Delicate Arch at Arches National Park in Utah. Used a 4x5 View Camera with a Star Filter. This picture was taken several years ago, don't remember the specific film used.

Flying to Az today to see my 3 sisters and my mom-we havent all been together in one place in about 20 years....way too long...so many of these images I find inspiring and representative of family-the threads that are delicate and yet hold us together in so many of lifes difficulties..but that's what life is... the good and the bad... and how we are able to come through it...hopefully in a better place....this will be fun...crazy... chaotic and fun...

Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for my Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 300,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Jess and I hiked up 45min to see Delicate Arch. The path was pretty icy but well worth it. Delicate Arch is truly an amazing sight and it is bigger than I imagined. Unfortunately the sky was all cloudy and the sun couldn't break through. So we left and called it a day.
The next day we hiked around the park to see a couple arches. The landscape is beautiful with all the snow. In the afternoon the clouds started to disappear and it looked like it was going to have great light for the sunset. So we drove back to the Delicate Arch Trailhead. I hiked up the hill again and set up for this panorama shot. I stayed till the sun set completely, packed up my gear and started hiking down the hill in the dark. It was freezing cold, but luckily Jess was waiting in a warm car...
This panorama is a series of eight shots stitched together.
This red pierrot was doing a balancing act on the small twig in the rain. Poor soul, the rain and wind were making the balancing difficult for it.... and difficult taking a snap too !

I live in the inland area of Southern California and it gets REAL hot here, all the time. Today, it was 77 degrees!
On winter mornings however, the temps can be quite chilly even if the days are warm so I am able to shoot some "cold-looking" photos now and then if I get out before the sun evaporates everything.

A painted Lady butterfly sitting in a violet flower field. Amazing - such a complicated and colourful texture on the wings, but nevertheless I just saw it when it moved.

Tuesday evening is one of my usual gym sessions, however I've injured my ankle (nothing serious thankfully), which means I can't train for a few days. So to drown my sorrows I grabbed my camera and headed into our garden. The light was magnificent, and I spent an hour just milling around trying to capture little parts of the garden I'd usually just walk past. The focus on the petal was pretty tricky to get as it was a little windy outside, but thankfully I managed to nail it.
I wanted to upload my Donegal photos before anything new, but I couldn't resist how pretty this little flower looked and wanted to share...

Really bad quality, but I was just so happy to see any kind of fungus during our trip to Trinidad & Tobago in March 2017. These small, white ones looked so delicate. They were photographed at the Asa Wright Nature Centre on the island of Trinidad, on 19 March 2017. They were growing at the edge of the trail that leads to the Dunston Oilbird Cave.
This adventure was only the second holiday of any kind, anywhere, that I have had in something like 30 or 35 years! The other holiday was a wonderful, one-week trip with my dear friends from England, Linda and Tony, when we went down south to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons in September 2012. I have had maybe half a dozen weekends away, including to Waterton National Park, which have helped keep me going.
Six birding/photographer friends and I decided that we would take this exciting trip together (from 12-21 March 2017), spending the first two or three days on the island of Tobago and then the rest of the time at the Asa Wright Nature Centre on the nearby, much larger island of Trinidad. We decided to take a complete package, so everything was included - accommodation at both places, all our food, and the various walks and day trips that we could choose from. Two of my friends, Anne B. and Brenda, saw to all the planning of flights and accommodations, which was so very much appreciated by the rest of us. I could never have done all this myself! We were so lucky with our flights, as we were just in time to get Black Friday prices, which were 50% off!
What a time we had, seeing so many beautiful and interesting things - and, of course, everything was a lifer for me. Some of these friends had visited Costa Rica before, so were familiar with some of the birds. There was a lot more to see on Trinidad, so we were glad that we chose Tobago to visit first and then spend a longer time at Asa Wright. It was wonderful to be right by the sea, though, at the Blue Waters Inn on the island of Tobago. Just gorgeous.
The Asa Wright Nature Centre, on Trinidad, is such an amazing place! We stayed in cabins up or down hill from the main building. Really, one doesn't need to travel away from the Centre for birding, as so many different species visit the Hummingbird feeders that are right by the huge, open veranda, and the trees of the rain forest high up the mountainous road. The drive up and down this narrow, twisting, pot-holed road was an adventure in itself! Never would I ever do this drive myself - we had a guide who drove us everywhere in a minibus. I had read many accounts of this road, lol! There was enough room for two vehicles to pass each other, and the honking of horns was almost continuous - either to warn any vehicle that might be coming fast around the next bend or as a sign that drivers knew each other. The drive along this road, from the coast to Asa Wright, took just over an hour each way.
I still miss the great food that was provided every single day at Asa Wright and even the Rum Punch that appeared each evening. I never drink at all, so I wasn't sure if I would even try the Punch - glad I did, though, as it was delicious and refreshing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all served buffet-style, with a great variety of dishes from which to choose. To me, pure luxury. So very, very grateful to have been invited to be part of this amazing adventure.
This is a video that I came across on YouTube, taken by Rigdon Currie and Trish Johnson, at many of the same places we visited on Trinidad and Tobago. Not my video, but it made me feel like I was right there still. Posting the link here again, so that I won't lose it.

What a spiritual experience! Right after taking these I went for a different viewpoint while Donna stayed here. On the hike down after the moon came up we were talking about it and both had come to the same conclusion. There is a definite vibe and sound at Delicate at sunset. We both compared it to Piazza Publico in Siena, Italy. Both are similar in the fact that there is no warning about what is going to happen. All of a sudden you come around a corner from the back side and you are there. (See two photos down.) Then the acoustics are unique. Here the cirque in front of, and rocks behind the crowd give it an auditorium feel. Then the crowd at the very moment we got there had an awed murmur sound going. Everyone talking because it was so interesting/cool/spiritual. But in a reverent way. Minutes later the sun was gone, and the crowd got noisier and partially disbanded, but the flavor lingered.
