Every year our Rotary Club invites children from St. Dominics - special education centre for children with hearing difficulties - for a couple of hours out on the Bay. Watch the dolphins and have some fun and a saussage sizzle (and sweets...) to finish with. The kids had a great time with thanks to the members and friends that provided the boats.
** PICTURE TAKEN FROM INTERNET. Difficulty taking photo while on site due to inability to get close enough for clear photo (did not want to contract poison ivy). Could visualize pollinators with binoculars, camera zoom was not adequate enough to obtain clear photos.
One type of pollinator visited the plant- a honey bee. This matched my prediction of pollinators for the species, as I predicted that beetles and bees would be most likely to visit the poison ivy based on the plant characteristics.
The total pollinator per hour on a per flower basis for poison ivy at my site was 8. The national average for pollinators per hour is around 10- my results were slightly lower than this.

Yes- it is feasible that pollinators can serve as a proxy for other types of ecosystem variables, such as water air quality. By pollinating the plant (as well as, in the caseof the honey bee, producting nectar from the plant), it promotes plant reproduction and metabolism. Both of these processes require energy use, which can come in many forms, but most notably for plants the energy is derived from photosynthesis. Photosynthesis releasees oxygen to the atmosphere and improves air quality, thus improving the quality of life for all organisms around the plant while simultaneously providing energy for itself and improving the air.
The rails are pretty narrow and this one split on nailing so here I am re-gluing it. Later on, I bought a small drill bit for this purpose (because I seem to have lost my bit set in a move.)

The difficulty was getting your horse to charge a square bristling with bayonets. Not sure how many Cuirassiers managed to get this close. Another one of the Royal Mail's fantastic series of stamps marking Waterloo 200.

Several mistakes and difficulties with this one.
This was cropped; I did a poor job framing the original. I keep cutting people off at the ankles which is getting to be an annoying habit. Must un-habitualize that.
The light was wrong. I had to lighten the faces in the back and even then they look off because they were shaded. This is the rule of squares in action: The rear faces were too far away from the ligh source and weren't illuminated as well. They were maybe 2 stops lower than the foreground folks. Emma's face is the best, with the sun as a golden rim light. Nanny and Aunt Cathy in the front are slightly overlit and the background folk don't get the benefit of the side light or the flashes.
It was cold out. I tried to set up as much as possible ahead of time but it just wasn't going to be possible to set up everything (this is why the light was wrong). I wanted to get everyone back inside as quickly as possible (especially the Older Folk). This makes it hard to get everyone smiling and looking at the camera, not making faces, allowing for flash recharge times, etc.
Jane wants me to go over to their place to take family portraits for them. I'm terrifically excited.

2 Canon 430exii, both fired bare at 1/2 power. One at about 3 feet right, one at about 7 feet.

Space2face is Shetland’s restorative practice - an independent charity and confidential service. It uses restorative practices and the arts to support dialogue between those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for causing harm.
In partnership with justice social work in Shetland, Space2face has set up a new group called the Phenomenal Women’s Group – which takes its name from Maya Angelou’s poem ‘Phenomenal Woman’.
It was set up due to an increase in the number of women in contact with justice social work in Shetland and research evidence showing that taking part in creative arts activities can lead to a greater openness to restorative work and the potential for change.
The group meets weekly and takes inspiration from women artists and activists - making artwork and trying out new types of craft in response to their lives. This becomes a way of speaking about personal difficulties.
Members have described themselves as socially excluded and see the group as a safe, non-judgmental space that nurtures their mental health.
Many of the women are mothers and have come into the group through prior or current involvement with justice social work or as part of recovery.
When one has difficulty walking, a set of wheels is the next best thing! Walkies became "wheelies" for Muffy. Our dear little girl passed away three months later, aged nearly 15 years old.

A friend recently told me that his father had requested something special. He said that when he died, he wanted his body to be cremated, and his ashes cast on top of the water in his favorite trout stream.
My friend thought that was an attractive idea . . .until he realized that he would have to be the one to do it.
The time came and he took the ashes to Dad's greatest place of relaxation and solace. A fitting environment in which to remember him.
Releasing those ashes from his fingers, he said, was one of the most difficult things he's ever had to do.
