Shrewsbury, New Jersey: There’s no HP Sauce and no McVitie’s Digestive Tea Biscuits to dunk into my afternoon tea in the United States. This virus thing has turned my life topsy turvy and into a living hell! I’m actually having to dip Jacob’s Irish Rich Tea Biscuits from Ballymount, Dublin into my Yorkshire tea. I only pray that the Queen doesn’t find out.

The difficulty with this shot for me was that I don't have an SLR. My camera's delay (between pressing the shutter and recording the image) meant having to anticipate when the skater was at the right spot. Because of the great speed involved, I could really only cross my fingers that he'd appear in my frame at the right time.

I also was annoyed by the building being in the frame. I tried to position my camera farther out into the street, but this particular skater saw me and asked me to move the camera back onto the curb. So, I opted for another angle that gave me almost nothing but sky but created a tougher challenge with capturing him at the right moment.

The other angle...

Designed by Centaur Robotics Ltd

The Centaur is a self-balancing, two-wheeled personal electric vehicle for people who have difficulties getting around. It aims to increase independence, self-esteem and social connection by making supported mobility more flexible. Designed for the world we live in, the Centaur fits through standard-sized doorways and under tables and desks, powerfully increasing the freedom of those with mobility difficulties.

Design Age Institute is working with Centaur Robotics Ltd to enhance the way the Centaur communicates with those who use it. The Centaur aims to appeal to both existing wheelchair-users and those who have not considered using a mobility device before.

The Future of Ageing

(July – September 2022)

Curated by Design Age Institute in collaboration with the Design Museum, The Future of Ageing explores how design is transforming the way society can support everyone to age with greater agency and joy.

One thing we all have in common is that we are ageing, and many of us will live into old age. By 2040, more than a quarter of the UK's population will be aged over 60. We are moving towards a future in which the population of older adults will only continue to grow.

The Future of Ageing display celebrates how design can help us reimagine products, services and environments to enhance our experience of living in later life with a selection of prototypes, sketches and research from projects that are being developed by Design Age Institute and its partners.

Among them are 'The Centaur' – a self-balancing, two-wheeled personal electric vehicle for people with difficulties getting around, 'Gita' – a hands-free cargo-carrying robot, the 'Home Office to Age in Place' – created to integrate flexible living and working space for later life, and 'Hearing Birdsong' – a digital 'audioscape' app that uses the sound of birdsong to engage visitors with their hearing health.

The display also presents 'Growing Together' – a long-term participatory project that explores opportunities for an intergenerational garden at the Design Museum, and showcases stories and experiences of later life through two new film commissions as well as a limited edition publication from 'This Age Thing', a community of age advocates.

Tons of blue cars about.

Found my first Cuthona flavovulta at Greyhound Rock today, in the Pool o' Plenty (which wasn't as plentiful as it had been when I first visited it in January.) Unfortunately, I discovered that my ring flash wasn't working, and it was dark & cloudy out, so shooting micro-slugs was not going to really happen today. I got this shot during a brief burst of sunshine, and I'm happy enough with it to post it.

Bummer, but it was the first day of lows, and I had other things cutting my visit short today, so better to find the problems now than later.

Also checked out the Crevice O' Crazy Numbers again today, and while not as crazy as before, it was still full of more Triopha maculata than I could count, and a half dozen Phidiana hiltoni.

Technical difficulties didn't stop City Council Member Robert Jackson - he quickly climbed the pole and ripped off the paper covering the Count Basie Place sign. Definitely a man of action!

The mic in the Protoman helmet was being wonky, and they were trying to fix it on stage by wiggling the connecting wire. I'm serious.

With great difficulty I found transport back across the mountains, from Chacas to Carhuaz via this 16,000 ft pass that drops into the quebrada Ulta. It turned out that the whole route had major road construction underway so that buses could only travel at night (what a waste!) or on Sunday - I got the last seat on that one when someone failed to show up. But I was far from a window (they soon fogged up anyway) and the weather was bad so I saw very little of the route. When the driver finally needed a bathroom break near the top, I practically climbed over everyone to get a few moments outside... and this one photo.

Peanut is a parakeet that does a special trick. If you play an audio file of a parakeet chirping on an OLPC laptop, he will sing to you (smooth jazz on iTunes is another winning combination).

We learned this trick searching for Peanut the second day after we brought him home. He disappeared after being let loose from his cage, and my son. Nate. thought of playing bird calls to find him. So we downloaded bird calls from the Internet and found him, naturally, inside of his birdseed bag. Ain't the Internet grand?

(We entered him in our local 4th of July Pet Show to demonstrate his newfound talent, hence the video. He won 3rd place overall)

THis is the companion piece to STOP for the Technical Difficulties show. I think i've run out of steam for it now. Might have another crack at some other canvases this weekend but really i gotta replace the radiator on my car and its my birthday. So probably wont.

This is a route that goes all around the perimeter of the municipal area of L´Escala, with the exception of Cinclaus, going along the coastal strip and returning inland.

Technical Specifications

- Departure point: Cala Montgó

- Type of route: Round

- Distance: 18 km

- Time: 6 hours

- Difficulty: High (because of the distance involved)

To follow the route:

The route starts at Cala Montgó and from the beach itself you head towards L'Escala, along Carrer Trenca Braços, on the right, coinciding with the GR-92. Once at the top, in front of Illa Mateua Beach, in Carrer Punta Montgó, turn left to follow the sea, following the GR-92 markers. Go past the Punta dels Cinc Sous, Cala del Salpatx and Les Penyes until you get to Port de la Clota.

Then cross over the port by Carrer Romeu de Corbera, until you come to Riells Beach. At the beach, walk along Passeig del Petit Príncep until you get to Passeig del Mar, which takes you, following the coast, to the old centre of L'Escala. Carry along Passeig Lluís Albert and Port d'en Perris to La Platja. From La Platja (the main town beach) take Carrer Cargol and then Ronda Mar d'en Manassa, on your left, following the coastline. Go past La Creu small bay where you will see the fishermen's huts. This coastal path takes you to the place known as L’Oberta, from where you can see the beaches of Empúries. Walk along the Ronda del Pedró for about 200 metres and when you get to the Lampadòfor (the lamp bearer, the sculpture built to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic flame) turn right to take the Empúries Promenade.

The Empúries Promenade is two and a half kilometres long and runs parallel to the beaches of Empúries. It takes you past the Platja del Rec, Platja del Portitxol, Platja de les Muscleres and Platja del Moll Grec beaches, and you come to Sant Martí d'Empúries, which is the end of the route.

Go past the village of Sant Martí d'Empúries, heading south, taking the main road that leaves the village. From the same road, take the left at the first path you come to, and continue along this path towards Mas Sastruc. At the crossroads with Mas Sastruc, carry straight on and cross over the main road at its narrowest part. On the other side of the road, near the Tourist Information Office, take a path there is on the left that will take you to Les Corts farmhouses, signposted as "Camí de les Corts a Empúries", go between the farmhouses and turn left towards El Molí de L'Escala restaurant, until you come to Camp dels Pilans, in Carrer Muntanya Rodona. This will take you to a path that heads south, right at the edge of the houses. You will find a signpost that labels the path "Via Heraklea" and from here on, follow the livestock path which winds between the pine trees. You will come to the large pine tree known as Pi Gros, carry on towards the south until you reach the road to Bellcaire. Cross over this road and go into the car park of Els Recs farmhouses, from here go to the football pitch and take the path behind it heading south, until you get to Cortal Nou. From Cortal Nou, take the "Termes" Path heading east, go through the old sand quarry, following the green and white markers, cross over Carrer Punta Milà and following the perimeter of the campsites, you will get to the end of the route, Cala Montgó.

Others values:

The value of this route lies in the combination and variety of spaces and landscapes; on the one hand the route takes you along the coast, going past a large number of beaches and small bays and panoramic viewpoints. On the other hand, it takes you past farmhouses and along rural paths with great landscape and botanical interest.

Difficulty getting back in the boat is compounded by oncoming traffic.

couple the difficulty of capturing an action shot with a solid (dark) colored animal and you've the equation for a difficult picture. jack has this look of complete and utter success as he bounds onto the shore and every day i try and get it. today was the closest i've come.

Do you, or someone you love, have difficulty walking? If so, solutions in the past were to get a manual or electric wheelchair, power chair, or scooter. Don’t get me wrong, each of these products provide help for millions of Americans with mobility issues, but each one is limited in how it can be used. Power chairs are fine for getting around your home, but they are too heavy to take in the car. Scooters are more portable, but they are too big to fit through most doorways. What’s worse, if you are riding one in a crowded situation, like a mall, you can’t see where you are going and might hit someone. Manual wheelchairs are fine, that is, as long as you have someone handy that’s strong enough to push it around. Now, for the first time, there’s a product that solves all of these problems. It’s from Rascal, the nation’s mobility leader, and it’s called the WeGo.
