I found this cute little sparrow chick with a funny hairdo in one of the Moscow parks ... he fell out of the nest.
What to do? How can I help this baby?
The fact is that in many birds (primarily small passerines), the chicks leave the nest as half-fledged fledglings. During this period of life, they still do not know how to fly, but they are already actively mastering the surrounding space. The parents did not abandon this chick, but simply flew away for food. Of course, as long as you stand next to the chick, they will not make themselves felt. Savvy birds can check after you leave that it was you considered there, they will find and kill the chick. Hence the conclusion: do not "save" everything that catches your eye. If the chick is dry, warm, active, well-feathered, then it does not need help.
And if the situation raises concerns? What to do first:
1. Quickly and carefully inspect the place where you found the chick, remember what it looks like. In some cases, this will help determine the type of bird.
2. Pick up the chick (with gloves) and bring it home as soon as possible.
3. On the way, inspect the chick for damage. If the bird has clearly visible fractures of the legs, wings, contusion (how to define it a little below), then you cannot do without a veterinarian. It is highly advisable to seek help from a veterinarian who specializes in the treatment of birds (unfortunately, such specialists are extremely rare). If there are no obvious signs of a fracture, and the general condition of the chick is satisfactory, just provide good conditions - nature will do its job and he will recover.
4. Provide the chick with food as soon as possible, it is even more important than equipping him with a house.
What did I do in this case? The kid is absolutely healthy and active, but I saw how a passerby man almost stepped on this chick and I brought a man from the administration of this park to this place, he promised to do everything necessary. I do not know anything about the fate of the bird, I have never visited this park again.

Digging back into my files, I rediscovered this image from last summer. By late summer, the Wild Teasel wild flowers had turned into seed pods and were everywhere around this park in the east end of Windsor, Ontario. The golden light of the setting sun helped to define the shape of these interesting wild flowers.

A fern (Polypodiopsida or Polypodiophyta) is a member of a group of vascular plants (plants with xylem and phloem) that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. They differ from mosses by being vascular, i.e., having specialized tissues that conduct water and nutrients and in having life cycles in which the sporophyte is the dominant phase. The fledgling robin jumped from its nest for the first time and landed on our deck railing as seen in my recent post "Restrictions Lifted". The next stop was our window ledge where Maggie greeted him. The baby bird's Dad was below squawking at him to get down. I'm certain he was giving him his first life lesson - "stay away from cats!"

These dried Annabelle Hydrangea blooms have been in a vase on my hutch since last summer. One day, from where I was standing, they were lit so perfectly by the late afternoon light streaming in, that the detail in each tiny petal of each small flower was beautifully displayed and defined. Of course, out came the camera!

The image you see is actually three separate images woven together using Photoshop cs5. Ones of a beautiful beach near my old home, the other my new home, the city (the other is the star trail). The image portrays two different worlds and two different homes to me.

I am working on setting up my photography goals for the year. Starting next week I have decided to have three defined days: mmmmm Monday when I will work on shooting food, Wandering Wednesday - I will take photos anywhere but on my block and Flash Friday when I will work on learning flash. I also have intentions to do more portraiture work this year but haven't included it as part of my project. Another defining feature of Central Park's sustainability is a cantilevered heliostat, pictured here. Suspended from the 28th floor of One Central Park's east tower, it serves not only as a predominant design element to the building but as a way of reflecting light to the gardens and atrium below. It operates through a series of motorised mirrors that are positioned 100 metres below the cantilever on the rooftop of the west tower.
Daylight is automatically tracked from these mirrors and the light is reflected up to the cantilever. 220 fixed reflecting panels are positioned across the underbelly of the cantilever and are able to then bounce light throughout the retail atrium, pedestrian corridor, pool terrace and communal areas. On the upper side of the cantilever a sky garden has been erected. At night the cantilever is transformed into an LED light display.
