London Design Festival 2019 - Please Be Seated
“British designer Paul Cocksedge is transforming Finsbury Avenue Square with Please Be Seated. Located in the heart of Broadgate, the Landmark Project will be the most ambitious of British Land’s commissions to date.
The large-scale installation fuses innovation and technology, and responds to the changing rhythm of the community: its design features curves for people to sit on and walk under, further enhancing London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood. The work is made from scaffolding planks, and Cocksedge has collaborated with Essex-based high-end interiors company White & White to re-imagine and re-use the building wood.
“Every single aspect of the installation is tailored to its environment as well as the function it serves,” says Cocksedge. “The curves raise up to create backrests and places to sit, as well as space for people to walk under, or pause and find some shade. It walks the line between a craft object and a design solution. It occupies the square without blocking it.”
Broadgate’s The Space | 3FA will be home to an exhibition of Paul Cocksedge’s work, including his journey from inception to creation of Please Be Seated. As part of Shoreditch Design Triangle’s Design Night, Paul will be in conversation with a panel of experts discussing meaningful design for the public realm.
Chief Executive of British Land, Chris Grigg said: “Design is integral to everything we do at British Land so we’re delighted to continue our partnership with London Design Festival for the fourth consecutive year. We truly believe good design has the power to create places where people want to be and where people want to spend time.”

Signage program for the St Joseph Hospital's London location; the program was developed by Forge Media + Design based on the St Joseph's standards.
This was a conceptual project I did for Design 2. Panel 1 had to have a poem that mentions something from nature, in this case a coconut. The poem had to be printed on something non-traditional (no printer paper). Panel 2 is a picture of the item. Panel 3 is a palette study using 6 different paint chip colors you could find in the item, then recreating them in acrylic paint, and using those colors and mixing them together to create new colors and shades. The last board had to be a 3D model of the item that in some way related back to the theme of the poem.
Tijdens de Mash Up Material Night werden de grenzen van hout onderzocht. Hout is het enige bouwmateriaal dat klimaatneutraal is. Is het daarmee ook het materiaal van de toekomst? Experimenten met hout leiden tot zowel vernieuwende als omstreden toepassingen. Ontwerpers Marjan van Aubel, Lex Pott en Chris Kabel vertelden over hun eigen experimenten met dit veelzijdige materiaal. Moderator was ontwerper en onderzoeker Sophie Krier.
LEX POTT
Lex Pott heeft een grote interesse voor natuurlijke materialen, waaronder hout. In zijn ontwerpen gaat hij vaak uit van het materiaal zelf en maakt hij doelbewust de verschillende fasen in de bewerking van een materiaal ook zichtbaar in het eindproduct.
CHRIS KABEL
Chris Kabel ontwerpt gebruiksvoorwerpen, vaak door bestaande objecten en materialen vanuit een onverwacht perspectief te vervormen. Door een expliciete scheiding van functie, materiaal en vorm verwarren zijn ontwerpen: ze beschikken over eigenschappen die op grond van hun uiterlijk niet worden verwacht. Voor zijn innovatief materiaalgebruik won hij in 2009 de DOEN Materiaalprijs.
MARJAN VAN AUBEL
Marjan van Aubel komt uit een familie van scheikundigen, een achtergrond die bepalend is geweest voor haar werkwijze. Ze ontwikkelde ‘foaming wood’ door restmateriaal van hout met water en biologische hars te vermengen. Dat brengt een chemisch proces op gang dat vervolgens weer leidt tot pulp. Eenmaal uitgehard, past zij het materiaal toe in een serie meubelen.
TENTOONSTELLING HOUT
De Mash Up Material Night was onderdeel van het parallelprogramma georganiseerd in het kader van de tentoonstelling HOUT. De cyclische natuur van materialen, plekken en ideeën, te zien van 16 mei tot 10 augustus in Het Nieuwe Instituut.

On Monday 7 December 2015, Show Three in LCC's Postgraduate Shows 2015 opened with a Private View. This School of Design exhibition featured MA Contemporary Typographic Media, MA Graphic Branding and Identity, MA Graphic Design, MA Graphic Moving Image, MDes Service Design Innovation and Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma Design for Visual Communication.
