Investigating introductory student difficulties reading equipotential diagrams

Rebecca Rosenblatt, Raymond Zich, Amber Sammons, Jacob Cermak

Illinois State University

In this study, we investigated student difficulties reading standard equipotential diagrams and the effect a visual modification to these diagrams had on students’ ability to correctly interpret these diagrams. Equipotential diagrams are often drawn with a uniform color and thickness to each equipotential line. We modified these diagrams based on theories of visual attention and grounded cognition to use color variation and line thickness to indicate the sign and amount of the potential. Students were randomly assigned to the traditional or modified diagrams and asked to compare electric potentials for indicated points on given diagrams. Results show that these modified diagrams did not affect students' overall response correctness. This, and other findings, clarify the specific issues students have reading equipotential diagrams which is mainly a misconception that charge sign does not affect the electric potential and a distance only rule can be used to find electric potential.

I was having difficulty seeing this bird to focus and Zoom in on, when the inevitable happened, someone started to walk up the path behind me and did not have the courtesy to wait for the few seconds that I needed. He walked straight passed me, proceeded by his dog of course. As he passed I just took a blind shot and managed this. I now wish that there was nothing there because I now have that tantalising "Might have Been".

This could so easily have been one of my best evers, the light was right, the soft background of the reeds was right, and I was close. I can zoom to 676mm, so I could have composed this shot as I wanted.

Even worse I think it was a juvenile Bearded Tit. Have a look and see what you think. I've left the Original size up so that you can have a closer look.

I'll be broken hearted for days.

👩‍🏫 "Light on Life’s Difficulties" by James Allen is a self-improvement book that explores how to overcome life’s challenges through positive thinking, mental discipline, and self-mastery. Allen emphasizes that difficulties are opportunities for growth and that our attitude toward challenges determines our success and happiness. He highlights the importance of personal responsibility, inner wisdom, and living in harmony with universal laws. Through deep and inspiring reflections, the author encourages readers to cultivate resilience, self-control, and a higher understanding of life’s purpose.

When a man enters a dark room he is not sure of his movements, he cannot see objects around him, or properly locate them, and is liable to hurt himself by coming into sudden contact with them. But let a light be introduced, and immediately all confusion disappears. Every object is seen, and there is no danger of being hurt. To the majority, life is such a dark room, and their frequent hurts their disappointments, perplexities, sorrows and pains are caused by sudden contact with principles which they do not see, and are therefore not prepared to deal with. But when the light of wisdom is introduced into the darkened understanding, confusion vanishes, difficulties are dissolved, all things are seen in their true place and proportion, and henceforth the man walks open-eyed and unhurt, in the clear light of wise comprehension. - Summary by James Allen

This was the last guy of the last level on intermediate difficulty. The cool thing about this strategy was that I could "juggle" the walkers by removing that last machine gun, (the one next to the door,) and putting up another one on the other side just before they got there. Then they'd have to walk all the way back. I only had to do that on a few levels tho.

The economic and financial difficulties of Europe are well known. Big deficits and public debts in some of its member states, and a consequent need of fiscal austerity in a situation of slow growth and recession, might potentially contribute to the deterioration of the overall economic situation. While some European countries are going to face further difficulties, on average European Union member states have better deficits and public debts than the United States. Difficulty probably 0.5, particularly if you look at the other pictures in the stream.

Acts 27:6-7a (ANIV)

6 There [in Myra in Lycia] the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board. 7a We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus... [When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.]

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Unspecified in Bible narrative. I’ve set this scene in the afternoon.

LIGHTING NOTES:

The sun (unseen, high in the sky on the left (West)) illuminates the scene, casting vague shadows below and to the right of objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

On the deck of the ship are two sailors (oarsmen) in long brown robes, steering the ship. Further towards the bow (front) of the ship are three small figures of the apostle Paul, his Roman soldier guard, and an un-named woman passenger, by the railings, below the mustard yellow sail.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The ship in verse 6 is described as an Alexandrian ship. If the author of Acts meant a ship constructed at Alexandria, then the ship would be of Egyptian design, probably crewed by Egyptian sailors. Whilst most Bible versions use the same term (an Alexandrian ship), both the NLT and Message Bible versions translate it as “an Egyptian ship”. It seems reasonable to assume an Egyptian ship is meant, so that is what I have drawn in my scenes.

Note: Acts 27:16 informs us that the ship had a lifeboat, which I assume was towed behind the ship. That is the small boat seen in my picture, behind the ship.

The ship in this picture is leaving the seaport of Myna in Lycia, which was a distinct region in southwest Anatolia, spanning the coast of Turkey. It was part of the Roman Empire, known for its rugged coastline and historical significance. The name Lycia can be interpreted as "wolf" due to its connection to the Greek word lukos, which means "wolf".

Where was Alexandria?

The ship the centurion found for him and the pirioners in his charge to voyage to Rome, in Italy, originated from the city port of Alexandria, which was in Egypt. That port was founded by, and named after, Alexander the Great, in 331B.C. Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The port remained the capital of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1000 years until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641 A.D.

Acts 27:38 informs us that the ship was laden with grain Greek, sîtos, most probably wheat. It is well known that great quantities of wheat were imported from Egypt to feed Rome; and it’s likely that this ship was one of the large vessels employed for that purpose.

Since the ship was bound for Italy (most probably Rome), it suited the centurion to put Paul and his other prisoners onboard.

“The ships of the Alexandrians are mentioned several times in the Mishnah as used by Jews (Kelim, xv. 1; Ohalot, viii. 1, 3). They are described as containing large receptacles for drinking-water for long voyages. These vessels carried grain from Egypt to Rome; such a ship, "Isis," is described by Lucian ("De Navigatione," 1-14). It was a three-masted vessel, 180 feet long, more than 45 feet beam, and 44 feet depth of hold. Mention is often made in Greek and in Roman literature of the large Alexandrian Ships engaged in the grain-trade (see references in "Novum Testamentum Græcum," ed. Wetstein, 1752, ii. 638 on Acts, xxvii. 6; Marquardt, "Das Privatleben der Römer," 1882, ii. 388-399).”

A note about Myna.

“Myra, one of the most important towns of ancient Lycia, located near the mouth of the Andriacus River on the Mediterranean Sea in southwest Turkey. Its early history is unknown. St. Paul is known to have visited the city, and in the 4th century St. Nicholas was its bishop. The Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius II made Myra the capital of Byzantine Lycia until the city fell to the caliph Harun al-Rashid in 808 A.D. The western scarp of its acropolis, dating from the 5th to the 3rd century B.C., was sculptured into a large number of rock-cut sepulchres, imitating wooden houses and shrines, with pillared facades and reliefs. At the foot of the acropolis are the remains of a magnificent theatre, one of the largest and finest in Anatolia.”

Go past the Punta dels Cinc Sous, Cala del Salpatx and Les Penyes until you get to Port de la Clota.

Then cross over the port by Carrer Romeu de Corbera, until you come to Riells Beach. At the beach, walk along Passeig del Petit Príncep until you get to Passeig del Mar, which takes you, following the coast, to the old centre of L'Escala. Carry along Passeig Lluís Albert and Port d'en Perris to La Platja. From La Platja (the main town beach) take Carrer Cargol and then Ronda Mar d'en Manassa, on your left, following the coastline. Go past La Creu small bay where you will see the fishermen's huts. This coastal path takes you to the place known as L’Oberta, from where you can see the beaches of Empúries. Walk along the Ronda del Pedró for about 200 metres and when you get to the Lampadòfor (the lamp bearer, the sculpture built to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic flame) turn right to take the Empúries Promenade.

The Empúries Promenade is two and a half kilometres long and runs parallel to the beaches of Empúries. It takes you past the Platja del Rec, Platja del Portitxol, Platja de les Muscleres and Platja del Moll Grec beaches, and you come to Sant Martí d'Empúries, which is the end of the route.

Go past the village of Sant Martí d'Empúries, heading south, taking the main road that leaves the village. From the same road, take the left at the first path you come to, and continue along this path towards Mas Sastruc. At the crossroads with Mas Sastruc, carry straight on and cross over the main road at its narrowest part. On the other side of the road, near the Tourist Information Office, take a path there is on the left that will take you to Les Corts farmhouses, signposted as "Camí de les Corts a Empúries", go between the farmhouses and turn left towards El Molí de L'Escala restaurant, until you come to Camp dels Pilans, in Carrer Muntanya Rodona. This will take you to a path that heads south, right at the edge of the houses. You will find a signpost that labels the path "Via Heraklea" and from here on, follow the livestock path which winds between the pine trees. You will come to the large pine tree known as Pi Gros, carry on towards the south until you reach the road to Bellcaire. Cross over this road and go into the car park of Els Recs farmhouses, from here go to the football pitch and take the path behind it heading south, until you get to Cortal Nou. From Cortal Nou, take the "Termes" Path heading east, go through the old sand quarry, following the green and white markers, cross over Carrer Punta Milà and following the perimeter of the campsites, you will get to the end of the route, Cala Montgó.

Others values:

The value of this route lies in the combination and variety of spaces and landscapes; on the one hand the route takes you along the coast, going past a large number of beaches and small bays and panoramic viewpoints. On the other hand, it takes you past farmhouses and along rural paths with great landscape and botanical interest.

The digital media and network media brings massive data to their audience by their high communicability and mobility. This is causing a phenomenon called "Data Crazy" which used in Sachin Kamdar's article. Sachin point out that while the social web is not only a distribution, but also good for measuring the performance of content, the publisher has to consider what exactly caused an article to go popular in the future. More importantly, the contemporary publishers have to think and inform their content really fast to satisfy the contemporary reads 's needs, because best-performing content on the network media typically has "a 24-hour window before traffic to the article falls significantly". This makes publisher's work incredibly hard, they have to collect, crunch and deliver data in a very short period of time.
