Day 18 - Wine tasting today, started at Hess with their nice wines and then toured through the art galleries in the building. After that we drove across town and headed up the valley on the Silverado Trail, a fantastic drive weaving in and out of the wineries with the Redwood forests in the background. Then turned off the road and went to Stirling Vinyards, where you take a cable car up to the top of the hill where the Winery is! A Fantastic experience, there is not one tasting room, instead there is a self guided tour through the winery, and as you go along there is different bars with a wine each, so you taste as you tour the Winery. Caught up with friends and finally finished with a Guided tour of Domain Carneros(by Taittinger) which we enjoyed throughly, tasted 7 different Sparkling wines, plus a Merlot and a Pinot, and the tour guide was great, very knowledgeable. Learnt a lot of new things about wine and the process, and the history of Champagne.

Mt. Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano. It sits atop the Hawaii Hotspot in the central Pacific Ocean and had a decades-long eruption from 1983 to 2018. Eruptive activity started up again in December 2020 and continued into 2026. Kilauea lavas are basaltic in composition, but the physical appearance of Kilauea’s output varies. Many of Kilauea’s eruptions occurred along its East Rift Zone, a fracture system extending ~eastward from the summit vent area. Seen here is lava erupting at the summit of Kilauea Volcano at 10:07 AM, local time, on 10 March 2026. This is the high fountaining phase of "episode 43", which occurred from the mid-morning to the early evening of 10 March 2026. "Episode 1" of the current eruption series started on 23 December 2024.

------------------------------------------------

Info. from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) & United States Geological Survey (USGS):

Episode 43 of the ongoing Halemaumau eruption at the Kilauea summit began around 9:17 AM Hawaii Standard Time on March 10, 2026, and is continuing at this time. Initial fountains began from the north vent with the south vent starting just before 10 AM Hawaii Standard Time. Currently the south fountain is 1150 feet (350 meters) high and the north vent is 1000 feet (300 meters) high. Maximum fountain heights for both vents were over 1300 feet (400 meters). Lava flows are have covered about one third of the floor of Halemaumau Crater. Precursory overflows began from the north vent at 8:20 AM Hawaii Standard Time and continued directly into the fountaining episode. Tephra fallout, visible in Hawaiian Volcano Observatory webcams from as early as 9:50 AM Hawaii Standard Time, is creating hazardous conditions in areas downwind, including neighboring communities and Highway 11. Volcano Village and Mauna Loa Estates - [falling tephra] up to 3 inches in diameter. Royal Hawaiian Estates - [falling tephra up to a] half an inch in diameter and Pele's hair. Fallout that nearly continuously covers the ground has been reported at various overlooks in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Golf Course. The National Weather Service has issued an ashfall warning. Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency announced the closure of Highway 11 between the 24 and 40 mile markers due to dangerous conditions being created by tephra falling. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has announced that temporary closures around the Kilauea summit are in place due to volcanic hazards. Lodging guests of Volcano House and Kilauea Military Camp will be allowed to enter the park. Lava fountains from the south vent are currently reaching 1310 feet, while the north vent lava fountains are a little under 985 feet high. The National Weather Service reports the plume [is] currently reaching 30,000 feet above sea level. Winds from the south are currently pushing the plume to the north.

--------------------------------

Episode 43 of lava fountaining in Halemaumau began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 9:17 AM Hawaii Standard Time on March 10 and continues as of this notice.

The National Weather Service reports that the plume from this eruption is reached over 10,000 to 15,000 feet above sea level. Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicate that winds are light and variable with winds about the inversion level (8,000 to10,000 feet) light from the southwest, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and sparse volcanic material may be distributed to the northeast direction from Halemaumau. Currently only Peleʻs hair and fine ash are falling in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and adjacent communities with rare pumice less than 0.5 inches.

--------------------------------

Episode 43 of the ongoing Halemaumau eruption ended abruptly at 6:21 PM Hawaii Standard Time on March 10, 2026 after 9 hours of continuous lava fountaining.

--------------------------------

8:26 AM Hawaii Standard Time:

North vent began vigorous overflows at 8:17 AM Hawaii Standard Time that continue at this time.

--------------------------------

9:39 AM Hawaii Standard Time:

Episode 43 began at 9:17 AM Hawaii Standard Time this morning when tremor doubled and tilt accelerated downward. Light and variable winds at the summit may cause tephra to fall all around the summit region and into communities to the north and east of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

--------------------------------

9:59 AM Hawaii Standard Time:

North vent fountains are just over 300 feet (100 meters) high. Plume is rising vertically, some falling tephra observed near V1 camera north of the vents. South vent began overflowing just before 10 AM Hawaii Standard Time.

--------------------------------

10:42 AM Hawaii Standard Time:

Both north and south vents are above 1000 feet high and producing voluminous tephra spreading to the north. Golf course housing and Highway 11 are being hit with tephra up to 5 inches. Plume is over 25,000 feet above sea level and spreading north.

--------------------------------

11:45 AM Hawaii Standard Time:

Both the south and north vents are currently about 1300 feet (400 meters) high. Small tephra up to 1-2 inches are falling in Volcano Village. Light fall of tephra is also reported from Royal Hawaiian Estates at the 24 mile marker on Highway 11.

--------------------------------

2:08 PM Hawaii Standard Time:

South fountain has decreased to around 1000 feet (300 meters) high and north fountain is 700 feet (200 meters) high. Tephra fall to the north and east has greatly reduced in the past hour. Fine ash and hair falling as far as Hilo and Hawaiian Paradise Park.

--------------------------------

5:19 PM Hawaii Standard Time:

The south fountain is about 700 feet (220 meters) high with the north around 600 feet (180 meters) high. Tephra fall is greatly reduced but still falling in communities near the park with finer ash reported as far away as Hilo.

--------------------------------

5:56 PM Hawaii Standard Time:

Fountain heights for both north and south vents are at or just under 600 feet. Only sparse small pumices (less than 1 inch) are falling in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and surrounding communities. Fine ash and Peleʻs hair continue to fall.

--------------------------------

6:15 PM Hawaii Standard Time:

Fountains remain at or just below 600 feet high. Due to drop in tephra fall, the United States Geological Survey has lowered the alert level from "RED / WARNING" to "ORANGE/WATCH". Summit deflation continues and is now over 32 microradians.

--------------------------------

6:25 PM Hawaii Standard Time:

South fountain dropping and began jetting around 6:18 PM and disappeared at 6:21 PM along with north vent. Ash plume lingering around 10,000 feet and still drifting to north. Only very sparse ash in Hilo at 6 PM Hawaii Standard Time and expected to stop.

--------------------------------

Locality: Halemaumau Crater, southwestern corner of Kilauea Crater (Kilauea Caldera), southeastern Hawaii, central Pacific Basin
