This is a Christmas ornament, the ugliest Christmas ornament EVER! It's supposed to be a circus seal with a ball on its nose. It's yarn wrapped and hideous. The story behind it and why I keep it and why it goes on the Christmas tree every year goes like this: When my daughter was two years old we were visiting a store and in the store they had a basket of Christmas ornaments they were giving away (I wonder why?) and I told her she could pick one out and this is what she chose. I asked her again if that was really the one she wanted and she assured me it was so this is what we came home with. I keep it and use it every year because it's a reminder of her two year old vision of beauty plus I get to tease her about it unmercifully (probably the real reason I keep it). It goes on the tree each year. In the back. At the bottom. Oh! And her taste has improved considerably in the past 35 years! She now has six children of her own choosing ugly ornaments for their own tree!
I'm a day early on this one because I didn't have time for a fence today which I'd really rather spend more time on than something ugly.
(That's supposed to be a shadow at the bottom there. Like I said I didn't spend a lot of time...)
This piece is inspired from James 4:8 - Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
It is easy to get drawn to this things of this world mainly because of the promises they make. They make it all look downright attractive and naturally we keep God aside and we head towards those things. But not so fast! Non of the promises the world makes, it never keeps because if you look around you, you’ll see how rapidly changing the world is and it changes because it is never consistent. Nothing the world offers lasts long and it more or less like smoke in the air- one minute it’s there and the next it’s gone. Rather draw yourself unto God because our God never changes and our God has never broken a promise that He kept. This is all the reason that you need to realize that God is the one that you should draw yourself towards.
I pray to everyone in the world that you will gravitate towards the love of God so that you may realize that He satisfies like nothing else in the world. It is only through Him that you will be saved.
It’s been a while since I made a typographic piece and I am mighty proud of this one. I love you and God loves you even more and never forget that. Never forget to be kind to those around you as well. God Bless You!
Blessings,

Name: Sara Glaberson
Title of artwork: Draw(4)
Materials: Graphite on etched black enamel, sterling silver
2"x 1 1/2"
Brooch (wearable)
Notes: Due to the nature of reflective graphite on a matte black surface, the image is invisible from some angles, and reveals itself from certain angles when the viewer gets very close. This is hard to experience from a photograph.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I’m interested in how the meaning of images shifts when they are located on the body. Jewelry draws on the private relationship between the wearer and the piece, and on the public relationship between the wearer and the viewer, the gazer and the seen. These interactions present an opportunity to explore the connections between voyeurism, power, and intimacy.
This work echoes the small scale of eighteenth century English portrait miniatures. I melt black enamel onto pieces of copper, and then etch it to create a matte surface rather than a glossy sheen. I carefully choose pencils to achieve a certain reflective quality; the drawings vanish and appear again from different angles, pulling the viewer in close.
The drawings all appropriate images from Baroque paintings, which were designed to convince the public that there was grandeur and grace in a life of Christian piety and devotion. When cropped and taken out of context, however, the images read very differently, appearing seductive in a different way—even though the content has not been altered.
Multiple levels of granularity, from overlapping large scale shapes to scattered mid scale shapes to very fine textures that have even finer detail. Mostly by chance.
