Today I’d like to show you my absolute favorite photo – a picture I’ve never shared on Flickr before.

It’s been quite a while since I took it. The photo was captured back in April 2018. At the time, we were out quite often, always hoping to photograph lightning over Berlin. But somehow, almost every thunderstorm cell seemed to disappear just before reaching the city. So it wasn’t unusual for us to head home without capturing a single lightning strike.

But not this time.

I was lucky enough to capture this particular lightning strike during a 20-second exposure. My friend Thomas was there with me, but unfortunately, he missed it.

There wasn’t another lightning strike anywhere near this size that evening. And since then, I’ve never seen – let alone photographed – another one quite like it.

I honestly believe this was a pretty special one. That said, I don’t really know much about lightning and I wouldn’t consider myself a storm chaser either. I was simply incredibly lucky to be in the right place, at the right time, with the shutter open.

In any case, this has remained my absolute favorite photo to this day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

“Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. I do not seek or conjecture either of them as if they were veiled obscurities or extravagances beyond the horizon of my vision; I see them before me and connect them immediately with the consciousness of my existence.”

-- Immanuel Kant, Critique of Practical Reason

A spectacular wide-angle view captured from the high Dnieper cliffs near the historic village of Trypillya, looking towards the town of Ukrainka, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. The vast mirror of the Dnieper River, divided by a lush green island, under a dramatic and textured summer sky filled with layered clouds. The elevation of these historic cliffs offers a perfect vantage point to feel the scale of the mighty river and the modern silhouette of the distant town.

The Cucuteni-Trypillia culture (c. 5400–2750 BCE) is a remarkable Eneolithic archaeological phenomenon that spanned modern-day Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania. Discovered in the 19th century by archaeologist Vikentiy Khvoyka near the village of Trypillia, this society was characterized by advanced agricultural practices, highly sophisticated painted pottery with innovative firing techniques, and massive two-story proto-cities that housed up to 15,000 residents. These settlements were ritually burned to the ground every 60–80 years before the population relocated. Centered around the cults of the sun and fertility, their rich spiritual and technological legacy left a mark on the development of early European civilizations.

The chapel of Agia Paraskevi on the top of a hill in the village of Petroporos offers a view of the landscape from old elementary school reading books. It is surrounded on one side by an inexplicable geological phenomenon of a huge crater intertwined with folkloric legends that are kept alive to this day.

On the other side is the very important for the region archaeological site of ancient Pelinna with massive walls and other scattered findings.

The proximity to livestock areas and the unobstructed view of the sunset provide opportunities for powerful experiences for the photographer.

Ancient theater of Dodoni

The ancient theater of Dodoni in Epirus is one of the largest and best preserved ancient greek theaters. The capacity of the theater is 18,000 spectators. The theater of Dodoni was part of the Panhellenic sanctuary of Dodoni and was constructed in the 3rd century B.C. by King Pyrros of Epirus (297-272 B.C.) who wanted to decorate the areas of his kingdom with architectural monuments and buildings. At the same time the small theater ancient Amvrakia was constructed. The hollow of the theater of Dodoni was placed at the foot of Mount Tomaros in a natural cavity to take advantage of the sloping terrain, which was the usual practice in the construction of ancient greek theaters. The orchestra of the theater is not a complete cycle and has a

This gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule (this is the old town in the photo).

A small flock of sheep graze the lush grass in the area of ??Fanari, Karditsa. In the background, the small but historic castle of the village is clearly visible. It is a relatively recently carefully restored and illuminated medieval fortress at night.

The village itself is a semi-mountainous settlement with mainly stone houses, both folk and mansions.

The area is of great natural beauty, especially in spring with the wild flowering koutsoupies (Cercis siliquastrum) or Judas tree and, I think, has been rightly described as "the little Tuscany" of Greece.

Happy Easter everyone!
