A worker Carpenter Ant towers over her large herd of tiny aphid 'cows'. With eyes positioned on top of her head, she cannot see what is taking place beneath her jaws, so she must rely on her senses of touch and smell. Delicate, sensitive mouthparts for collecting tiny drops of honeydew are hidden behind those massive jaws.

Smile on Saturday: Flowers in Pastel

Woodhouse Mill Rec Aug5th 23.

A fascinating place to watch the sun rise.

White is the colour.

A macro view of a 3D hexagon formed with 2.5mm magnetic balls, taken for the Flickr Friday group theme, "Delicate." The frame represents a span of 1½ - inches across.

These magnetic balls are very small (about half the size of a BB) and difficult to work with, resulting in geometric shapes so delicate and fragile that even a slight mishandle will ruin it.

Strobist info:

The scene was illuminated by three Nikon SB900 speedlights positioned at 9- and 3-o'clock, one-foot above and two-feet away from the hexagon. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄64 power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

Lens: Tokina AT - X M100 AF PRO D (AF 100mm f / 2.8 Macro) with a 20mm extension tube attached.

Tried my hand at snowflake photography yesterday. I laid a blanket out on a table outside for them to land on. There weren't many whole snowflakes but found a few. This was one. I'll be trying some more in the future.

I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D

Love these kinds of cloud formations! - 7/2014

You just want to scrunch them up and hear them crisp dont you??

The classic dandelion shot.

In every true searcher of Nature there is a kind of religious reverence, for he finds it impossible to imagine that he is the first to have thought out the exceedingly delicate threads that connect his perceptions. Albert Einstein

Bottlebrush Buckeye, Aesculus parviflora (Sapindaceae)

A sunset somewhere in Iceland

The tendril-like branches of a Japanese White Birch (Betula platyphylla) reflect in the perfectly still waters of a highland pond in the mountains outside Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

The previous day the weather was wonderful and sunny, so why didn't we see the monkeys when it snowed, and go up to the highlands the first day when it was sunny? Why, what a fine question, and it's perplexing that I have no answer. The upside of waiting until the first snow of the season to visit the mountains? A cold, foggy, snowing walk in the woods. It was an interesting way to first set foot in a place, when the landscape and plants are hiding much of their potential.

Delphiniums have been one of my favourite flowers for many years! Love their shape & all the delightful colours they come in!

3 years ago we planted a Prunus domestica var. syriaca and this year it is full of blossom for the first time. Fortunately, the delicate flowers withstood the cold weather.

This morning the frost was hard and the sky clear. These Silver Birch held onto their icy coat far longer than some of the other bigger trees and gently, very gently moved in the slight breeze. They were almost dancing, clothed in the delicate ice layer in front of my eyes. So beautiful!

Delicate Arch II

Arches National Park

November 2015

Looking through Delicate Arch toward the snow-covered La Sal Mountains is one of the best views in Arches National Park. The contrast of red rock and winter white makes this view unforgettable.

Also know as a "Touch Me Not" it is often found along the sides of roads, in ditches and along edges of fields. They are very delicate and Hummingbirds love them.
