Tonight there is going to be a Blue Moon. We were planning to go out for a romantic walk in the moonlight, but a cloudy and rainy sky is forcing us at home. I am reposting this to try and alleviate Kia’s disappointment, considering that the next Blue Moon isn't due till July 2015. It really happens "Once in a Blue Moon"!

On New Year's Eve we have seen the second full moon of the month (which is called a Blue Moon), and also the 13th full moon of the year. But that’s not the only special thing about the last day of 2009. There was also a partial lunar eclipse. We thought we might commemorate this rare event by making this collage.

5:50 PM – Shining, higher and higher in the sky.
6:55 PM – Hit by the penumbra, the curved shadow of the Earth.
7:23 PM – At the climax of the partial eclipse.

Dedicated to Notre-Dame des Pins (“Our Lady of the Pine Trees”), the church of Espondeilhan, a small village near the city of Béziers in the département of Hérault (region of Occitania, southern France), has been standing just outside the village, near the cemetery, since before Year 1000.
According to tradition, its dedication comes from the name of a Roman “villa” (a large agricultural and cattle-raising domain, not unlike a modern-day hacienda) which was named ad pinis, probably because there were many pine trees around. This story is quite likely, much more than the undocumented one according to which this church was one of the forty founded by Emperor Charlemagne... What is for sure is that it is already mentioned in Ansfred II’s Handbook from around 875, and also that a paleo-Christian, Wisigothic sarcophagus from the 4th or 5th century was found nearby —there may have been some kind of archaic oratory very early on in this locale.
Listed as a Historic Landmark on Prosper Mérimée’s very first list of 1840, it was, quite astoundingly and for reasons I haven’t been able to trace, “unlisted” in 1885 (never have I encountered such a mishap before!) and then listed again in 1907. Officially built from 1120 in two distinct campaigns, it was also fortified during the Hundred Years War. In 1852, the bell tower that threatened to collapse was razed (that’s how they “restored” at that time...) and replaced by a short pinnacle, which was in turn destroyed in 1971 within the framework of a works campaign that presumably aimed at rebuilding the old bell tower but was never completed. The result of all that is that the church has had no bell tower of any sort for decades, one solitary bell being stored in a corner of the nave, hoping for better days...

It's always a good day out watching the coaches arrive at Wembley, especially when the less regular teams from outside the London area play.
If you haven't been since Covid then you'll be in for a shock! The new Pink and Green dedicated coach parks are almost entirely undercover which makes photography a challenge. Nevertheless, decent shots can still be obtained with good planning.
Here's a reminder of some of the visitors to Wembley Stadium seen in 2022.

Despite the 0 Degree temperatures and on/off snow throughout the day plenty of enthusiasts turned out for the March 2018 Diesel Gala on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway. Most trains were full and I think even the staff were surprised at the level of visitors!

Sir Sandford Fleming established a summer retreat on the property fronting the Northwest Arm, part of Halifax Harbour, during the 1880s after finishing construction of the Intercolonial Railway. He called it the "Dingle".
In 1908, Fleming donated the property to the citizens of Halifax for use as a park and proposed the construction of a tower within the "Dingle" to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of representative government in Nova Scotia; the province having been the first colony in the British Empire outside the United Kingdom to have such a form of government. - Wikipedia
