A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) that had just realized the the camera eye was blinking at him. He whipped his neck and body around to get a better view.

I always enjoy seeing Red Milkweed Beetles. They just look a little clown-like to me! I saw this fellow on July 21, 2024 on the Mohawk River trail in Clifton Park, New York, USA.

I am surprised every time I drive by this old house and it is still standing on its own.

Update: This house was razed and the lot cleared in May of 2021.

This little guy has been sitting on my desktop, bleating away,

7 Sunrises in 7 Days Project - Day 5

Despite my collection of softboxes and umbrellas and light stands and backdrops bordering on ridiculous, when it comes to most portraits, give me some angled sunlight and a giant reflector and that's all I really need. Of course, sometimes the weather gods refuse to cooperate and the sun goes away and everything is awful.

What to do? Continue on defiantly and create your own sunlight with Friend 1 holding a bare flash a few feet away at camera right to illuminate Friend 2's beautiful hair and give the illusion of evening sun, with the giant reflector at camera left to provide a touch of fill.

Is it sophisticated? Nah. Is it perfect? Definitely not, if you think about it too hard you know it's not real sun because the ferns aren't lit up. But does it generally work? I think so. Thumbs up.

I've been wanting to do a photo having to deal with lyrics from a song by Lorde and I knew Royals is a little cliche it fit my concept perfectly. This was so much fun taking and editing, and is now one of my favorite photos I have ever done. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is getting excited for a brand new year!

I'm planning to do a photo having to do with a new start and a new year but we'll see if that happens.

Ofc I know about the lens distortion correction "issue" and all the "obvious mistakes", i was processing this last night (a bit high from my meds - i had an accident on saturday and lost all mobility to my right limb - i have to admit) and did this while laying in bed with my left hand only after it took forever to setup the tripod and the camera, and decided to keep it like this for fun purposes so this is a coposite, an artists depiction if you will - an impression and not a real photograph so consider it accordingly. total expo time for this one was about 820 seconds

Putting aside the controversy that surrounds Grey Squirrels in the UK for a moment, they really are some of the most amazingly agile acrobats - I was just watching this one as he paused/posed briefly midway down a garden fence panel.

Here's another shot from our weekend in SC. I took this at 6:26 am before I got eaten alive by the sand flies AKA noseeums. They were already attacking me, but I thought it won't be that bad and "I can do this". Sunrise supposedly was at 7:01, but we didn't get to see any sun until well after 7:30 am.

As you can see we didn't get much color other than blues this morning. I didn't mind though, because blue is my favorite color after all.

The challenge shooting here was that even though the sand felt pretty hard packed as soon as I stood still I started sinking in (almost like quicksand). This also was true for the tripod. It seemed to be rock solid, but then halfway though the 30 second exposure it sank in a bit. Very annoying!
