So many photos, so many too choose from. So I thought I'd choose this shot from the urban business district of La Defense - a Parisian Manhattan full of high rise buildings mixed with contemporary sculpture.
Love the timing of this smartly dressed businessman walking past.

The masked lapwing (Vanellus miles) is a large, common and conspicuous bird native to Australia, particularly the northern and eastern parts of the continent, New Zealand and New Guinea. It spends most of its time on the ground searching for food such as insects and worms, and has several distinctive calls. It is common in Australian fields and open land, and is known for its defensive swooping behaviour during the nesting season.
Despite the species being also known as the masked plover and often called the spur-winged plover or just plover in its native range, lapwings are classified to their own subfamily, Vanellinae, and not to the closely related plover subfamily, Charadriinae. There are two subspecies; the nominate subspecies and the southern novaehollandiae, which has distinctive black markings on the shoulder and side of the chest, and is sometimes recognized as a separate species, the black-shouldered lapwing (Vanellus novaehollandiae).

U.S.-built, issued on a very large scale (known as Sherman III and Sherman V in Canadian service) The M4A4 became the standard medium tank in the Canadian Army during WWII, replacing the Ram tank, but these remained in Europe after the war ended while the diesel powered M4A2 Shermans were retained in Canada (some remained in Army Reserve service and were used for training during the post war years, alongside M4A2E8 Shermans, until 1970).

When I first saw this one swing around from the tree line, I thought it was going to do a fly over to check me out.
But No.
It was gaining speed to flush out some Ravens that had the poor judgement to land on the roost tree of this bird and its mate.
Several passes later, and the area was clear.

A trip to the coast to experiment some more with the ND filters, and find something rocky to boot. Sunshine today, a lovely day - but rather more restrictive on the long exposures than I'd have liked. Early morning and cloud would have been better!

The Haldor Defensive Line (Aksjön: Hallþórr vegg) was an extensive system of concrete fortifications, obstacles and weapon installations that Aksjö, Germanica and later the Aksjö Remnant and the Reich constructed on the Northern side of its borders with Neustrasia and the Kentese Kingdom during the late 1940s as a defence against an anticipated invasion. The line was a response to Aksjö experience in the Avratic War and was constructed during the Dark Days in the aftermath of the Endkrieg.
The Aksjö defence forces established the fortification to give their army time to mobilize in the event of attack. The success of static, defensive combat in The Great War was a key influence on Aksjö thinking. Their military experts extolled the Haldor Line as a work of genius, believing it would prevent any invasion from the royalist nations.
Aksjö high command ordered the construction of the fortifications in 1944 a.s. Almost five million slave workers were drafted to build it of which most died during the first year in service as a result of malnutrition. The Reich had no shortage of workers and made sure to complement the labor force with sufficient numbers. The fortifications included colossal guns, anti-air batteries, mortars, artillery, anti-air missiles and tens of thousands of Aksjö and Reich elite troops were stationed in its defences.

TURTON TOWER EVOLVED FROM BEING A SIMPLE STONE PELE TOWER, WHICH WAS BUILT AROUND 1420 AS A DEFENSIVE FORTRESS, TO AN IMPRESSIVE AND COMFORTABLE RESIDENCE BY THE TUDOR AND EARLY STUART PERIOD. IS THE STONE PELE TOWER WHICH MEASURES 45 FEET IN LENGTH FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND IS 28 FEET WIDE. THE TOWER IS ABOUT 35 FEET IN HEIGHT WITH WALLS FOUR FEET THICK. IN THE NORTH-WEST CORNER OF THE TOWER THE SHAFT OF A GARDEROBE PROJECTS FROM THE MAIN STRUCTURE. THE TOWER HAD THREE LOW STOREYS AS EVIDENCED BY THE BLOCKED WINDOW OPENINGS. THE WALLS HAVE ROUGH WITH LARGE CORNER QUOINS. THE SIMPLE STONE STRUCTURE WAS ADDED TO WITH TIMBER EXTENSIONS BY THE ORRELL FAMILY TRANSFORMING IT TO A LAVISH HOUSE. IN DOING SO, HOWEVER IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THEY OVERSPENT AND WERE FORCED TO SELL. THE TOWER WAS PURCHASED BY HUMPHREY CHETHAM IN 1628. THE ORRELL’S CONTINUED TO LIVE ON AT THE TOWER RENTING THE TOWER FROM HIM. DURING THE CIVIL (1642-1650), THE ORRELL’S WERE CAVALIERS WHERE THE CHETHAMS SUPPORTED THE ROUNDHEAD AND THIS MUST HAVE MADE FOR INTERESTING TIMES AT THE TOWER WHEN CHETHAM GARRISONED HIS TROOPS WITHIN THE TURTON ESTATE!
THE GREENE AND FRERE FAMILIES WERE THE OWNERS IN THE LATE 18TH AND EARLY 19TH CENTURIES AND THEY CONTINUED THIS TRADITION OF KEEPING HOUSES ELSEWHERE ALTHOUGH THE HOUSE WAS OCCUPIED FOR SOME TIME BY MEMBERS OF THE HORROCKS FAMILY WHO ARE STILL NUMEROUS IN THIS AREA.
THE ARRIVAL OF THE KAY FAMILY IN 1835 SAW TURTON TOWER TRANSFORMED INTO A ROMANTIC GOTHIC BUILDING. THEY CHANGED THE SOUTH FRONT, BUILT A ‘MOCK TUDOR’ EXTENSION AND REBUILT THE SUMMER HOUSE WHICH IS NOW ON PRIVATE GROUND BUT CAN BE VIEWED FROM THE TOWER. THEY SUPPORTED THE BUILDING OF THE RAILWAY NEARBY AND CREATED A TENNIS COURT IN THE GROUNDS.
THE KAYS DEPARTED IN THE 1890S AND, AFTER OCCUPATION BY SEVERAL MORE TENANTS, THE PROPERTY WAS PURCHASED BY SIR LEES KNOWLES AND USED AS A HUNTING LODGE AND WEEKEND RETREAT. ON HIS DEATH IN 1929 LADY NINA KNOWLES, HIS WIDOW, GAVE THE TOWER AND GROUNDS TO TURTON URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL TO USE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC. SINCE THEN THE TOWER HAS BEEN USED AS COUNCIL OFFICES AND SINCE 1974 AS A MUSEUM AND HISTORIC HOUSE. TURTON TOWER IS NOW OWNED BY BLACKBURN WITH DARWEN COUNCIL.
Just one of several defensive stone walls that were built during the time when Istanbul was known as Constantinople, hence the name Walls of Constantinople. They were originally built to defend the city from the oncoming invasions by various invaders, but were not able to hold back the ultimate invasion of the Ottoman forces. The walls were well maintained during most of the reign of the Ottomans, but eventually were dismantled section by section over the years in the 19th century. Various restorations are now in place.

Vischering Castle (German: Burg Vischering) in Lüdinghausen, North Rhine-Westphalia is the most typical moated castle in the Münster (region) of Germany. This region has one of the highest German concentrations of castles, palaces and fortifications, Lüdinghausen having three by itself. The castle consists of outer defensive courtyard, defensive gateways, moat, drawbridge, main building and chapel. The sandstone walls, the red tile roofs as well as their reflection in the moat provide many harmonious views from the wooded surroundings.
Vischering Castle was built by Bischop Gerhard von der Mark to counter the second castle built by the Von Lüdinghausen family. It became the seat of the Droste zu Vischering Family. Droste is the local title for the hereditary noble administrators serving the Bishops of Münster. The moat is constantly replenished by a side-arm of the River Stever. The outer defensive courtyard contains the business and farm buildings. The main building is a horseshoe-shaped three-story structure with heavy outer wall. Its inner courtyard is closed off by the chapel and a lower defense wall. A castle keep is missing, having been removed during Renaissance renovations. Fire destroyed the castle in 1521. Rebuilding took place on the existing foundation. Windows and the addition of a large bay made the castle more liveable but diminished its defensive character. The whole site however retains the character of a feudal age moated castle. Damage from air attack during World War II was minor.
Vischering Castle houses the Münsterlandmuseum, an exhibit on knighthood for children, as well as a cafe-restaurant. It serves as a cultural center for Kreis Coesfeld. Visiting hours are provided in the first link below. Viewing the outside is possible at all times.

All was quiet and peaceful in the park. Suddenly there was a loud splashing and thrashing about, geese began honking then flew from the slough.

Alicante is a Spanish coastal city located on the Costa Blanca in the Valencian Community. The city is an important port for the export of central Spain and the region with its beautiful sandy beaches attracts many tourists. In Alicante we can find art, culture, seafood and beautiful beaches. Alicante has a beautiful old town with a beautiful boulevard along the coast Explanada de España and lively terraces. The most beautiful sight is the castle of Santa Barbara on Monte Benacantil a hill of 166 meters high. The history of Alicante dates back to 230 BC, when the city was founded under the name Akra Leuk. After that, the city became part of the Roman Empire and in 711 the Moors occupied the city, who also gave the city its current name 'Alicante'. The Moors also laid the foundation for the fortress on top of the Benacantil hill, but after the conquest by the Spaniards this grew into the castle Castillo de Santa Bárbara.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara is located on the 166 meter high mountain Benacantil. Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman artifacts have been found on the slopes of this mountain, but the castle's origins date back to the 9th century at the time of the Muslim rulers, from 711 to 1296. After that time, the castle was taken over by Castilian troops led of Alfonso of Castile. The castle is named after Saint Barbara, on whose feast day the castle was recaptured from the Arabs. From the 18th century, the castle's military role diminished and it was sometimes used as a prison. From 1939, with the end of the Spanish Civil War, it was used as a Francoist concentration camp for Republican prisoners until the end of that year. Castillo de Santa Bárbara remained abandoned until 1963, when it was opened to the public. Plaza de Toros can be seen from the Santa Barbara Castle. The Alicante Bullring is one of the oldest active bullrings in the province of Valencia. Inside you will find the Bullfighting Museum of Alicante. Built in 1847, it had to be renovated in 1884 due to its deterioration. The grandeur of the square and its large capacity give an idea of the importance of bullfighting in Alicante in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Overview of the settlement from the mound that contains the defensive towers
Unesco World Heritage site: During the late 2nd century B.C. (Bronze Age), a structure known as nuraghi (for which no parallel exists anywhere else in the world) developed on the island of Sardinia. Its purpose is still debated, but it is believed to be defensive. The complex consists of circular defensive towers in the form of truncated cones built of dressed stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. The complex at Barumini, which was extended and reinforced in the first half of the 1st millennium under Carthaginian pressure, is the finest and most complete example of this remarkable form of prehistoric architecture. A village, intended to accommodate the surrounding population, was built around the Nuraghe in the Late Bronze Age.

This is a defensive tower, most likely built as a component part of the Rye town defences between 1329 and the end of the 14th century. Peter of Savoy, then Constable of the Cinque Ports, was authorised to fortify Rye in 1249 but Historic England are uncertain whether this planned structure was ever built.
The tower was damaged during an air raid in 1942 and required repair in the 1950s. It was the subject of major repairs and restoration in 1996-7 with further alterations and repairs in 2005-7.
Ypres Tower (which gains its name from being granted to John de Ypres in 1431) is built of iron-stained sandstone coursed rubble masonry with evidence that this was once rendered or covered in a wash. Its ashlar dressings include ironstone and Caen stone. The internal walls were limewashed with some evidence of render at the ground floor.
The tower is oriented on a NW-SE alignment. The tower is square in plan, with projecting ¾ round towers at each of its four corners, and sits forward (to the SE) of the line of the former town wall. Access is through a townside (NW) ground floor doorway (seen above) which is protected by a portcullis. In the 19th century a further external doorway was created in the centre of the basement’s west wall.
The tower is of three storeys - a basement, ground floor and first floor - but the fall of the land from NW to SE is such that the tower’s ground floor is at the first floor level of the SE elevation. Access between the floors was via a spiral staircase in the NE tower but the basement is now reached by an inserted staircase of 1959. It has served as a fort, private dwelling, prison, court hall and now finally as a museum. It is a Grade I listed structure.
Seen from the west. Beyond, a section of the River Rother is visible. It reaches the sea some 3.5 km from the tower.
