Scotch Argus Butterfly:
Despite its name, the Scotch Argus is not only found in Scotland; it is also found at two sites in the north of England. A freshly emerged Scotch Argus is a sight to behold; the dark brown velvety upper sides making the butterfly appear almost jet black from a distance. The butterfly is unmistakable when seen basking with its wings open, when orange bands containing distinctive spots are revealed. This butterfly lives in well-defined colonies that are often very large.
Like the Mountain Ringlet, the ability of this butterfly to survive cool temperatures means that it was probably one of the first species to recolonise the British Isles after the last ice age, over 10,000 years ago. The English colonies, Arnside Knott and Smardale Gill, are both found in Westmorland. Colonies are much more numerous in Scotland, where this butterfly can be found in most of northern, western and southwest Scotland. This butterfly is absent from the lowlands of central Scotland, many of the western isles (including the Outer Hebrides), Orkney and Shetland.

Despite the fact that it rained for two days straight and it was still cold, wet and rainy.... cabin fever won out and I had to shoot something!!! Found this array of colorful trees near Mercer, Wi.
.. despite prevailing winds I'm heading for Florida, with a stop-over in Virginia Beach, to visit some family. I'll monitor the groups as I travel. I want to thank all you lovely people for your generosity of spirit. I'll be posting again soon.. Tom
Despite leaving my house under full cloud cover, by the time I got to the Onawa area the clouds were clearing up nicely, and Job 1 had gotten a fairly quick departure from Brownville Junction. A hour and a half later, and they're seen here tackling the grade west out of Onawa, passing Little Greenwood Pond with a trio of SD40-2Fs and a GP38-3 for power, with sixty-one cars trailing. This spot is the location of a head-on collision in 1919, where an eastbound freight train misread their train orders, and hit a westbound passenger train of immigrants, killing twenty-three people.
Despite its name, the CNR is neither owned nor operated by the Canadian government and it does not service Canada alone. Its network covers Canada, Mid-western and South USA. It is a publicly traded company with Bill Gates as the largest single shareholder (Wikipedia).
Despite only meeting 3 trains, it’s taken over 10 hours to make it 137 miles since departing Denver. Somehow these Denver crews know how to leave just enough time to make Pburg but without time to do any of the work setting up the train to load!
As is often the case in the late afternoons, the storms were dissipating and the sun was starting to peak through as the train climbed the Congor Mesa.

Despite tooling around on the clifftop for way too long I was still the first onto the beach this morning which, with a falling tide, gave me blemish free sand to play with.
The sun hadn't appeared as I'd hoped whilst I was perched on the cliff but, when it eventually appeared, it shone like a demon!
I was thinking high contrast mono when I took this but I like the subtle colours too much so I've left it as it is..
Despite getting home from Otira at 3am (and that was without chasing trains on the main trunk due to the Labour Day holiday), I was away at 8am this morning and made it to Tumai for 920.
The sea fog cleared and while this could have been better, it could also have been much worse, as I feared the coal containers might not be on it. It turned out that without the coal this wouldn't have been much of a train.

Despite the common name of Greenish Yellow-Finch, this species is not a member of the Finches, Euphonias, etc. family (Fringillidae). It belongs to the Tanagers family (Thraupidae). This individual was seen in vegetation along a small creek in the town of Ollantaytambo, which is the starting point for the Peru Rail train to Agua Calientes — the base for visits to the Inca site of Machu Picchu.

Despite it being about 100ºF (~38ºC) Jasper wanted a little outdoor play time on Saturday evening. So bucket of ice water in hand we indulged him. For a few minutes anyway 😎
Despite being so common in my area, these little beetles always seem to catch my eye. They're surprisingly kinda cute too

Despite being the commonest and most widespread UK bird of prey, it was still a priviIege and thrill to get so close to this wild bird.
I had to fire shots off one at a time or in small bursts as the shutter noise was distracting this buzzard from devouring its pigeon.
It is quite large with broad, rounded wings, and a short neck and tail. When gliding and soaring it will often hold its wings in a shallow 'V' and the tail is fanned. Birds are variable in colour from all dark brown to much paler variations, all have dark wingtips and a finely barred tail. Their plaintive mewing call could be mistaken for a cat.
Despite the cold, I like the winter for its creation of beautiful Ice sculptures. Happy weekend ;-))
Despite her incurable illness, Clarissa, one of my daughter's cats, was full of life, friendly and always UP for a fun game! Unfortunately, she lost her fight against the disease in January 2022 and brave Clarissa had to make her way over the Rainbow Bridge!

Waitematā Harbour is the main access by sea to Auckland, New Zealand. For this reason it is often referred to as Auckland Harbour and is crossed by the Auckland Harbour Bridge, despite the fact that it is one of two harbours surrounding the city. The Waitematā forms the north and east coasts of the Auckland isthmus. It is matched on the south by the shallower waters of Manukau Harbour.

Despite being absolutely terrifying, whip scorpions are actually quite harmless. They have no venom would rather make a speedy getaway then try to win a match against a much scarier human. They still win the metal for spookiest looking bug though

This one got away, despite the Coyote's best effort to turn it into a snack. Actually, grasshoppers seem to be the main course these days, and this will likely hold true until they are wiped out by a hard frost. So far no snow is in the forecast, but winter can hit anytime.
In years past - in other locations - I usually found November to be dreary with rain and wind; not so here on the prairie. The transition period - from sometime in October until about mid-December - is a great time to photograph the resident mammals. The Mule Deer rut is not far off. Ice will begin to form on the river. The first snowfalls are a novelty. By mid-January the novelty will have worn off and we'll all be in survival mode. Just like the Coyotes.

Despite it's name this gull is quite rare in most parts of the UK.
Fortunately on the west coast of Scotland we have them in abundance.

Despite the bad weather in this trip, I could see the northern lights six nights of eighteen. In three of them the sky was very cloudy (like in this photo). I will post soon some images of the best nights, in one of them lady aurora danced weakly although the surroundings were fantastic (the glacier lagoon) and the other two nights the show was wonderful.
These photo was taken the first week, in Kirkjufell mountain, not in the frame because I had to shoot southward because the solar activity was very high (geomagnetic storm G2). Sadly, the clouds don't allow me to enjoy of a great spectacle and the auroras were very blurred.
Despite it's name this gull is quite rare in most parts of the UK. On recent experience you are less likely to see one of these than you are to see a hoopoe.
Fortunately on the west coast of Scotland we have these gulls in abundance and at the time of writing we are a hoopoe free zone lol.

Despite my pinched nerve and headache I went to the wildlife park on Wednesday. Not a brilliant idea, I know, but I have never been good at taking it easy. I mainly went there because I hoped to see the wildcat kittens. And I took a monopod because I didn't want to hold the heavy camera all the time while waiting for the wildcats to show up. The visit wasn't as successful as I had hoped as I only managed a short glimpse on two of the kittens and could only take a few quick photos. At least this one appeared in the sunshine for a short moment. The wildcats enclosure is generally difficult for photogaphy, it's quite dark due to the dense vegetation and it has a triple wire-mesh fence, a nightmare for the autofocus.
Despite using my 600mm lens, this bovine was on to me quite quickly despite all the lush green grass it had to dine on! Should wash your knees before dinner though!

Despite the foggy weather hawks and other animals are always out on the hunt. I liked this image for the change in density of the fog as you went further into the marsh.
Despite scorching heat, I hung out this afternoon with these characters and felt well rewarded for my time and sweat. I shall be visiting Franklin's Ground Squirrels for a shoot in another park soon.
Despite heat waves and harsh light, this shot just has a certain feel to it that I love. Tankwa Karoo National Park, Western Cape, South Africa

Despite having a flat tyre I had a good day yesterday. An hour or so making Triptychs, only the second time i'd used Photoshop :)) Then s slow cycle to see the bees. Actually too slow as my back tyre was virtually flat, that explains my aching thighs over the last few days . Then a mint tea and some air for my tyre from Paul, digging out horse bones from the sea, finding I'd picked up a swarm of bees and a great cycle back up the estuary with the freshening wind at my back. Finally a fantastic offer of a strawberry cream scone freshly made by the children next door, and games of I spy as we watched the sun start it's slow descent. A fantastic FaceTime with Maura and a perfect lockdown day. Yesterday Man is by Robert Wyatt on my playlist.

Despite the quarantine, I am still thankful to be able to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of nature all around me. It is soothing to my soul... I love squirrels, and this adorable critter briefly posed for me in this lovely garden, captivating me with its beauty...
Praying dear friends you are continuing to stay safe and well during these trying times and grateful to those who take the time to view, fave, or comment. It is truly appreciated...
Despite that it's the very end of the season, I found a few yellow datura blooms that hadn't died back yet. I darkened the b/g for contrast.
Thank you so much for taking the time to view this image and for leaving me a comment! Have a great day and weekend!
Despite I come quite frequent to this location nearby my home, I especially like to visit when the lake is frozen and we have such magical wintry conditions like this morning in early January, 2020. This shot consists of a fourteen vertical exposures. Nevertheless, the stitched panoramic result was quite hard to crop, as I wanted to show the nice structure of the big poplar tree on the left, as well as the fallen tree on the right. That's why I came around with the very wide format at the end.
