Beazley Designs of the Year 2017 (October 2017 to February 2018)
Every year, the Design Museum recognises worldwide excellence in design through its exhibition Beazley Designs of the Year. For each edition of the series, designs are nominated by international experts, and a shortlist is then selected by the museum's curatorial team.
Design comes from many people - not just professionals in the field, but also independent activists, entrepreneurs, artists and others who simply want to make a better world. The structure of the exhibition reflects this diversity, representing different motivations that lie behind the nominated projects. We have also taken into account recent events, including political developments such as the Brexit vote and the ongoing refugee crisis. Design is both a reflection of its times and potentially a means of intervention.

Architect Rianne Makkink (Studio Makkink & Bey) is Artist in Residence aan de Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam. Tijdens de zomerworkshop in de Noordoostpolder word vanuit 3 scenario's een soort nieuw productie-landschap 1:1 gecreëerd. Er worden 3 nutsverenigingen opgestart: Schoon Water, Energiepad en Compost. De verenigingen staan voor een nieuw soort waterwinning, energieproductie en voedselverwerking met meer invloed voor bewoners. Verenigingen met het bedrijfsleven en de natuur als bondgenoten. Samen een publiek belang dienen, samen verantwoordelijkheden delen, samen een mooi waterpark ontwikkelen en beheren. Samen verenigd tot nut van vooruitgang. De deelnemende studenten komen van de Akademie van Bouwkunst en de Design Academy.

Character design for Ariana, a shape shifter for the story "Legend of Kaylen". She can shapeshift into a wolf whenever she wishes due to a curse of a frost deity. However whenever she shifts, she loses control over herself in wolf form bit by bit, which will eventually lead to her losing control completely and being trapped in this form until she dies. Her design resembles the warrior in the work "Ice Warrior" strongly as I was still developing Ariana at this point.
On the left hand side, I had sketched, both with HB, a wolfs eye and tried to create an eye shape for her, which resembles it. This is to show her connection to her wolf form.
On the right hand side is a sketch of her staff, made of ice and with runes engraved along it. She uses this as her primary fighting weapon when she is her elf form. The staff is drawn with HB pencil for the base and 4B for the finished outlines and shadows.
I choose a dynamic pose for her to understand her body and body language better. It was a great opportunity to study the proportions when some parts of her body, such as the arms and shoulders, are cropped due to her 3/4 stance. It was also a chance to study the movement of her hair and clothes in a dynamic position.
