Denver & Rio Grande 10-wheeler #168 hauls her vintage 1800s passenger train upgrade toward the nearby Lava Tank on a stretch of track known as "Gravity Hill", just west of Milepost 289. The term "gravity hill" is actually a generic one, referring to a place where the surrounding terrain makes a particular grade that is uphill, look just the opposite. That's definitely the case here. Although it looks as if the 168 is rolling downhill, she's actually working pretty hard on the climb to Lava.

This image was captured during an October 2024 photo shoot on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. On this day, the featured power was the 1883-vintage Baldwin T-12 #168, one of just two survivors of that class. The 168 is one of the oldest active steam locomotives in the US, and sees only occasional service on special trains, typically between Antonito and Osier, CO.

Soooo, month five of my birthday-gift-challenge is almost over and it’s time to show my result to this months theme; “Defying gravity”.

For all of the previous themes of the challenge I waited to the last days to take my photos… but not this month! This time I had somewhat of a vision of what I wanted right from the start and my picture was (almost) entirely ready by the middle of the month. And I must say that I’m very pleased with the result, I think it turned out really good!

A big thanks to my model Sofie and my assistant for the day Julia who had to withstand the cold weather and my many vague instructions. Without them this picture would not have been possible!

And as usual you can find all of my photos for the challenge in my albums and you can find Kajsas picture here:

Kajsa has had quite a struggle this month and I am very proud that she managed to create such a fascinating picture in the end, so give her some extra support and love this month!

I always enjoy seeing Red Milkweed Beetles. They just look a little clown-like to me! I saw this fellow on July 21, 2024 on the Mohawk River trail in Clifton Park, New York, USA.

Description of the photo, from the book :

"A rapport with people has been evident in Mary Ellen's work from the very beginning. She does not feel she has to know people to photograph them. Using her camera as a tool of exploration, she learns about them and their lives. She will even approach strangers, as the photograph of Valli (sic) testifies.

She had just started to photograph when she went to Europe in 1965. It was two years before pictures of flower children with gypsy clothes, beads and rings would become commonplace. Mary Ellen was sitting in a small restaurant in Positano, Southern Italy, when she saw a woman wearing an incredible assortment of necklaces and rings, dressed in a fashion that defied current fashion. It was all fantasy, from the tattoos on her head to the single flower she was holding.

Mary Ellen knew she had to have a picture of that strange aura of innocence mingled with sadness. She approached the woman gently, asked if she might photograph her, and heard her name - Valli. They communicated easily ; Valli invited her to visit.

A couple of days later they met and walked together up into the hills where Valli lived. She introduced Mary Ellen to her little fox and goats and showed her around her small, sad shack.

Throughout the afternoon, Mary Ellen took photographs, and when evening came she knew that on many rolls of black-and-white film, plus a few of color, she had an exciting series of pictures.

She returned to the United States a few weeks later. Before going home to New York, she stopped in Chicago to visit a friend. Anxious to see what she had captured, she put the black-and-white film in a developing tank, and then went out for an hour. When she came back , she had lost most of that afternoon in Italy.

Another friend had come into the apartment, seen the tank, and in passing, opened it. All the film was wrecked. The photograph of Valli at the far left is the best survivor of the color take, To this day, the memory of that loss clouds Mary Ellen's face when she talks about it. "There are no words you can say when something like that happens. You feel so badly for your lost pictures, those that die."

7 Sunrises in 7 Days Project - Day 5

Bogey Hole, Newcastle NSW

Despite my collection of softboxes and umbrellas and light stands and backdrops bordering on ridiculous, when it comes to most portraits, give me some angled sunlight and a giant reflector and that's all I really need. Of course, sometimes the weather gods refuse to cooperate and the sun goes away and everything is awful.

What to do? Continue on defiantly and create your own sunlight with Friend 1 holding a bare flash a few feet away at camera right to illuminate Friend 2's beautiful hair and give the illusion of evening sun, with the giant reflector at camera left to provide a touch of fill.

Is it sophisticated? Nah. Is it perfect? Definitely not, if you think about it too hard you know it's not real sun because the ferns aren't lit up. But does it generally work? I think so. Thumbs up.

Thank you for stopping by! Your comments and favs are highly appreciated :-)

"And we'll never be royals

It don't run in our blood,

That kind of luxe just ain't for us.

We crave a different kind of buzz."

I've been wanting to do a photo having to deal with lyrics from a song by Lorde and I knew Royals is a little cliche it fit my concept perfectly. This was so much fun taking and editing, and is now one of my favorite photos I have ever done. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is getting excited for a brand new year!

I'm planning to do a photo having to do with a new start and a new year but we'll see if that happens.

Ofc I know about the lens distortion correction "issue" and all the "obvious mistakes", i was processing this last night (a bit high from my meds - i had an accident on saturday and lost all mobility to my right limb - i have to admit) and did this while laying in bed with my left hand only after it took forever to setup the tripod and the camera, and decided to keep it like this for fun purposes so this is a coposite, an artists depiction if you will - an impression and not a real photograph so consider it accordingly. total expo time for this one was about 820 seconds

Putting aside the controversy that surrounds Grey Squirrels in the UK for a moment, they really are some of the most amazingly agile acrobats - I was just watching this one as he paused/posed briefly midway down a garden fence panel.

HFF and wishing everyone a great (and chocolatey) Easter weekend! :)
