Chongqing, one of China's largest and most rapidly growing cities, has undergone intense urban development over the past few decades, transforming from a traditional industrial hub into a sprawling megacity. This development has been driven by rapid population growth, a booming economy, and significant infrastructure projects such as new highways, bridges, and skyscrapers. The city, located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, has expanded both horizontally and vertically, with towering high-rises and expansive residential complexes reshaping its skyline. This rapid urbanization has been supported by the Chinese government's "Go West" policy, which has incentivized the movement of industries and investments to the interior of the country. The expansion has led to the creation of vast urban areas, often with mixed-use developments, but also has resulted in overcrowding, as the population swells to over 30 million in its metropolitan area.

However, this urban boom has brought about serious environmental challenges, particularly with air pollution and traffic congestion. Chongqing is known for its high levels of smog, which is caused by a combination of industrial emissions, coal burning, and vehicle exhaust, compounded by its geographic location in a basin that traps air pollution. The city's rapid industrialization has also led to increased construction dust and waste, further contributing to the air quality issues. These environmental concerns are exacerbated by the city's dense population, with millions of people living in close quarters, particularly in the more economically developed districts. As a result, the combination of rapid urban growth, high population density, and environmental degradation has made Chongqing one of the most crowded and polluted cities in China, with air pollution levels often exceeding national safety standards, creating significant health and quality of life challenges for its residents.
