www.jcvi.org/cms/about/bios/vhayes

Dr. Hayes work focuses on defining the extent of human DNA diversity and how this diversity impacts human health, behavior and adaptations. In 2010, she made headlines by co-leading a study to define the extent of human diversity by generating the genome (complete DNA sequence) of South African Noble Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and a Bushman (hunter-gatherer) from the Kalahari region of Namibia. Published in Nature in 2010, this work was the first genome sequence of an indigenous person. She has continued with research within the indigenous populations in Southern Africa, as well as being a proponent for genomic development within Africa and global health disparities between African and non-African countries. Dr. Hayes is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Fulbright Australian-American Professional Scholarship, the Ruth Stephens Gani Medal for Human Genetics and the New South Wales Premier?s Award for Outstanding Cancer Research.

Who defines what is beautiful?

Magazines constantly trick females into believing that perfection is a possibility. Celebrities role model a life style whereby they instinctively hide their individualisms and become clones of society. The public therefore feels compelled to achieve this definition of ‘beautiful.’ Surely, this means we size up beauty in the same way we would pick a cake at afternoon tea? We automatically judge on aesthetically pleasing form.

As young girls fail in their conquest to replicate a plastic Barbie look, they unfortunately become more aware of their flaws. They forget that beauty is the opposite of perfection - it’s about confidence, charisma and confidence. Inner beauty never needs make up. Females need to be reminded that imperfections are what make each individual human and unique. Flaws are perfection.

the photo of the little copy of the Eiffel Tower and the Alexander III bridge as the background. What is interesting about this picture is that I've placed the metal copy right in front of the actual tower that is located in the distance behind the bridge. This trip to Paris and specifically this moment is very deer to my heart and it has defined my Study Abroad experience. After a long day of travel on the train from Lyon to Paris, then standing in a line and arguing with the hostel receptionist in French, being late for Louvre admission and losing our luggage, my friends and I were wondering around the city angry, desperate, and hungry. And suddenly I've made a turn to the street that lead me to the Seine river and the seller offered this figurine. When I looked at the little tower and the golden bridge through the lens of my camera, I saw the beauty of the city that I simply forgot to notice because I was worried and busy and trying to have everything under control. At this moment, everything has changed. That evening we finished at the Trocadero Square, we ate French crepes while watching the illumination of the tower. Now this metal copy stands on my nightstand and every day it reminds me of that troubled but enjoyable day in France!

His lashes are by far one of his most noticed features.

It took some patience and a while to get this shot, but it was worth the wait.

Train travel in the South was segregated, and signs like this hand-painted sign warning of a "Colored Section" were common. Black travelers had to move to the segregated car when trains passed from a northern state to a southern state.

Many jobs available to black workers were in service positions and paid little, even in northern areas like Westchester, New York, home of this employment agency.

Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation, 1876-1968, part of the the History Galleries, explores the years following the end of Reconstruction to show how the nation struggled to define the status of African Americans.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, was established in December 2003 and opened its permanent home in September 2016. The 350,000-square-foot, 10-story (five above and five below ground) was built to the postmodern design of Phil Freelon's Freelon Group, Sir David Adjaye's Adjaye Associates and Davis Brody Bond. The above ground floors feature an inverted step pyramid surrounded by a bronze architectural scrim, which reflects a crown used in Yoruba culture. With more than 40,000 objects in its collection, although only about 3,500 items are on display, the NMAAHC is the world's largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture.

The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

What's "Defined 1.0."?

Dictionary definition of addicted

Fictional narrative portraiture speaks to people in a way fashion or documentary photography can’t. It introduces characters and creates stories that don’t exist, allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks themselves. By including minimal context and providing no prompt with the images, they stand completely alone, and when viewed individually, beg for a story to be told.

In my series, I explore the field of cinematic portraiture and fabricate moments that might show a small piece of a larger untold narrative. I invite you fill in the blanks with your own version of the story.

Kathakali, a highly stylized classical Indian dance-drama, originated in Kerala, during the 17th century, the popular belief is that kathakali is emerged from 'Krishnanattam'. Kathakali is noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion.

Kathakali also shares a lot of similarities with Krishnanattam, Koodiyattam (a classical Sanskrit drama existing in Kerala) and Ashtapadiyattam (an adaptation of 12th-century musical called Gitagovindam). It also incorporates several other elements from traditional and ritualistic art forms like Mudiyettu, Thiyyattu, Theyyam and Padayani besides a minor share of folk arts like Porattunatakam. All along, the martial art of Kalarippayattu has influenced the body language of Kathakali. The use of Malayalam, the local language (albeit as a mix of Sanskrit and Malayalam, called 'Manipravaalam'), has also helped the literature of Kathakali sound more transparent for the average audience.

The Kathakali percussion instruments include metallophones and membranophones. Metallophones are Chengila (gong made of bell metal, which can be struck with a wooden stick) and Ilathalam or Ellatalam (a pair of cymbals). Membranophones are Chenda, Maddalam, Edakka or Idakka.

Week 4 of the 52 weeks project! This week's theme is VINTAGE.

I have an obsession with old photographs. I look at them for hours and make up stories about the people in each photo & imagine what their lives were like. I just finished an amazing book, American Photobooth, and now I'm dreaming about owning a vintage photo booth someday.
