Notes: Léon Gambetta, (born April 2, 1838, Cahors, France—died Dec. 31, 1882, Ville-d’Avray, near Paris), French republican statesman who helped direct the defense of France during the Franco-German War of 1870–71. In helping to found the Third Republic, he made three essential contributions: first, by his speeches and articles, he converted many Frenchmen to the ideals of moderate democratic republicanism. Second, by his political influence and personal social contacts, he gathered support for an elective democratic political party, the Republican Union. Finally, by backing Adolphe Thiers, who was elected provisional head of government by the National Assembly of 1871, against royalists and Bonapartists, he helped transform the new regime into a parliamentary republic. Gambetta was briefly premier of France from Nov. 14, 1881, to Jan. 16, 1882. Gambetta lost his right eye in a childhood accident which is why he is always photographed in profile.
Étienne Carjat (28 March 1828 in Fareins, Ain – 19 March 1906 in Paris), was a French journalist, caricaturist and photographer. He co-founded the magazine Le Diogène, and founded the review Le Boulevard. He is best known for his numerous portraits and caricatures of political, literary and artistic Parisian figures. His best-known work is the iconic portrait of Arthur Rimbaud which he took in October 1871. The location of much of his photography is untraceable after being sold to a Mr. Roth in 1923.

Hungarian Maria Corda (1898-1975) was an immensely popular star of the silent cinema of Austria and Germany. The pretty, blonde actress was a queen of the popular epic spectacles of the 1920s, which were often directed by her husband, Alexander Korda.
María Corda (sometimes spelt as Korda) was born María Antónia Farkas in Déva, Hungary in 1898. She began her acting career in the theatres of Budapest in the early days of World War I. Soon after Hungary became an independent state she began to work in the film industry as well. As Antónia Farkas she made her first film appearance in Se ki, se be/Not In, or Out (Sándor Korda aka Alexander Korda, 1919). In 1919 she married her director, but she would always write her last name differently to differentiate herself from her husband. He featured her in Fehér rózsa/The White Rose (Alexander Korda, 1919), Ave Caesar! (Alexander Korda, 1919) and A 111-es/Number 111 (Alexander Korda, 1919). She followed Korda when he journeyed to Vienna to join the Sascha Film Company. There Korda made her a star of the European silent cinema. Under his guidance, she took part in epic films like Samson und Delila/Samson and Delilah (Alexander Korda, 1922) and Die Sklavenkönigin/The Slave Queen (Mihály Kertész aka Michael Curtiz, 1924). Set in ancient Egypt, Die Sklavenkönigin recounts the oppression of the Jews under the despotic rule of Pharaoh Menapta. Against this backdrop is played the romantic story of Hebrew girl Merapi (Maria), the ‘Moon of Israel’, and Prince Seti (Adelqui Migliar aka Adelqui Millar), heir to the Egyptian throne. Die Sklavenkönigin was intended for an American release that same year, under the title Moon of Israel. That release was suppressed by Cecil B. DeMille, who worried that his own The Ten Commandments would be compared unfavourably. In 1927 Moon of Israel finally arrived in the American cinemas, director Michael Curtiz had been hired by Warner Bros., largely on the strength of this one film.
In the mid-1920s, Maria Corda had become a darling of the public and a sure guarantee for success at the box office. To her hits belong Das unbekannte Morgen/The Unknown Tomorrow (Alexander Korda, 1923) with Werner Krauss, Jedermanns Frau/Everybody's Woman (Alexander Korda, 1924), and Madame wünscht keine Kinder/Madame Doesn't Want Children (Alexander Korda, 1926) with Harry Liedtke. Her popularity was so huge that Austrian investors refused their grant for the Italian film Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei/The Last Days of Pompeii (Carmine Gallone, Amleto Palermi, 1926) unless the leading part would be recast with Maria Corda. And of course, that’s what finally happened. Desperately seeking his independence, Alexander Korda moved to Berlin to form his own company Korda-Film, and Maria moved with him to the German capital. There Korda directed his wife in Eine DuBarry Von Heute/A Modern DuBarry (Alexander Korda, 1926). Corda played Toinette, a saucy, somewhat amoral scullery maid. Bouncing from bed to bed, Toinette becomes the mistress of Count Martel (Alfred Gerasch) and, ultimately, the King of Andalia (Jean Bradin). This final liaison very nearly topples the Andalian government, but Toinette manages to survive this ordeal without a hair out of place, though she does cry and cry a lot when things don't go her way. This film landed Korda his Hollywood contract, and he and Maria travelled to the US.
Maria Corda’s one truly successful Hollywood film performance was in The Private Life of Helen of Troy (Alexander Korda, 1927). Setting the standard for his later light-hearted biopics The Private Life of Henry VIII and Rembrandt, Korda steadfastly refused to take any of The Private Life of Helen of Troy seriously.
Maria Corda played the title character as a fetchingly underdressed coquette, oblivious to all the political turmoil she's causing when she allows the handsome Paris (Ricardo Cortez) to kidnap her. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1928, the year of the Awards' inception, in the category of Best Title Writing. Other Hollywood productions with Corda like the early sound film Love and the Devil (Alexander Korda, 1929) enjoyed little success. She finished her Hollywood career when the sound came to stay because her English was limited. She returned to Europe where she appeared in the silent comedies Der moderne Casanova/A Modern Casanova (Max Obal, 1928) and Die Konkurrenz platzt/The Competition Bursts (Max Obal, Rudolf Walther-Fein, 1929), both opposite Harry Liedtke. In Germany, she made one more sound film: Rund um die Liebe/All Around Love (Oskar Kalbus, 1929) with Elisabeth Bergner. In 1930 Maria Corda divorced Alexander Korda and she would never make another film. She moved to New York where she wrote novels. The formerly celebrated film goddess fell into oblivion. The later years of her life were spent in the vicinity of Geneva, Switzerland. Maria Corda died there in Thônex in 1976. She was 77.

Metering the scene with a Weston Master II light meter, I rated the paper at 5 ISO, based on Ilford's suggestion of 4-6 ISO. Using the smallest aperture, f32, I exposed the paper for 50 seconds. The paper may benefit from 'flashing' before exposure to reduce contrast.

2010 marked the fifth anniversary of the London Korean Film Festival.

This year's festival included over 20 films as well as Short Films and Animation. Following recent traditions, the festival also toured the UK, this year visiting, Cardiff, Belfast and Cambridge.
The Festival was visited by some of Korea's leading Director's including, Lee Jeong-boom, Kim Jee-woon, Jang Jin and Im Sang-soo who each gave talks and lectures on their films and work.
The 2010 LKFF included a Jang Jin Retrospective, a spotlight on women, war, thriller, action and drama and mise-en-scene.
The London Korean Film Festival is organised by The Korean Cultural Centre UK, with the very generous support of the Korean Film Council, the Korean Film Archive, KOCCA and Asiana Airlines.
Durante su visita a Providencia, el presidente Iván Duque y el ministro de Ambiente Carlos Correa anunciaron diferentes iniciativas en el marco de la Operación Cangrejo Negro para la restauración ecológica de las islas luego del paso del huracán Iota.
El Primer mandatario, el Ministro Correa, la Directora del Instituto Sinchi Luz Marina Mantilla y el Director de la Corporación Coralina Arne Britton inauguraron el primero de cuatro viveros para la recuperación de la vegetación en Providencia y Santa Catalina. Este vivero fue construido desde diciembre con el apoyo del Ejército Nacional, la Corporación Coralina y Conservación Internacional, bajo el liderazgo del Sinchi.
Al respecto, el Presidente Duque aseguró que “el trabajo que debemos realizar como Sistema Nacional Ambiental es garantizar el recubrimiento integral de la flora ecosistémica de la isla. Hoy vimos el primer megavivero público de nuestro país, que nos permitirá tener las plántulas y la preparación de flora para que luego se siembre a lo largo y ancho de Providencia y Santa Catalina”.
En este espacio se espera la producción de hasta 10.000 plántulas y se iniciará su siembra en época de lluvias para facilitar la supervivencia de los árboles sembrados.
21 expedicionarios se tomarán Providencia
El Gobierno lanzó la Expedición Cangrejo Negro que tendrá lugar en Providencia del 18 al 23 de enero para generar conocimiento y planear estrategias de rehabilitación de las especies de flora y fauna en la isla.
La Expedición contará con la participación de 21 expertos de diferentes disciplinas de entidades del Sistema Nacional Ambiental (Instituto Humboldt, Instituto Sinchi, Invemar, Ideam, Coralina y Parques Nacionales Naturales), profesionales raizales y auxiliares de campo.
"La reconstrucción debe ser segura, armoniosa y debe buscar la protección natural, esto se logra a través de la protección coralina ecosistémica de la isla. Por eso, hoy también estamos marcando un hito con la Expedición Cangrejo Negro, orientada a hacer el mejor levantamiento de información posible sobre la afectación producida por el huracán Iota”, dijo el mandatario.
Asimismo, el Presidente añadió que “queremos que esta expedición lleve a involucrar a más personas de la comunidad en la protección de la riqueza natural como ya lo estamos haciendo bajo el esquema de Pagos por Servicios Ambientales a los ciudadanos del Archipiélago”.
Por su parte, el Ministro Carlos Correa manifestó que en el marco de la Operación que inició hace 60 días en la isla, el lanzamiento de la Expedición Cangrejo Negro muestra la importancia del trabajo científico, su rigor y cómo se va a llevar este conocimiento a la realidad para recuperar las playas, el bosque seco y el patrimonio natural de Providencia.
“Desde que llegamos a la isla hemos venido desarrollando una serie de acciones en la Operación Cangrejo Negro: con el uso de máquinas chipeadoras para la construcción de biomasa, la inauguración del primer megavivero (vienen cuatro viveros más con el apoyo del Ejército Nacional), la ejecución del Programa de Pagos por Servicios Ambientales, porque es con la misma comunidad que vamos a recuperar estos ecosistemas”, mencionó Correa.
Esta investigación permitirá encontrar rutas de solución para identificar especies de uso, especies problema, especies ancestrales de fauna y flora, entre otros, y desarrollar los lineamientos para su recuperación y manejo.
En el corto plazo, la Expedición contribuirá a:
- Producir vegetales de utilidad para las comunidades locales que puedan ser propagados de manera rápida por ellas mismas a fin de atender sus necesidades de alimentación y garantizar el rescate de las especies de uso tradicional y, más allá, su seguridad alimentaria.
- Generar lineamientos para las acciones de rehabilitación de la isla en los ecosistemas naturales: manglares, bosque seco, playas y fauna en general.
- Crear una estrategia conjunta de rehabilitación de la isla de la mano de la comunidad raizal.
- Evaluar, con énfasis en las especies endémicas de la isla, todos los grupos existentes (en este caso, aves y ranas).
A mediano plazo, los resultados de la expedición servirán para direccionar los esfuerzos de este primer año de trabajo de todas las instituciones para hacer de Providencia una isla sostenible basada en sus recursos biológicos y con una economía sustentada en su naturaleza.
Siembra de vida
Durante la jornada, el presidente de la República, el ministro de Ambiente, los directivos del Sistema Nacional Ambiental y la comunidad sembraron los primeros árboles de mangle para la recuperación del bosque seco tropical y la reforestación de Providencia, en la Playa Manzanillo.
Las especies sembradas de mangle rojo, negro y blanco son nativas y fueron recolectadas en la misma isla al ser las primeras del proceso de rescate y propagación del vivero.
Medición de playas
De igual manera, en la isla, se está llevando a cabo el monitoreo de erosión costera y estado de la playa en pro de su recuperación para la bioeconomía, a través de la medición de playas liderada por el Invemar.
Con apoyo de la comunidad beneficiaria del programa de Pagos por Servicios Ambientales se desarrollarán jornadas de limpieza de residuos orgánicos y la evaluación de las condiciones actuales de las zonas de manglar para el diseño del plan de restauración de Santa Isabel, Santa Catalina y el Parque Old Providence.
También, los investigadores realizarán capacitación al personal local sobre restauración y limpieza de residuos sólidos en manglares, con el fin de mejorar las condiciones del ecosistema y promover su recuperación.
El primer mandatario afirmó que la reconstrucción también nos va a traer un reto importante en lo ambiental: hacer de Providencia el municipio cero emisiones de Colombia, a través de la reforestación, la protección del mangle y el patrimonio natural, la transición energética en el parque vehicular, una granja solar y el manejo de residuos sólidos.
“Este encuentro hoy marca un hito en la recuperación ambiental y sostenible de Providencia, por eso aquí está todo el Sistema Nacional Ambiental unido en este propósito, esto marca la pauta para trabajar en otros retos ambientales que tenemos”, puntualizó el Presidente. / Ene. 17, 2021. As directed by His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka, Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Government of Sri Lanka handed over a stock of 18,000 kg of dry rations, as emergency relief goods, to the Government of Pakistan today, 8 August 2010, at 4.00 p.m., at the Chaklala Air Base, Islamabad.
On behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Pakistan, Air Chief Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody handed over the above reliefs to Mr Naimat-Ullah, Additional Secretary and Coordinator for the flood relief operations of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
During the handing over, the Additional Secretary mentioned that Sri Lanka had been a very special country for Pakistan and their relationship had always been exceptionally good, and both countries have been there for each other in the hour of need.
He profusely thanked the Government of Sri Lanka for the kind gesture at this needy hour.
The Director of South Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Dr Muhammad Tariq, Mr M H M N Bandara, Minister Counsellor and Defence Adviser, Group Captain Sampath Thuyacontha of the High Commission of Sri Lanka also participated at this event.
The Flood Relief contribution was coordinated by the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Habitat: Young riparian forest, Picea abies and Salix eleagnos dominant trees, next to a river; flat terrain occasionally flooded during high water levels of the river, calcareous, young alluvial ground; in shade, humid ground and air; partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 530 m (1.740 feet), alpine phytogeographical region.
Substratum: fallen trunk of an old Salix eleagnos mostly not in direct contact with ground, still in bark, moss covered, in the late disintegration phase.
Place: Lower Trenta valley, right bank of river Soča, between villages Soča and Trenta, next to the farm house Otokar, Trenta 4, East Julian Alps, Posočje, Slovenia EC
Comments: According to its species name Polyporus ciliatus should have distinctly fringed edge of the pileus. However, this was barely so with this find. Apparently this trait is not very reliable. However, very small pores, barely seen by naked eye (6 pores/mm measured) and appearance in spring clearly distinct it from very similar Polyporus brumalis.
About 50 pilei found on two places. Growing solitary and in groups, occasionally two fruitbodies confluent at the base of the stipe; pilei diameter from 35 to 70 mm, pore layer thin, up to 3 mm; stipe 3 - 5 cm long, 4 - 6 mm in diameter, equal and somewhat thicker at the base; pilei surprisingly sturdy, quite hard to cut and chew; smell mild, pleasant, mushroomy; taste distinct, mushroomy, somewhat unpleasant; SP abundant, whitish-light beige, oac851.
Spores smooth. Dimensions: 5,4 [6 ; 6,2] 6,8 x 1,8 [2,1 ; 2,2] 2,5 microns; Q = 2,4 [2,8 ; 2,9] 3,3; N = 30; C = 95%; Me = 6,1 x 2,1 microns; Qe = 2,9. Olympus CH20, NEA 100x/1.25, magnification 1.000 x, oil, in water, fresh material. AmScope MA500 digital camera.
