A concept drawing of the site of The ExtraCare Charitable Trust's proposed new Coventry development in the Earlsdon Park area of the city.

An overview of the works. On the left you can see the National Counties Building Society in the background - now a Wetherspoons pub. The cranes in the distance are for the development of the Ashley Centre. Picture taken in 1981. Now the site of TK Max.

Traverse City, Michigan used to be the home for the state mental hospital known as the Traverse City State Hospital. The facility was closed in 1989 and is now undergoing redevelopment as a recreation, retail and housing development known as Traverse City Commons. One of the building has been redone and it's quite interesting to walk through the lower level with business set up in little rooms which look in a way like former cells. The building above has not yet been renovated and still exhibits a certain Victorian creepiness. My processing of the shot was meant to convey that feeling as well. (The image looks a little too crunchy at smaller sizes)

"My name is Susan Kigula from Victoria women`s prison, in Uganda. My imprisonment has been a blessing in disguise because that’s where I studied and sat for my A level examinations and now I am studying for Diploma in Common Law with the University of London. I would like to extend my endless thanks to APP without which I wouldn’t have accessed the University of London Law Programme. On this International Women`s Day, I wish to appeal to all women organizations around the world to support women in prison especially those who still have plans to continue with their education like APP is doing."

'Shoreline Development' This series of photos is of the first part of the development to be nearing completion. Ultimately the complex will occupy the foreshore from here to Folkestone Harbour with similar blocks of apartments. They may be described as luxury - the website indicates that a 1 bedroom apartment will be on sale at nearly half a million £s. This does include parking space in the basement. Current locals have a Marmite attitude to the development.

Christopher Peterson, both with the 89th Sustainment Brigade, work on a VSAT during Combat Support Training Exercise 86-16-03 at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, in August 2016. The VSAT illustrates an unusual feature of SATCOM acquisition: Because satellite technology is constantly evolving and industry is continuously investigating new applications, few of the products and programs under Stein’s purview leave the developmental phase. While sustaining the current equipment, the VSAT team is already working on the requirements for the next tactical satellite terminal. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. John Russell, 86th Training Division)

GDF will feature keynote addresses by The Honorable Ander Crenshaw, U.S. Representative, R-FL; and Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Managing Director of the World Bank Group. Breakout panel discussions will foster dialogue on topics including private sector partnerships, capacity building and workforce development, innovative finance, the post-2015 global development agenda, Ebola recovery in West Africa, and the strategic role of development in overall U.S. foreign policy. GDF will feature over 40 speakers, including key stakeholders from U.S. government agencies, leading multilateral and non-governmental organizations, foreign governments, and the private sector.

With a significant reduction in extreme poverty and an increase in private financial flows to the developing world over the past two decades, the face of development is rapidly changing. Meeting today’s challenges calls for innovation and effective partnerships across sectors, with an emphasis on improving governance and leveraging the role of the private sector.

The 2015 Global Development Forum will be held on Thursday, April 23, from 8:00AM – 3:45PM at the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ headquarters.

Earlier this month, the European Commission (EC) held its tenth ‘European Development Days’ (EDD) forum at the Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The stated aim for this annual gathering is to, “bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.” Recognizing a connection between this goal and the United Nation’s (UN) 17 newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, also known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), the EC made the 2030 Agenda this year’s focus.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was invited to give the opening remarks and I was on hand with my press pass and camera to cover his address. He observed that the forum was “timely and influential,” and adding that, “[t]he UN counts on your ideas and your partnerships to build a better future for all humanity, for people, planet, peace, and prosperity.” Those four final ‘P’ words, along with ‘partnerships’ make up the 5 ‘areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet’ which the goals target.

Mr. Ban had been introduced by Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Vice-President of the European Commission. Someone I’ve had the chance to hear and photograph in the past. I was again left admiring her poise and grasp of the broad and ever challenging issues involved in foreign relations.

Following Mr. Ban’s address were reflections by world leaders and representatives from international organizations. Below are some of the people that I had the opportunity to hear and photograph. Also included are photos of interactive displays for participants, such as the virtual reality setup by the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC) which allowed participants to see the world through the eyes of a refugee. UNRIC is also an organization I have worked for in the past and still shoot events with from time to time.
