As the November sun rises over the prairies, cotton candy clouds fill the sky - replacing the morning fog and frost, dissipating with the first rays of light. The silence of this cool morning is shattered briefly with the sound of the southbound local, as they slow down for a lift at Duagh, Alberta.

Numerous miniature trunks extend and curl outward from the flowering stalk of an Elephant's Head (Pedicularis groenlandica) in the James Peak Wilderness, Colorado. The Elephant's Head is quite possibly my favorite member of the Lousewort genus, though I admit that I am not familiar with them all.
Happy Thanksgiving to all in the U.S.! It's been another heckuva year but there is still much for which to be thankful.
I couldn't really think of any adjective other than "delicate" to describe this scene. Overgradation and manipulation would have destroyed it so what you see here is more or less straight out of the camera. The only thing I had to correct was a slightly wonky horizon.
I find that nature's delicate creations are some of the most stunning things to capture with a lens. The image is the inside of an amaryllis that is blooming in our kitchen.
This is a handheld shot taken with a Nikon D80 coupled with a Nikkor 18-200mm vibration reduction lens. The black background is poster board and I used the onboard flash of the camera to highlight the details.

While walking through the Butterfly Garden at the Woodland Park Zoo I noticed this most lovely and delicate creature sipping nectar from fuschia colored petals.
Shot with Sony + macro tubes. my very first macro attempt.
A calm moment caught between storms. Sometimes the lens speaks when you can't.

The story of this photo:
This is my latest macro shot. Over the last few weeks, I have been spending my time doing a lot of stuff that did not have too much to do with taking or editing photos. It did have to do with photography, but just not with the creative part of it. Anyway, yesterday, I got fed up with this stuff and I started messing around with my macro gear. The sun just went down and I found this tiny foilage with those delicate little hairs. I figured that this would look great against the sun. So, I got out my little syringe, applied a few droplets and took a whole bunch of shots with the sun in different spots relative to the foilage.
Initailly, I went with an aperture of f/20 to f/25 to get all of the leaves in focus. But that brought parts of the background too much into focus too. So, I went with f/8 which blurred the background entirely, and I took different shots with different foci. Then I used focus stacking in Photoshop to blend those images together. Et Voilà , subject in focus, background blurred.
And here is the lesson for you: Always know what you can do to an image in post-processing while you are shooting. This may help you solve problems and lets you create images that may be very difficult to create otherwise.

Waited until dark to catch the sunset color at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Utah. The 1.3 mile hike down required my camera CCD cleaning flash light which I happened to have in my camera bag.

On this Earth Day, I cannot find a better picture which shows both the resilience and delicateness of the planet we live in. The two people in the picture shows where we stand on the grand scale. The planet we have now is a gift from our ancestors and I hope we can gift it to our next generations in a better way.
