Standards utility model and rival for the Austin A30, Morris Minor. Launched in 1953 the Standard Eight and Ten were designed by Vic Hammond as an entirely new car. The Eight was only offered as a four door Saloon, powered by a new OHV engine of 803cc and an output of 26bhp, which was down on the outgoing side valve unit, but was increased in 1957 to 30bhp. Drive was delivered via a four speed gearbox, with synchromesh on the top three ratios, with an option of overdrive from March 1957.
The bodies were of unitary construction, with coil independant front suspension and hypoid rear. Early ones have minimal trim, sliding windows and internal access to the boot. Winding windows on the Deluxe from 1954, and the rest from May 1955. Better equipped Super from 1956 and the triple overdrive Gold Star from 1957
STARTER MOTOR, Bicester
This cars overall condition is explained by the Starter Motor legend on the front door. Starter Motor is a Bicester based charitable company, aimed at giving youngsters the neccessary skills to develope a carreer within the world of classic motoring. The mantra reads - The charity believes our old-car world provides a haven in the digital age, offering enjoyment, adventure and community. It's a place to belong; a place where friendship, common interest and mechanical fun are self evident; where things are repaired and not thrown away. The cars are donated by their owners and hopefully this Standard will be brought back its best by the young aspiring mechanics and their mentors

Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, as a small family car originally for DAF and to be called the DAF 77.
DAF needed to seek a partner to help develope the new model for the market, and approached BMW, Audi and Volvo to no avail. Volvo who had originally been dissuaded by the costs involved, took a second look encouraged by a ready access to Renault engines which would drastically reduce the costs of new Volvo models and the benifits of producing cars in the Netherlands, giving them an open market to the EEC, of which Sweden was not a part. Volvo purchased a one-third share in DAF in 1973, increasing to a three-quarters stake in 1975; the DAF company's name was changed to Volvo Car BV that year.freeing DAF to concentrate on their truck division.
The 340 along with the larger engined 360, began in 1976 as a three (343) with a five door (345) Hatchback, joining the line up in 1979, The extra doors added 30 kg (66 lb); other modifications included better brakes, a slightly larger track due to wider wheels, and interval wipers. The third digit designating the number of doors was dropped from model designations starting with the 1983 model year
The 343 and 345 were powered by 70bhp 1.4 litre Renault Cléon-Fonte engine A facelift in summer 1981 for the 1982 model year featured a revised bonnet, grille, front lamp arrangement, and slightly different front wings and refreshed interiors.
Also in 1983 the more powerful 360 was introduced with two 2.0 L engine choices, of 95PS and 115PS for the fuel injected version. The 360s were four-cylinders and not sixes as implied by the name his 2.0 L 360 model was available in five-door and three-door hatchback form, with four-door notchback Saloon added in 1985

GIMPY is a very special young Canadian Goose (Branta Canadensis), who was born early in 2014 with a severe disability.
My wife's company moved into new premises in Dartford in July this year and that's when she first became acquainted with Gimpy and his three sibliings and single parent who looked after them all. As can be seen in the photograph, both his wings are deformed, no more than stumps that sit at a permanently jaunty angle, and are unable to move, develope or aid flight. My wife started feeding Gimpy and his siblings and watched them all grow and develope into young adults, before doing what comes naturally and taking to the wing, leaving little Gimpy alone in the lake to fend for himself.
Against the odds, Gimpy has survived, making friends with any Geese or Swans that frequent the lake, (he seems to think he is a Swan himself despite their persistant nips and abuse telling him otherwise), as well as becoming a much loved feathered celebrity with locals and pasers by, and staff at my wife's workplace who all feed him. Today, Sunday 12th September, my wife drove me to meet the Gimp Meister in the flesh, and I have to say I fell in love with the little fella. Such a cutie with a great determination and tenacity amidst the feisty swans and other wading birds, first to the food handouts, standing on your feet as he grabs both the food and your affection.
Gimpy, you are an extraordinary character, and a little beauty as well.

It were converted from the seventh prototype izdeliye 9. 12 Fulcrum-A coded 918 Blue. The conversion was modest. I was fitted with a stronger undercarriage and reinforced tail equipped with an arrestor hook, but lacked folding wings and had no armament. First flight was on August 11, 1982. KVP means Korotkii Vzlet i Posadka or short take off and landing. "18 Blue" was withdrawn from use in 1992 after 265 test flights. It was later used as a ground instructional airframe at the Yuriy A. Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica (1948-50) Engine 1971cc S6 OHV
Race Number 145 Peter Roberts
FRAZER NASH SET
www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623665136729...
Shortly after WW!!, Frazer Nash were aquired by the Bristol Aeroplane Company and plans were put forward to develope a luxury Saloon under the Bristol name and a new Frazer Nash sports car, both to be powered by the former BMW 328 engine built under license by Frazer Nash during the second half of 1930s. Though before the cars could be marketed the companies had become independant once more. Bristol built their 400 and susequent models. Whilke Frazer Nash with limited resources produced a sports car that was a clear developement of the BMW. he chassis was new but still consisted of a conventional steel ladder frame. Suspension at the front was through lower wishbones with a single transverse leaf spring. A live rear axle was fitted with torsion bar springs. A development of the overhead-valve 328 engine was, which featured hemispherical combustion chambers. Equipped with three carburettors, it produced around 120 bhp..
A few of these cycle winged High Speed Models were built for competition, one of which achieved third position at the 1949 Le Mans 24 hour race driven by Norman Culpan and Harold John Aldington.
The success prompted orders for these cars, and in honour of the achievment the model was renamed Le Mans replica, from late 1949 when the power output was also increased to 125bhp. Around 50 were sold and competition successes include outright victories in the 1951 Targa Florio (Franco Cortese), and the 1952 Sebring 12 hour (Larry Kulok and Harry Gray)
In 1952 a Mark II version was introduced with a lighter tubular chassis.
Production was ended in late 1953 due to the imminent ban on cycle wing, bodied cars in sports car racing. but today the cars remain active in historic events and are extremely valuable, not supringly giving rise to the creation of replica Replicas
In the 1960's or 70's Crosthwaite and Gardiner built a number of replicas, after their restoration of an original frame following a racing accident. These cars used a duplicate tubular chassis and running gear from scrapped Bristols. The finished cars had copies of the Le Mans Replica bodies with the correct instruments and trim.
Another series of replica were began around 1990, by Werner Oswald and associates, who laid down parts for ten cars possibly copied from the Frank Synter Le Mans Replica I. These were sold in kit for (Werner Oswald Kits) also known as WOKs. Around the same time one of the Werner Oswald associates realising the Frazer Nash name had not been registered for a few years bought the title from Companies House. Meaning Oswald could now advertise the cars legally as having been made by Frazer Nash Cars Ltd. avoiding the cars aquiring Q plate registrations as kit cars.

UPDATE 16th April 2015: Well, the little fella has now been missing for almost a week, my wife reporting that he has not been around when she feeds the birds since Monday. I know that several people had spoken to my wife about trying to rescue Gimpy and take him to a bird sanctuary, and I can only hope that this is the case, and not that he fell prey to the foxes in the area. Fingers crossed he is safe somewhere and being loved and pampered as he was during his time here on the lake.
