It is the third highest mountain in Brazil, situated on the border of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states. It is the highest point in both states. It was historically considered the highest mountain in Brazil until 1965, when Pico da Neblina and Pico 31 de Março, next to the Venezuelan border, were explored, measured, and both found to be higher. The peak is said to have been so named after Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, ordered a flag to be flown on top of it.
It is one of the major attractions of Caparaó National Park, accessible from the nearby town of Alto Caparaó. That town and the entrance to the park lie in Minas Gerais, but the summit of Pico da Bandeira lies in Espírito Santo.
The summit is accessible to hikers of most age groups, with only very limited fitness requirements. The track from the park entrance to the summit track [8 km (5.0 mi)] can be driven by most vehicles, and the summit track itself runs for approximately 9 km (5.6 mi), with a further 1,000 m (3,280 ft) climb.

I climbed the third, fourth and sixth in Brazil this weekend. Only the sixth mountain is challenging.

Lake (lac) Tasiujaq drains several large rivers and is bordered on its west shore by steep cliffs (Hudsonian Cuestas) that are the highest in the province of Quebec.
Lake Tasiujaq is a vast brackish water lake with a narrow opening (called the Goulet) between cuestas to Hudson’s Bay. A large volume of water surges through this bottleneck and is driven by the rise and fall of the tides. The powerful flow ensures that the waters of the Goulet never freeze in winter. Lake Tasiujaq is one of the largest natural lakes in Quebec and is included in the boundaries of Tursujuq national park.

Die meisten Besucher kommen zum 236 m hohen Mandalay Hill, um von der Terrasse der Wunscherfüllungspagode den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen. Von hier oben hat man einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Stadt mit ihren vielen Klöstern, den Fluss Ayeyarwady, der die Lebensader des Landes ist, sowie in der Ferne die Shan Berge.
Viele Touristen werden auf den Berg hinaufgefahren. Schöner ist es jedoch,MYANMAR,burma - zum Sonnenuntergang auf dem Mandalay -Hill
die 1700 Stufen vom Südeingang des Berges hinaufzulaufen. Vorbei geht’s an Souvenirläden und Essenständen. Auf halber Höhe erreicht man eine große goldene Buddhafigur, die mit ausgestrecktem Arm auf die Stadt Mandalay zeigt. Der Legende nach sagte Buddha, dass am Fuße dieses Berges, im Jahr 2400 des buddhistischen Kalenders, hier eine große Stadt entstehen werde. König Mingon verlegte aus diesem Grunde im Jahr 1857 die Königsstadt von Amarapura hier an den Fuß des Berges. Immer wieder kommt man bei der Besteigung des Berges an Opferstellen und Buddhafiguren vorbei.
Die Pagode auf dem Gipfel ist eine architektonische Meisterleistung. Sie besteht aus vielen kleinen offenen Räumen, die durch große Rundbögen voneinander getrennt sind. Die Wände sind über und über mit Glas- und Spiegelmosaiken bedeckt. Eine besondere Stimmung entsteht, wenn sich die rote, untergehende Sonne in den Mosaiken spiegelt.

Most visitors come to the 236 m high Mandalay Hill to enjoy the sunset from the terrace of the Wish Fulfillment Pagoda. From up here you have a breathtaking view of the city with its many monasteries, the Ayeyarwady River, which is the country's lifeline, and the Shan Mountains in the distance.
Many tourists are driven up the mountain. However, it is nicer to walk up the 1700 steps from the south entrance of the mountain. We pass souvenir shops and food stands. Halfway up there is a large golden Buddha figure, pointing at the city of Mandalay with an outstretched arm. According to legend, Buddha said that at the foot of this mountain, in the year 2400 of the Buddhist calendar, a great city would arise here. For this reason, in 1857, King Mingon moved the royal city of Amarapura here to the foot of the mountain. Again and again you come across sacrificial sites and Buddha figures when climbing the mountain.
The pagoda at the top is an architectural feat. It consists of many small open rooms, which are separated from each other by large round arches. The walls are covered all over with glass and mirror mosaics. A special atmosphere is created when the red, setting sun is reflected in the mosaics.

Barrel racing! The horse and rider race into the arena, weave a "clover-leaf" pattern around three barrels, and race back past the finish line as quickly as possible. What can you expect from a former high school yearbook photographer? Basically I’m a portrait photographer of inanimate objects. There is never a doubt about what the main subject is. When I encounter an object that seems to be photogenic, I treat it as if I were doing a portrait of the queen of England. Lighting, framing, perspective, etc. must all be considered of course. Call it “in your face photography” if you wish, but please don’t tell me to back up and include more context. This is my style and it is what it is. Perhaps I was ossified by having only an old Minolta film camera with the standard 50 mm. lens to work with for the first forty years of my photographic life. Seeing the world through a nifty fifty! I guess I am not very artistic after all. I never did look good in a beret.

P.S What is it with mean spirited people who love to pick on the soft hearted? I read about here on Flickr and it happens in real life too. Get a life!
For the people that get picked on, I understand; It is disheartening when it happens you feel deflated and shocked but then you fight back by not changing who you are. That is the only way to win or they keep doing it because they're miserable so they want to make you just as miserable. Don't give them the power or satisfaction.
For the sociopaths; If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. The world doesn't need to hear it.

Having driven from North Platte and stayed the night in Chadron, I was ready to embark on the slowest train of my trip, the every-other-day train from Rapid City to Crawford, Nebraska. With an 0800 departure from Dakota Junction, I scouted the line as the train progressed. Mind you, northwestern Nebraska doesn't offer much besides the undulating hills and a few creek bridges. I noticed I was traveling Old U.S. Highway 20, the longest road in the US. This section had long been abandoned after being rerouted nearby. Just imagine driving this and seeing a train was the only diversion from the road. The slowly clearing cloud cover helped as the train ambles along at 10mph through the sparsely populated land on its way to Crawford.

Our route then takes us through the very best scenery and roads that the area has to offer before heading into new territory with an overnight halt at St Andrews. Day 2 sees crews covering some famous ‘Flying Scotsman’ roads as they head into the Cairngorms and a halt in Aviemore. The final day will take a less than direct route to ensure crews are kept busy before arriving at the world famous Gleneagles Hotel for the final control and post event festivities.
Our Route Designers have been busy crafting another first-class journey. This combines scenic Regularities on remote country roads with exciting Special Tests where you can enjoy your fine vintage cars to their full. The competition will be suitable for all levels of experience with three days of exclusive vintage motoring and great camaraderie in prospect.

We've driven by this wreck more times then I care to admit and never stopped to grab a photo. On today's occasion we were on our way back from testing our mettle in the extreme cold at Niagara Falls and finally decided to stop. The ice offered a perspective we hadn't seen before and the sun came out for a few minutes to provide some contrast against the snowy sky we were driving back in to.
I believe the ship is known as La Grande Hermine or alternatively, The Big Weasel - although I'm not sure where the latter came from. Like most grand schemes, there is a colorful history to it and if you're interested, check out the link below.

World's first steam powered clock
The insides of this clock is where the magic begins....
Built in 1977. Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver. Owned by the City of Vancouver, BC Canada

The world's first steam powered clock has been created for the enjoyment of everyone. The live steam winds the weights and blows the whistles. Every 4.5 minutes one steel weight will travel by steam power to the top of the clock. The gravity driven "falling ball" drive was 'engineered' by Douglas L. Smith. Each quarter hour the clock will sound the Westminster Chimes. The large whistle will sound once on the hour. The steam is supplied by the underground system of Central Heat Distributor's Limited. The component parts cost $42,000 and the clock weighs over two tons.
A few years ago the clock was refit and is not entirely steam powered. It also has three small electric motors to help operate two internal fans, one of which blows the steam out the top, and another that controls the valves that play the tunes on the five steam whistles mounted atop the clock case.
The large central whistle, which was taken off the CPR steam tug Naramata, counts off the full hours while the four auxiliary whistles chime the Westminster Quarters every quarter hour. The number of chimes matches the number of quarter hours that have passed.
Gastown is the original settlement that became the core of the creation of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Currently, it is a national historic site and a neighbourhood in the northwest end of Downtown Eastside, adjacent to Downtown Vancouver.

Storm-driven waves at Kismet, Fire Island National Seashore, New York It was not a day for swimming, even if it was warmer. I like the mist in the air above the crashing waves and the two distant fishermen who give a sense of the scale of the waves.-- October 7, 2024
Amtrak P42DC 130, the Phase II heritage unit, leads train 50, the 'Cardinal', out of Chicago Union Station on a frigid evening with wind-driven snow. Up front are several cars- including a Surfliner coach- bound for maintenance work at Beech Grove Shops outside of Indianapolis, and behind those, the rest of the 'Cardinal' consist, second locomotive and all. Until fairly recently, the head-end Beech Grove cars would have been carried on the 'Hoosier State', but since that train's discontinuance, that lowly work falls to the "Bird". The next day, it would be in Washington, DC.
We've driven past the turnoff to Devil's 4 Mile Road for years. Finally decided to take a little extra time on our way home and explore the road. This little limpid gem was one of the delights of that detour. No Devils were seen. The road is actually 4 miles long.
