This church presented us with some difficulties in getting to. We got into the line of cars going into the Holkham Hall car park, told the ticket collector that we were looking for the church and he sent us on a four mile round trip of the park, back out onto a minor road, up the main coast road and into the park by a minor gated entrance to arrive at the N side of the church, hoorah! He did not think the church was open, but thankfully it was, a most entertaining Victorian conceit as well. The church stands upon a grassy knoll that is apparently mainly sand, once to coast extended to here and this is thought to be a large sand dune from that time. The church is a Victorian one, built on Saxon and Norman foundations, dedicated to St Withburga, a daughter of the Christian king of the East Angles who died fighting Penda of Mercia in 654. It was built by James K Collings in the late 1860’s, for the 2nd Earl of Leicester, at a cost of £9,000. It is in the ‘pure’ decorated style, apart from the SW tower/porch which is more EE. There are some monuments from the earlier churches on the site, but what you see is a mostly Collings work.

The Choquequirao Trek is one of the most difficult routes in Cusco - Peru, because of its verticality. Crossing the deep Canyon of Apurimac becomes a big challenge for those people who enjoy trekking. However, the difficulty of this trail is offset by the beauty of the landscape and the archeological Inca site of Choquequirao.

The difficulty with these is drilling the hole. The scallops have the hole as part of the mould, but for these the hole is too small, or rather the material surrounding the hole is too fine to rely on the pewter flowing round the internal obstruction and accurately reproducing the hole - the more likely outcome is that the whole top of the leg where the hole is would be missing. So after casting and cleaning I need to carefully drill each individual cast, clean up around the drill hole with a tiny file, then they all go into the polisher for an hour of shining up.
