The Netherlands has a long history of free speech and graphics played an important role in promoting the various political parties that existed in the Netherlands at the turn of the century.
By the 1920's and 30's. the art moderne style, which had developed out of art nouveau, became an international trend and was the most predominate form used in the Netherlands during this time period.
This is one of 2 identical lightshades I bought in Byron Bay, Australia, last year. They came as a 'flat pack' of 50+ puzzle pieces that looked like an 'italic' H. The woman who sold them to me suggested she make them up as they could be 'tricky' to construct. I declined. Apart from the fact that I didn't have enough room in the car to transport them back home, I thought that they didn't look that difficult to assemble. Famous last words. I even resorted to using instructions! It took me hours to assemble the first, the second was a lot faster. I like them now!
