It is in the contrast of light and dark that design happens.

I took this macro one month ago.....and here we are at the start of August already. We're just finishing another hot long weekend over here and by the looks of all that is circled on my calendar this month, I see my flickr time being sporadic yet again.

Well, I guess that's what summer is for.....go out and enjoy it! :)

(da)

."MASP" - The São Paulo Museum of Art

Located on Paulista Avenue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It is well known for its headquarters, a concrete and glass structure designed by Lina Bo Bardi, whose main body is supported by two lateral beams over a 74 m (243 ft.) freestanding space, considered a landmark of the city and a main symbol of modern Brazilian architecture. "MASP" is South America's most comprehensive fine-art museum.

These ornate street lamps featuring a stylised ammonite design adorn the town of Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in the West Country of England. The coastal resort town is situated along a stretch of coastline known as the Jurassic Coast due to the profusion of fossil remains from that geological period.

Most famous among the fossils are the large ammonites that can easily be spotted embedded in rocks along the beach only a short walk from the town. The spiral design is based on the shape of the shells of the ammonites which resemble those of living Nautilus creatures although they are closer relations to living octopus and squid. The spiral shape of the shells can also be seen to resemble rams' horns.

Public housing apartments in Northcote, Victoria. These rather interestingly designed apartments replaced some older ones which were quite run down. I think the new ones were built around 2010. The building on the right hand side of the picture is part of a fairly new privately developed complex. Taken at twilight hence the bluish effect.

On Saturday late afternoon we went to see St Mary's Cathedral near Japantown in San Francisco. A service was in session, we were asked to wait until it finished. The church has beautiful stained glass windows. After the congregation left I took this photo in the center aisle facing back from a low point of view to catch the reflections on the floor.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from three RAW exposures.

while Haida is 377 feet long and displaces 2,745 tons the beam is only 36.5 feet a key factor no doubt in her ability to do up to 36.5 knots. Given the role of a destroyer this emphasis on speed was a critical design element and perfectly understandable. Pity the poor crew though when faced with heavy weather which was all too common on the Murmansk run. I can only imagine the ship's motion would have been very unsettling in heavy seas.
