Colfax, Louisiana.

The term “Dixie” originally referred to privately-issued currency from banks in early Louisiana. These banks issued ten dollar notes that were labeled “Dix”, the French for ten, on the reverse side. English-speaking Southerners called the notes “Dixies” and named New Orleans and the surrounding Cajun-speaking areas of Louisiana “Dixieland”. "Dixie" eventually became a popular reference for all of Louisiana, likely because it was the only state under Napoleonic law.

With the Civil War, Americans began using various descriptors to group the southern states together under one unbrella term. "Dixie" rose to the top in popularity, perhaps due to its foreign origin and the associated connotations. As a geographic location, “Dixie” thereon referenced the 11 states whose secession formed the Confederate States of America. In order these states include: South Carolina; Mississippi; Florida; Alabama; Georgia; Louisiana; Texas; Virginia; Arkansas; North Carolina; and lastly Tennessee.

With the exception of Louisiana, which incidentally remains under Napoleonic law, most people today recognize "Dixie" as only a term for the confederate states. For many Southerners, "Dixie" consequently remains a traditional and emotional word for the early or Old South and many consider it a legitimate part of Southern heritage. Conversely, others regard the term "Dixie" as strifeful, offensive, or racist. [SOURCE: Wikipedia and storytelling by the old folks]

Whilst the DL class locomotives dominate the Bay of Plenty main line these days, Kiwi Rail's older DF and DX class stalwarts make the occasional welcomed appearance. Such was the case on this day when a General Electric DX "Dixie" was in sole charge of a Port of Tauranga-Auckland Metro Port container service. It is seen crossing the former marshland area between Motamuoho and Eureka as it heads towards Hamilton.
