Webster's defines "Pioneer Spirit" as...a willingness to endure hardship in order to explore new places or try out new things. I'm grateful to all those who went before to settle the country of my home, but I do admit, the mindset to choose a place of such barrenness to "make a go of it", is astounding. This home for example hasn't a single a neighbor within site. There is not a tree or bush to be had, and knowing the weather extremes of the eastern plains, the ability to plan ahead would certainly be one of your top priorities.

Beth and I just got home from our Spring Bird and Bloom Tour. We don’t do this every year - it’s been several since we’ve done it - and this year we concentrated on the Carrizo Plain, a remote area in central California. The San Andreas Fault defines the eastern margin of the plain, pushing up the Temblor Mountains like plump lips fifty miles long, tinged with color. Every hundred years or so the fault parts its lips to say a deep rumbling word that shakes all who hear it.
The orange is California Poppy, the yellow is ranunculus and coreopsis, the purple is a species of borage. On close inspection another ten or so wildflower species can be found.
Happy to share locations with any who want to make the journey. It is not a trivial trip - no services at all for miles and miles, biting cold wind and dust that gets into every crevice, dirt roads that turn to quagmire, rocky roads (like this grade) that can break a car, only camping if you want to overnight and a fair number of badly behaved tourists actually stomping out into the flowers, killing those flowers’ only chance to propagate. Also, I cannot say how this year’s bloom will progress - I suspect it might peak in a week or so, but it could also just end early. The experts at the Theodore Payne Foundation feel conditions are not perfect for the full ‘super bloom,’ but they did suggest it would be a ‘special bloom’ this Spring. Special, indeed.

Today's shot is a tribute to two of my very good flickr friends, Jordy and Cyndi. A while back, I saw this shot that Cyndi had taken of her daughter (coincidentally also named Ali), and I knew I wanted to try to do a version of it at some point. Then today I was perusing Jordy's stream and discovered this shot and knew that today would be the day!
The thing I love about both Jordy and Cyndi is that they march to the beat of their own drum. They don't simply follow the crowd, but instead forge ahead and make their own path. I love that. There have been many times in my life that I've admittedly been a sheep and simply gone with the flow because it was easier. And because I have always struggled with an insatiable need to be liked. But I like to think that as I've gotten older, I've developed a strong enough backbone to forge ahead as me. Just me. I'm not perfect. Far from it. But I like to think that all of my flaws are really what make me uniquely beautiful. In a way nobody else can be. (Of course, that won't keep me from obsessing over them.)
A few things to note about this shot... I am right-handed. That's why my right hand looks so sloppy. Drawing with my left hand is not easy!! Andy added two items to my right hand, so I'll tag those. Also, these "washable" markers are not really that washable. I mean, I scrubbed the hell out of my hands multiple times and I've still got writing all over them. It's faded slightly, but it's still there. Thank god I never used these markers on my face (which is the reason I originally bought them).
Also!!!! H IS FOR HANDS!!! Finally! I've been stuck in my alpha series. This will get me un-stuck. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Whether it’s close to home or in a different state or a different country. Trees are in their own class of beauty. If they’re very tall or not it really doesn’t matter. They help define Nature. Trees can help create great landscapes. Trees can beautify sunrises or sunsets. “Trees Define Beauty” so much so that man needs to plant two trees to replace every tree taken down. Planting trees helps to keep the soil healthy and keep the air healthy to breathe. Gratitude and Kindness can grow on trees too so plant a soon. Where we live now we plant a tree for every year we live here.

We went to the RA on Friday with architect friends to see the exhibition Sensing Spaces. Great exhibition, and fun - we hope to take Elsie.
Subtle astral colors...are hidden in everything around you. Could you but see, you would be amazed at their beauty.

Erotomania can be defined as a psychological disorder in which the afflicted relentlessly pursues the notion that the object of his/her affection reciprocates his/her romantic feelings and/or fantasies. This obsession with the desired individual continues long after that individual has asserted that he/she is not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with the afflicted. Consequently, erotomaniacs tend to stalk their victims. Characteristic of the erotomaniac (generally across the board) are the following: irrationality, a tendancy toward impulsive actions, obsessiveness, paranoia, psychotic tendancies. The erotomaniac tends to begin with simple, subtle expressions of affection to reach the object of his/her desire which later spirals out of control and can lead to expressions of anger, rage, frusteration and violence when such gestures go ignored and the victims continues to assert lack of interest. Strangely the erotomaniac fails altogether to see the victim's lack of interest.

Bonnierhuset (also the Bonnier scraper ) is a 61 meter high tower building in central Stockholm. Bonnier house is the first concrete skyscraper that was built after the war.
Bonnierhuset defines modern architecture in Stockholm, thus, making it a prominent landmark in the city. This magnificent structure houses various offices and event venues within it.
Bonnierhuset was owned by Bonnier Fastigheter. The complex was completed in 1949 and designed by Ivar Tengbom and his son Anders Tengbom after an architectural competition which was decided in 1937 but World War II delayed the start of construction.

Our Humanity
This moment illustrates how compassion, concern, tenderness, respect, and love for our fellow humans is so powerful and so important. Look at the hands and the tears welling up in the woman's eyes. It is impossible to miss that the skin color is not the same for these two people. I was moved and blessed to see this moment -- a moment that defines our humanity, one where all humans are created equally, regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, or nationality.

Transitions are something I'm always looking for in landscape photography. They help tell the story, add a dynamic energy and create depth in a 2-dimensional image. It's that defining moment where conditions begin to change and transform a scene that enables you to see, or feel, the essential nature and character of a location. I find them rare to come by, or at least notice sometimes, but these are the moments that I'm after.
On the second morning photographing the "Musquash" in Grand Lake Stream, ME. I was able to witness and capture one of these "transitional periods." After a pre-dawn of abundant cloud cover, morning mist, and calm waters, all of which were beautiful in their own right, a gentle breeze came into play as the first light of the sun kissed the western shoreline. The fog began to dissipate. The surface of the water became entwined with ripples, partially concealing the reflection of trees. The sky opened up, and clouds started to take shape as light penetrated through creating separation and structure. Everything became much clearer as if I had switched from standard to high definition.
After capturing this single frame, I quickly rearranged the camera to a vertical orientation and leveled the tripod to attempt a multi-frame panorama. It was already too late. The moment had passed. The turbulent water had removed all reflection, and light filled in the shadows, creating a much flatter scene. It had lost its energy and identity in a way, at least until the next morning.
