Had one last night out in Dallas this past weekend. Delicious sushi, great friends, really fun memories forever.
We're wandering through the biannual artist studios open house at the Continental Gin Building in Deep Ellum tonight. It runs through Saturday night, so go check it out!
Located near the DART Deep Ellum Rail Station - just east of downtown Dallas, Texas - The Traveling Man is a $1.4 million sculptural series designed by Brad Oldham, Brandon Oldenburg, and Reel FX Creative Studios. The artistic concept plants one foot in the rich history of Deep Ellum and the other foot in the neighborhood’s bright future. Born of the railroads in the late 1800s, Deep Ellum took root as a diverse, multi-cultural community with a thriving blues and jazz music scene amongst meat markets, restaurants, bars, theaters, and off-the-beaten-path businesses.
The Union Bankers Building was once the home of The Knights of Pythias Temple, but now sits abandoned with no future plans to be restored. - More information about this old building - jamesjohnston.info/the-abandoned-union-bankers-building/
Today I decided to revisit some of my images from the old Union banker Building. Using Topaz B&W tool,I took an image that looked good in color and converted it to black and white for a more dramatic look. I like it much better than the other processing jobs I did on it. I am finished with color, but I still need not completely satisfied with the look and will continue to work on this image. More info about the Union Banker Building!
Day 4 of the 5 Day Black and White Photo Challenge: Pinstriping at the Invasion Car Show 2013
For the last three years my wife and I have been to the Invasion Car Show in Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas and I hope to go every year. I have over a 1000 unedited images that I need to process, but I just can’t get to them.
I always keep my eyes open for something different at the shows. The 2013 show was a special one for me. As always, I have a lot fun shooting the cars, pin-up girls, and musicians, and the locals. As a bonus I came across a pinstriper working his trade on the cars.
So I took a couple of shots of him working. Out of all of the shots and vehicles he worked on this old VW Bug and the way the painter is concentrating on his work is my favorite shot.
About the Image
I took close to 30 pictures of the pinstriper at work. Most of the images were deleted on site. But after about 20 minutes hanging out and watching him work, I finally got some great looking images.
I shot from the shadows while the pinstriper worked hard in the sun. I used my Sony Nex-3N and a Sony SELP1650 16-50mm Power . I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom and post processed with Topaz Clarity to bring in more texture, detail, and play with the lighting. I then converted the color results to black and white using Topaz B&W.

There is so much history to this place I couldn't possibly explain it all. Here is a brief history: www.sonsofhermann.com/sohh_hall_history.htm
It turned 100 last year. It is the only original wooden building left in Dallas. When you walk in you literally go way back in time. It does not feel like 2012 at all! Downstairs its got a really cool bar area, and upstairs is a ballroom where you can dance, and it is also used as a concert venue. I had a blast going there, and its a must-visit place in Dallas.
