of young steers for participation in a team roping event. The steers wear protective headgear so that when they are lassoed the skin surrounding their horns won't be damaged. The cowboys and/or cowgirls work in teams of two on horses. One lassoes the horns of a released steer, and the other the back leg(s). The ropers are timed how fast they can perform this skill, which originated on open range ranches. The ropers often miss the steer and it "gets away." Even if it is successfully roped, the steer is immediately released to return to its herd.

Galleries and corridors wind you by harvesters, wheel and crawler track-type tractors, combines, trucks, art and photo galleries.
Collet 1400 class 0-4-2T steam locomotive No. 1450 is sandwiched between two auto-coaches as it approaches Bewdley Tunnel during Severn Valley Railway’s autumn steam gala on 19th September 2019.
Autotrains were commonly used by the Great Western Railway on lightly used branch lines and could be driven from the locomotive in one direction and from the autocoach (or auto-trailer) in the other, to save the engine having to change ends of the train for the journey back.
I reached the small plateau between the road and the tipping area via a makeshift path for workers. There was very little space there and I had to move on immediately because I would have no room for my safety if a slag train was rolling. Duncan and Jane had stayed by the car. Our parking space was official, but it was also a rest or waiting area for the Ochrona.
When I saw TEM2-246, it was clear that a photo was a must. The locomotive had already driven away from the empty slag pans, the crew was doing routine checks on the right-hand side. So let's go, forward, and just don't cross the old compressed air line that you can see in the foreground. That was enough for me to take a photo.
On the left in the picture you can see two slag wagons behind the crane. The tipping had already finished and so had the rinsing with extremely hot water.

Really just liked the colors and I've driven past this building numerous times before I finally stopped, climbed the hill for a vantage point and took some pics.

Die Aufnahme enstand südlich St.Goarshausen an der rechten Rheinstrecke (KBS 466).
Der Zug hatte mit ca 1,5 Stunden Verspätung den Loreleytunnel durch fahren und passiert nun die markanten Felsen mit dem Aussichtstempel Leiselfeld nördlich dem Betriebsbahnhof Loreley.
Die schon lange anhaltenden Trockenheit hatte die Natur schon früh im Jahr ausgedöört und sorgt schon viel zu früh für eine fast herbstliche Laubfärbung.
The creation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images of the solar corona is a fascinating challenge, driven by the need to capture the vast dynamic range of brightness that defines these celestial phenomena. This endeavor marries the artistic with the scientific, uncovering details and structures of the corona that a single exposure could never reveal.
This particular HDR image of the solar corona was meticulously crafted from a series of exposures captured during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. My setup for totality included a Canon Ra camera, a Canon EF200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens paired with a Canon 2x III Extender for an effective focal length of 400mm, set at F/8, ISO 200. The camera was mounted on an iOptron SkyTracker, and I utilized a laptop with the SET'n'C (Solar Eclipse Timer and Controller) for precise camera control. The range of exposure times spanned from 1/1000 to 4 seconds, encompassing 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 seconds.
During the eclipse, I successfully captured four complete series of photos at these shutter speeds, all in CR3 format. I then processed these files in a Raw editor, adjusting texture, clarity, and denoise settings before saving them as 16-bit TIFF files.
In Photoshop, I centered the photo by loading the images into layers (File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack...) and utilized the “difference” blending mode for layers, manually centering each image using the arrow keys. An average shift calculation from image to image helped address the challenge of centering overexposed images, which could not be simply aligned based on the moon alone.
To create a mean image, I converted the selected layers into a Smart Object and applied the Mean stack mode (Layer > Smart Objects > Stack Mode > Mean), then flattened the image and saved it as mean.tif. For the moon to be at the center of the image, I cropped it accordingly.
I applied a Radial Blur in Photoshop (Filter > Blur > Radial Blur) with the settings: Spin as the Blur Method, Best for Quality, and an Amount of 10, ensuring the moon was centered in the image. This blurred image was saved as blur.tif.
To subtract the blurred image from the original, I used the Apply Image command (Image > Apply Image), setting the source to blur.tif, with the blending mode set to Subtract and an offset of 128. I then compressed the dynamic range using the Levels tool (Image > Adjustments > Levels) and saved the file as subtract.tif.
To multiply the mean image with the subtracted image, I once again used the Apply Image command, setting the blending mode to Multiply. The final image was saved as done.tif.
Final touches were made using Topaz Denoise, the Raw Filter editor, and other Photoshop tools to enhance the image.
The final HDR composition is not merely a visual feast but a technical triumph that reveals the complexity and elegance of the sun's atmosphere. These images are invaluable, providing insights into solar physics and the forces that shape the corona. They also offer a breathtaking visual experience that conveys the awe-inspiring beauty of solar eclipses to a global audience. Through this HDR image, the profound beauty of a transient celestial moment is captured, enriching our appreciation and understanding of the cosmos's wonders and presenting the solar corona in a captivating new light.

The day I left Galway for Killarney, I woke up before sunrise, and by 4:30pm when I took this photo, I'd driven pretty much all around the Dingle peninsula, and had spent some time in the morning photographing the sunrise in Galway and in the afternoon walking around Dingle Town.
Immediately before photographing Coumeenoole, I'd been to the Dunquin Pier a few miles up the coast. I didn't go down to the water on either beach, just a bit tired out and I figured the photos looking down at the beach were actually more picturesque.
There are three gals down on the beach taking a selfie, so you can see it's a ways down from where I was standing. Plus, at the end of the path there you can see a couple of warning signs. They show a stick figure tumbling down some falling rocks. So the path down to the shore isn't easy!
I hope those gals didn't get too tired out climbing back up to the parking lot.
CSXT Framingham based local L004 has been on duty more than three hours and is just now starting north. They are technically still inside the Framingham Yard limits as they trundle northbound on the Fitchburg Branch at about MP QBU35.6. The entirety of the branch is designated as Other Than Main Track with this local operating at Restricted Speed but not exceeding 10 MPH the whole way making for an agonizingly long round trip.
The two ex Chessie GP40-2s are crossing the short deck girder bridge over the Foss Reservoir/Sudbury River with a big train of more than 30 cars. Have you ever driven the Mass Pike in the Framingham area and looked over your shoulder to the south and seen a grafitti covered bridge and wondered what train crosses it? Well now you know, because the eastbound lanes of I90 are just 100 or so ft to the left of the train. a
This trackage dates from 1855 when the Agricultural Branch Railroad opened between Framingham and Northborough. In July 1866, the railroad opened a 14-mile extension to a connection with the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad at Pratts Junction in Sterling. The next dozen years were rather convoluted as many small independent lines began to congeal into larger systems and by 1879 the route was part of the Old Colony Railroad, then ultimately came into the fold of the New York, New Haven, & Hartford in 1893.
This line, like its sister route to Lowell, was one of only three incursions of the NH north of the defacto "Mason Dixon Line" of New England Railroading into what otherwise was the exclusive domain of the Boston and Maine. For virtually a century, with few exceptions, the NH ruled CT and RI and everything in MA south of New York Central's Boston & Albany subsidiary which ran in a virtual straight line between its namesake cities bifurcating New England.
Today this 30 mile route meandering northwest is the last CSXT owned branchline in Massachusetts, with all the rest of any length that they still operate having been sold to MassDOT. The branch seems to have a solid future thanks to the addition of a busy new demolition debris customer near the end of the line in Leominster a few years ago supplementing stalwarts like Ken's Foods, Nucor, and Bestway Lumber.

Anyone who has driven on I 26 near the Asheville airport exit has probably seen the large planting of sunflowers and wildflowers. If you park at the rest stop, it is a short walk to the flowers. I spent almost 2 hours there and got so many great shots. More to come.

If you've ever driven across Interstate 40 in Texas, you will probably recognize this leaning tower. No, it isn't about to fall over. It was moved to this location by Ralph Britten as a roadside attraction for his truck stop. He installed it at this angle on purpose to bring in customers. It worked well and brought in a lot of curious people. The business burned down in the 80's and now the City of Groom, TX maintains the tower. Another interesting story on Route 66.

Wind has driven the snow hard, plastering it to these cottonwood trees at the edge of the village. Plains Cottonwoods are among the few trees that grow on the northern prairie (others include Manitoba maple, trembling aspen, green ash, willow and chokecherry). In photos of Val Marie from 90-odd years ago, there are no trees. Pretty bleak compared to what thrives here today. Cottonwoods provide food and shelter for a large % of prairie wildlife, and that includes nesting sites for raptors.
In this shot, across the dark field where Carmen pastures her horses we can see Christmas lights at Maurice Lemire's, behind his trees, which include an extensive spruce grove. He planted them all many years ago. Now they attract birds year round including nesting Great Horned Owls, and serve as a wind break for his house and garden. We need trees as much as the critters do.
That's the last from my night walkabout; not sure what I will post tomorrow but it won't be a night shot.
