While today’s destination, nicknamed the House of William Hyde, may imply a scary residence that is perhaps haunted, in actuality the only thing scary about this home is probably the real estate taxes. This single family home was last sold for $1.1 million…over thirty years ago. Pretty amazing for a home that was built in 1822 for the cost of $100.
This wood-frame home was built in 1822 by a sash-maker named William Hyde. The property is one of the last remaining wood-frame constructions within the city due to the fact that wood-frame homes were deemed a fire hazard and therefore banned in 1866.
The House of Hyde has been transformed on multiple occasions since its original construction. During the Civil War the home was reportedly used as a brothel (assumingly to boost morale during War time). In 1870 a third floor was added to the original two-story building. The building was subdivided for a period in the 1920s into various apartment units before being eventually restored into a single-family residence (as it originally began).
Followers of the television series Friends may have captured a brief glimpse of the exterior of this property. The home was shown to represent the apartment for Ross Geller on a couple of occasions (and is ironically located just across the street from the infamous Friends apartment building).

Taken from halfway along Windy Ridge, Lake Basin extends from center frame left. One of my destinations in Return to Neverland 2023. The JMT is on the other side of the white ridge, East side of the basin. Mt. Ruskin is back there.
Red Point is center frame, Red Pass to it's right, Marion Lake below behind it. I'm coming out into Lake Basin in the trees and will either head for Cartridge Pass or Dumbbell Lakes and Amphitheater Lake and Cataract Creek. Returning JMT via Rae Lakes area if the rivers allow it. If the passes are snowy, I'll spend a day exploring and return the way I came, the more traditional Neverland route.
Going to be stuffed with snow and the SHR would probably not be advisable for first timers, or old ones like me, until last half of the season. Lots of rocks over the passes which I almost postholed with just grass let alone snow cover.

I love Liverpool - my wife comes from the place and I've visited plenty. This ad, promoting the ctiy while it has European Capital of Culture this year, does a poor job, though. Poor design, doesn't say much, and has that touched-by-committee sense that so much destination advertising and local authority marketing does. It contains the skyline (nice), an Antony Gormley beach statue (lovely) and the words "King Lear" floating about in the background. And this is an ad in Picadiily Circus tube, in the middle of one of the most exciting, culture-crammed cities in the world.
Lille is a city in northern France. It is the principal city of the Lille Métropole, the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the country behind those of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Lille is situated on the Deûle River, near France's border with Belgium. It is the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region and the prefecture of the Nord department.
Lille is a top travel destination, with its Flemish ambience, excellent museums, great food and beer, and the world-renowned Grande Braderie (Europe's biggest flea market).
Lille's main square is now an attractive pedestrian area overlooked by the Voix du Nord building (home of the North's leading newspaper, once the journal of the French Resistance in WWII). La Vieille Bourse (the Old Exchange), a centre where Flemish merchants traded their famous high-quality cloth, is on the left. The Column commemorates the siege of Lille by the Austrians in 1792.

I didn't quite have the courage to drive this road to see where it ended up. Vast plains as far as the eye can see on Tasmania's rugged West Coast - off Pieman Road.

What a mess! The 'new' electronic route information display at the Luton Station Interchange or is it Luton Railway Station?
No Bay numbers are shown and there is no indication of arrivals and departures (Service 'C' at 13:28! Why is there a mix and match on times or minutes to wait? It is a mess!

This is a photo of Gunghalin drive from a vantage point just inside Aranda, taken with a setting on my digital camera that makes it highly sensitive to light and movement. This made it a bit of a challenge to actually take the photo standing up, since it requires a sixty second take time, thus I had to place the camera carefully so it would stand up and not fall over. I feel it captured all the detail I wanted.
What I was trying to achieve with this was a sense that you are coming out of the bush (hence the rocks and tree) and you are greeted by the blinding lights of the highway as if to say; "One path always leads to another."

My coworker labeled this the "Tim Burton" bulletin cover. There is a dry swipe at the way we used to buy our bulletins. This is dead on the style of them. But notice the irony of the verse to the image and you'll get the Tim Burton reference. The real test will be if the congregation gets it.

TK-Doc: "Anakin! Padmé! You've got to come with me."
Padmé: "Anakin! Who is that strange trooper coming out of the transport?"
Anakin: "It's alright, m'lady. I'll deal with him."
TK-Doc: "It is imperative that you come along. The future of the galaxy is at stake."
Anakin: "The only future I see at stake is yours. Now you better get a move along and stop harassing the Senator, or I will have to begin aggressive negotiations."
TK-Doc: "Now Anakin, I don't want any trouble. I just want to help things and you can benefit from this."
Anakin: "Suppose I do help you. What's in it for us? And by the way, how did you happen to catch us two together. No one knows of us together."
TK-Doc: "It would be difficult to explain, but I'll just say it right now. I'm from the future. I came here into the past to find you and show you the destruction you will create if it is not abated."
Anakin: "Hah, can you believe this nut? Padmé, now that this war's over, let's get off of this hellish planet. Maybe a relaxing vacation on Naboo..."
Padmé: "I don't know, Anakin. I just don't see what you mean by ruling the galaxy as husband and wife. You're going down a path....."
Anakin: "Now just a minute.... Wait.. What the hell? Obi-Wan? YOU BROUGHT HIM HERE?!?!"
TK-Doc: "Oh bugger...."
TK-Doc realizes there is no helping the situation after this point and drives the DeLorean into temporal displacement. The sound of an erupting volcano masks the sonic boom.
If only there was someone else that could help out.....

Our frieght train loaded and warmed up, just out of Rajahmundry ready to do the short ride to Vizag. Only ~200 km today. We'd be covering 2 of the 3 places by the end of this journey.
Built by the Schiffswerks Rieherst company in Hamburg, the Umbria was launched on December 30th 1911 with the name of Bahia Blanca. It was a large freighter by that time, 150 meters long, with a power capable of providing a speed of 14 knots that could carry 9,000 tons of cargo and up to 2,000 passengers. In 1912 it began operating the Hamburg-America line doing different jobs between Europe and Argentina until the outbreak of World War I, when it was based in Buenos Aires. In 1918 the ship was acquired by the Argentinian government and it was not until 1935 when the ship was taken over by the Italian government and renamed again: the Umbria. From that moment its trips were to transport troops and during the following two years carried several thousand soldiers to the Italian colonies in East Africa.
The loss of the Umbria
In May 1940, when Italy was still neutral in World War II, the Umbria was secretly loaded with 360,000 bombs between 15 kg and 100 kg, 60 boxes of detonators, building materials and three Fiat Lunga cars, carrying a total 8,600 tons of weapons towards the East Africa. The explosives had destination Massawa and Assab, Eritrea, that was Italian colony by then, and the rest of the cargo was heading different locations in Asia. Italy's entry into the war was imminent and this shipment was destined to the defense of the colonies against the Allies and to the possible expansion of its African territories.
On 3rd June 1940 the Umbria reached Port Said, northern Egypt, where loaded with 1,000 tons of coal and water in a movement to fool the Allies, trying to look like a harmless freighter. The port, controlled by the Royal Navy, and its authorities allowed the ship enter on the Red Sea three days after arrival. The British delayed the departure of the Umbria knowing that Italy's entry into the war was imminent and that the cargo of Umbria had devastating power that sooner or later would be used against the Allies and why not, to get a great load to fight fascism. But Italy, as a neutral country that it was, had every right to transport weapons much like any other cargo to its colonies.
Having met the deadline to be retained, the Umbria crossed the Suez Canal on June 6th but with the escort of the HMS Grimsby. The importance and destructive capacity of the cargo required it. Three days later the Umbria entered in Sudan waters and the HMS Grimsby ordered the Umbria captain to anchor on Wingate Reef under the pretext of searching for contraband. Moments later the British warship HMS Leander arrived with a group of 20 sailors who boarded the Umbria. After thoroughly searching the ship and finding nothing, the captain ordered the British troops to remain the night aboard the Umbria.
The next morning Lorenzo Muiesan, Umbria captain, was in his cabin listening to the radio when Mussolini announced the entry of Italy into the World War II. Hostilities would begin at midnight of that day. Muiesan, a very patriotic captain with long experience, was the only one in the area who had heard the news and knew immediately that both Umbria and the burden would be used by the Allies against their own country. He had no option to disable both. In a move of extraordinary intelligence, as the hours passed retained by the British who did not yet know that Italy was officially the enemy, the captain ordered his crew conducting a rescue simulation... that was more real than the British thought. This maneuver, which the English soldiers agreed as they believed it would serve to further delay the departure of the Umbria. While the Italians occupied the lifeboats, the chief engineers, following Muiesan´s orders, opened all the valves and drown the ship to the bottom of the reef. With the crew safe, the British only had time to get on their ship and watch the freighter slid slowly.
When the captain of HMS Grimsby asked why he had done that Muiesan confirmed the declaration of war from Italy to Britain. The next day Muiesan and the rest of Umbria crew departed detainees to India, where they spent four years in prison.
CARGO:
The Umbria was carrying 360,000 individual aircraft bombs ranging in size from 15, 50 and 100 kg. The vessel also carried a large quantity of fuses, ammunition and detonators as well as other traditional cargo. The captain knew these bombs would be confiscated and used by the enemy against his country should they ever discover them which was why he made the call to sink the ship.
The Umbria had sailed in June 1940 with 6,000 tons of bombs, 60 boxes detonators, explosives, weapons and three Fiat 1100 Lunga from Genoa via Livorno and Naples in the Suez Canal and on the way via Massaua and Assab to Calcutta.
