The exhibition Uncertain States of America has been prepared as a survey of recent developments in American contemporary art by three of Europe’s leading curators: Daniel Birnbaum, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Gunnar B. Kvaran. First shown at The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo (October 2005), this project comprises a remarkably succinct compilation of recent evolutions in painting, sculptures, video and other artistic forms used by the new generation of American artists. Uncertain States of America offers an expanded look at a series of major installations by an emerging generation of artists (most of them were born after 1970). Their source material derives not only from today’s media-saturated world, free-form use of new materials, techniques and procedures which permeate each other and are juxtaposed, but also a canny knowledge of new art-historical references and an ability to respond in a complex and sophisticated way with a various extent of personal commitment as well as a certain distance in an age of political and social dissonances. Uncertain States of America is the result of an extensive, two-year, research project by the curators, who conducted more than 500 studio visits throughout the United States, compiling over 2000 files on young American artists. Their selections reflect an astute, yet contentious, assessment of the current state of American art and culture. “The exhibition is not entirely American—influences come from everywhere,” state the curators. “In a period where the official political culture of the United States is viewed with great skepticism on the other side of the Atlantic, it seems important to remind ourselves of the complexity and at the same time the variety of the American artistic scene. The ‘Uncertain States of America’ are not only uncertain, they are many.”
Back to the Drawing Board: I'm teaching myself to draw again, using a tablet, and am documenting the whole embarrassing process.
Only this is not embarrassing at all. This is amazing, if I do say so myself.
I am really, really happy with the ears and the eyes. But the ears, espcially, since translucence is so incredibly hard to capture.

This was taken when Holly was still in the Chemo phase of her Breast Cancer battle.
Which she won, by the way. She is now cancer free.
Holly's carotid artery had a catheter..A "Port". Every trip to the hospital included blood work. Then the cancer killing drugs were pumped in through the same hole.

Last night I looked at old videos of a sixties tv-series staged in the Middle Ages. They include very slow takes. So wonderful for drawing quickly. Filled at least 15 pages.

Tributaries explores the power and presence of water — past, present, and future. This interdisciplinary exhibit draws on local and regional experiences with hydropower, watersheds, water bodies, dams, and water flows — from Almonte to Maniwaki — incorporating historical elements related to immigrant labour and the wool industry. The exhibit features Emily Rose Michaud’s living tapestries, cyanotype drawings, maps, and paintings, layered with the sounds of water, Gaelic folk song, social and political speech, and music from Esmerine’s atmospheric melodies.
Workshops and talks took place over the course of the three month exhibit, to promote the environmental theme, and to make the art more accessible to members of the community through live demonstration and discussion. Workshops included cyanotype; living tapestries and cedar tile wood-burning.

Emily Rose Michaud is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working at the crossroads of community organization, ecology and civic participation. Her work encompasses painting, drawing, land-based art, and writing. She has exhibited nationally, both in and out of the gallery and has attracted international media attention for her Roerich Garden Project in Montréal. Michaud was creative director and co-editor of The Roerich Garden open book project, (2008-2011) and has contributed essays and content to anthologies including DIY Citizenship: Critical Making and Social Media, MIT Press (2014), and Thinking With Water, McGill-Queen’s University Press (2013). She holds a BFA from Concordia University (Montréal) and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa. She lives in Gatineau.
