No other culture is as food-conscious as that of the Chinese.

The importance of food in Chinese culture and daily life is reflected in greetings.

For instance, instead of asking “How are you?” (ni hao ma 你好吗), it is quite normal to ask “Have you eaten?” (chi fan le me 吃饭了吗).

The logic behind is that people who have just eaten should feel well and happy.

Getting the text to follow the curve was ultra frustrating, resulting in much cursing, but now that I know how, it's actually not that hard to do.

FRIAR LAURENCE: These violent delights have violent ends

And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,

Which as they kiss consume: the sweetest honey

Is loathsome in his own deliciousness

And in the taste confounds the appetite:

Therefore love moderately; long love doth so;

Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.

Kahn didn't appreciate it at all! Much too busy for him.

Yum delicious foot. Close-up of a Sharp-shinned Hawk feeding. To me this foot looks as if it comes from a mourning dove..

I was walking on a small dead-end path at John Heinz NWR when crow started making a lot of noise. So I maneuvered myself at the edge of the ice at the end of the path to see what was causing the fuss.

Almost immediately this sharp-shinned hawk carrying a partially eaten meal landed within a few feet of me, then moved itself behind some branches, so I could not see much of it. At least two crows were following the hawk and landed in near-by trees watching and still making a lot of noise.

The hawk was so close to me that I had to mount my 400 mm lens on a 21mm extension tube in order to be able to focus on it. I could not back up as I was right at the edge of the ice. The hawk was aware of my presence, and when I tried to move to get a clear shot the hawk moved further behind the branches, but seemed to prefer my presence more than harassment by the crows.

Earlier in the morning I had spooked both a merlin and then a northern shrike by trying to get a clear shot so I decided to wait and see what happened.

Despite being somewhat gory it was exhilarating and interesting as I have never been so close to raptor feeding in the wild. I could not positively identify its prey by believe it was a dove.

When the hawk had finished its meal, it moved out and back then posed in a clearer spot, as if to thank me for allowing it to feed without being disturbed. The hawk was still so close that I could only just fit the body into a full frame vertical format but could not get its tail into the photo (main photograph). Blood from its meal is still visible on the talons and bill.

I have also included so some close-ups of it feeding in the comment box.

After posing for a short time the hawk did not fly away it just hopped into through the branches higher in the trees.

As I was waling away the watching crows flew down to search for any scraps that the hawk may have left.

Overall it was amazing experience to be so close to a raptor, especially as this is the first time that I have captured good photographs of a sharp-shinned hawk. I do not know why this hawk tolerated me being so close - I can speculate that it sensed that my presence may have shielded it from harassment by the crows.

Note all photographs were taken with a 400mm lens mounted on a 21 mm extension tube to be able to focus in close enough.
