Liège_Le domaine de la Chartreuse et son fort
Le Fort de La Chartreuse à Liège fut construit entre 1817 et 1823 par le Royaume Uni des Pays-Bas afin de se protéger contre la France. A cause des progrès rapides de l'artillerie, le fort ne pouvait bientôt plus garantir la protection de la cité. Pour remédier à ce problème, Liège fut alors protégé par une ceinture (plus éloignée) de douze forts supplémentaires.
En 1830 le fort est capturé par les liégeois lors de l'insurrection.pris par des troupes belges. Au 19e siècle le fort fut modernisé. Ensuite, le fort était utilisé comme simple casernement.
Après la prise de Liège par les Allemands en août 1914, le fort servait comme camp de prisonniers. Entre 1918 et 1940, la caserne fut agrandie et hébergait occasionnellement plus de 2000 hommes. Le Fort pouvait, en tout, héberger 3000 hommes. Durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, las Allemands utilisaient le fort en tant que casernement. Ensuite, entre septembre 1944 et juillet 1945, les Américains ont transormé le Fort de La Chartreuse en hôpital pour soigner les blessés de la campagne des Ardennes. Après la guerre, le fort retomba aux mains de l'armée belge.

Un autre point intéressant sont les fresques peintes dans les casemates par les militaires au début du siècle. Elles retracent la vie quotidienne du "plouc" comme on appelait ces soldats d'infanterie. Le site est vraiment immense et s'étale sur 30 hectares.

9 January 2008 - these pictograms were a line on the noticeboard at the Ashhurst Domain in the Manawatu. I expected the camera to focus on the picture, not its reflection.
